Trent Brown for LT Bandwagon

There's a fifth of us here on this train, and why not? Trent Brown won a ring with the Pats as the starting Left Tackle. He was an elite left tackle. By all grades for 6 years the guy was a better pass blocker than run blocker. He's an ELITE pass blocker. He's a gentle giant. He is NOT a mean run blocking mauler (should be Onwenu at RT).

Now here's details on his super friendly contract. Build the line around Brown at LT and Onwenu at RT, let Wynn walk since he keeps missing 70% of his NFL games. It's way worse to keep changing guys around when Wynn is hurt....

Trent Brown has played 16 games the last 2 years and is 28 years old. Isaiah Wynn has played 18 games the last 2 years and he 26 years old.

I’m sure there is a fifth of something on this train you claim to be on. Im sure it’s not a fifth of the fans who agree with you.

Wynn is no stranger to playing LG.

Brown LT
Wynn LG
Andrews C
Mason RG

Onwenu RT

This is where I am too...The only disadvantage to this formation is that we would have the largest OTs but the smallest C/Gs in the league.

Excellent, so Trent only plays 50% of his games at RT and played 16 of 16 games at LT. Thanks for making my point for me. Trent Brown shouldn't be playing RT, and for the same reason Wynn has missed 70% of his games at LT. Both Trent shouldn't be playing RT and Wynn shouldn't be playing LT as they keep getting dinged up in those positions. Trent played a full season of LT here and Wynn has played LG in college. Maybe we play Trent at LT as he's not a run mauler, he's a gentle giant in demeanor and he can't stay healthy playing RT.

Wait. You are seriously telling me that you think a players injury history is caused by which side of the line they played on?

Please explain, since you ignored the last time I posted it, what you think the difference between playing LT and RT in 2021 exactly is. Not in 1983, in 2021.
Be sure to address that teams no longer play the TE almost exclusively on the right side, defenses move their pass rushers all over the field, and the fact that changes in offense and rules essentially eliminate the “blind side”.

Defenses move players everywhere but you can't change the fact our QB is right handed and the blind side is LT. And Trent Brown is elite at pass protection, a better pass blocker than he is a run blocker. You keep insisting throwing him at RT when he isn't great at RT nor does he stay healthy at RT. This whole thing is moot because once Wynn gets hurt again it will end up being the OLine lineup that makes sense.

.

IR rules cause most of these "missed games". An 8-game IR stint may involve an injury of 3-4 weeks duration. But the team doesn't want to be shorthanded for 3-4 weeks, and they may not be 100% sure when he'll be healed, so they put him on the 8 week list.

There is really no blind side any more. Almost all passes are out of the shot gun, you can’t hit a qb any more, it’s nothing like when blind side mattered.
Brown had been equally as good on the right side as the left.
Now you have added the bizarre idea that a T getting injured is based upon which side he lined up on.
The reason to keep Wynn on the left is because it is the only spot he has played in the nfl save a handful of snaps. The reason to play brown on the right is it is where he has played every year but one.

If changing things because of injury is your concern
A) brown has missed more games than Wynn the last 2 years and
B) no matter where you play anyone if there is an injury you make changes

I think that based on the number of games missed by Wynn and brown these past few years, bb needs to draft a couple offensive tackles.

I think they need to be forsythe of Florida and s. Brown of northern iowa.

They're going to choose the path that disrupts the least number of positions I think. That means Wynn at LT, where he's done well, and Brown at RT

The Andrews signing makes the Karras even more significant because now we have a proven starter ready to sub in if any of the starting five go down. If Wynn misses time for the fourth straight year, Brown shifts to LT, Onwenu back to RT, and Karras goes in at LG. Here’s how I see it if an injury occurs to:

Wynn:

LT Brown
LG Karras
C Andrews
RG Mason
RT Onwenu

Onwenu:

LT Wynn
LG Karras
C Andrews
RG Mason
RT Brown

Andrews:

LT Wynn
LG Onwenu
C Karras
RG Mason
RT Brown

Mason:

LT Wynn
LG Onwenu
C Andrews
RG Karras
RT Brown

Brown:

LT Wynn
LG Karras
C Andrews
RG Mason
RT Onwenu

We’re in a jam if two starters go down at once but that 7th OL guy may be picked in the draft assuming it’s not Herron set for that role.
Your exercise just shows me why we need to develop more OL depth in this draft or in the 3rd wave (after the draft) FA market. I mean it IS possible that either Herron, Elumanour, or Cajuste or whomever else is on the current roster could step in a OG if one of the starters goes down. IIRC Elumanour played some OG with the Ravens and did well. Did he play the position here? I don't recall.

Ideally we find in the 4th round some OL prospect who can play both G and C. He is G depth to start, then backs up Andrews, then in year 3 or 4 becomes the starter, The division 3 kid for example.

Eluemunor’s bio on the Patriots website has a pretty good breakdown of his roles. According to it he came in at left guard for Week 1 in 2019 and came in at center late last season, but otherwise has been deployed as a tackle on either side. I’d venture to guess he can still fill in at guard in a pinch.

I definitely agree on the need to draft some offensive linemen. Brown and Karras are free agents next offsesson and Wynn has a club option to wrap up his rookie contract. Cajuste is a dark horse because he came in 2019 as a terrific tackle prospect but hasn’t shown anything yet due to injury. If he makes the team this year he has the upside to be a starter at either tackle position some day. But it would be wise for the Pats to still look at drafting an offensive lineman or two.
