Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

If JimmyG makes 1 or 2 more throws in the Super Bowl

or if the new hot meme head coach Saleh's defense didn't **** the bed.

up 20-10 with 6 minutes to go 3rd & 15 they allowed a 45 yard pass and then on 3rd & 10 seconds later committed PI.

Cool. Can it be structured in a way that allows the Pats to get out early in case he’s what SF thinks he is? How much guaranteed will JG want?
The guarantee is the big issue. At the end of the day, the total cap charge a team takes for a player is the amount of cash they pay him (with very limited exceptions); the cap rules just manipulate the timing of when the cash affects the salary cap. As a general rule, the more guaranteed money, the higher the dead money hit and the tougher it is for a team to get out of the contract early *unless* you intentionally take that cap charge early. And the latter is exactly what SF did. Check out his cap history here - Jimmy Garoppolo Contract Details, Salary Cap Charges, Bonus Money, and Contract History | Over The Cap Instead of giving him a signing bonus, they gave him a huge roster bonus in 2018 so they took the large cap hit then instead of spreading it over the length of the contract - and are now free to cut / trade him with little dead cap charges.

In general terms, you can only do 2 out of 3:
- large guaranteed money
- low 1st year cap hit, larger hits in later years
- allow team flexibility to get out of deal early with little repercussions

Jimmy won't take a pay cut, that is silly. You only take a pay cut if you are over paid. If Jimmy is cut he will be able to get a similar deal with a team that wants him, so why play for peanuts? He will play hardball with that crap and if they want to get rid of him it will be on his terms. He will either play for SF at full pay this year, or my guess is play for the Patriots on a longer term reworked deal. That is of course contingent upon the Patriots actually wanting him, and him wanting to play for the Patriots, which I am assuming is correct but I have no inner knowledge.

At the very best he is a "bridge quarterback", no way they gave up that much to move up if they thought Jimmy G was a starter. And yes 20+ million in cap space for a bridge quarterback (at best) isn't going to happen. There are much cheaper options out there for bridge quarterbacks than Jimmy G.
I don’t really care what the 49ers do or don’t think about Garrapolo, I’ll go with Belichick’s view on him. If the Patriots believe that Garrapolo is a QB who can lead them to Lombardi’s then they should make the deal for him, and they should be aggressive about it. The same goes for Mariota or one of the draft prospects. They have one glaring need and it makes no sense to be this aggressive in free agency and then back off when it comes to getting their QB.

Bravo sir

Why isn't right to have Jimmy for a year (if the draftee is ready to start 2022) or for 2 or 3 years if the draftee isn't ready?

You truly favor a draftee, Cam and Stidham? This makes no sense to me, unless you have faith in Cam as the 1-3 year bridge quarterback.
Do I favour drafting a QB over trading for Jimmy G? Absolutely. Why? Because I’ve seen enough (when he’s actually on the field) to know he isn’t a franchise guy. A serviceable mid-lower tier starter, sure (albeit with a bit of a turnover problem) but he’s not the long term answer. We already have one of those. So why not start throwing darts at the board trying to find that answer?

I agree in principle, but there's a difference between being aggressive and being reckless. Belichick and Lynch have a good relationship. It's what led to the trade of JG to the 49ers in the first place. If BB really wants Jimmy, he'll work something out with Lynch, and if Lynch really wants to trade him, he'll get the best deal he can. If another team is offering a first, Lynch won't just do it immediately, he'll see if Belichick wants to top it. So it doesn't make much sense for Belichick to just throw whatever he needs to throw at the 49ers to get them to trade Jimmy NOW. These things will be discussed and will happen when they make sense. Be aggressive, but don't be stupid. There's a very good chance you can get Jimmy (if he's actually available for trade) without giving up #15, for example.

I don’t think Lynch is worried about the 26 million as free agency is close to over in terms of the top players, and having a veteran QB while your future QB is a rookie is generally a good thing. He also has more than one team interested in dealing for Garrapolo, so Lynch has the upper hand right now. And while I don’t think Garrapolo is worth this years #15 pick I would give up their 2022 first rounder for him, as he already knows their offense inside out, and I see that pick as the equivalent of a 2nd rounder. It’s a little pricey but the Patriots are a QB away from serious contention and Garrapolo addresses that need, unless you would rather watch Cam Newton every week?
Jimmy can veto any trade. That potentially takes away leverage away from Lynch.

lol imagine trading up into the top 3 for a QB

and Darnold's about to get replaced.

Don’t tell that to @Ring 6, who is ready to give up three 1st for #4. Tua obviously didn’t go top 3 but in two years ago he will be added to the list of top 10 QB busts, in my opinion.

this is either posturing or Bill has alot more faith in Cam newton than I do.
Yeah its tough to tell right now. I dont think much has changed cap wise or in regards to Newton since the last report that we reached out to sf about a trade, so a little fishy.

this is either posturing

or it's not posturing because Pats got word Garoppolo has no interest in re-doing his deal if traded and he holds the power because he has a no trade clause. Has anyone thought that maybe Garoppolo has no interest in going back to the ownership that demanded he be traded?

So you think he'd rather stay with the coach/ownership that just gave up a fortune to replace him?

Of course he'd be thrilled to come back to the team BB just constructed. He'd also be thrilled to get some guaranteed money stretching out 3-4 years to know that he'd be the starter for the length of his contract.

Maybe the Pats have said, "Not worth a big cap hit" or maybe they're telling Shanahan "nope, not playing."
Or maybe BB really believes that Cam will be a different guy this year, ready to rock and roll.

What an amazingly interesting off-season. I've enjoyed the last couple of weeks more than any football spring ever.

I don’t know, it sounds to me like the Pats just called the Niners on their bluff. That’s if Schultz is to be believed here.
100 percent we aren’t super interested in him kills interest it’s like pretending you’re not interested in something and the sales person starts throwing cheap prices at you it’s how I left with a fricking Equinox 10 years ago when I wanted a CRV. Guy was a total tool but 6 months of no payments and 5 grand off the sticker price damn I still hate that guy. Really wanted the CRV.
