Patriots place 2nd Round Tender on JC Jackson

i was amongst the 1st rd crowd but makes perfect sense. I think a crazy offer is unlikely and we’ll save some bucks in the process

Surtain will likely be gone before 15. A team like the cowboys could draft him. Don’t get it.

This isn't necessarily a dumb move. The Pats have the rights to match any offer. Because of the reduction in the cap and so many teams up against the cap, Jackson is likely to get offers that will be far below what he would get as a free agent next year. More so than if he was a RFA in any other year. Then the Pats can match what would be a below market deal in any other year.

I think this could be Bill trying to get Jackson on a long term deal that is below market without insulting him with the deal for himself.

Didn't see this before I posted. But I guess great minds think alike.
its a decent hypothesis. if its too much they get a 2nd, extend gilmore and add more ammo to trade up.

I can see the Pats drafting Surtain if available at 15.
I think BB likes grabbing “expensive positions” in the first round : CB, LT... he can spend on safety & TE as they are much cheaper than those I mentioned.

This was a needless risk unless Bill is ready to open up the bank vaults on a huge $13m contract for JC.

Consider our track record drafting DBs in the 2nd round:

JoeJuan Williams
Duke Dawson
Cyrus Jones
Jordan Richards
Tavon Wilson
Ras-I Dowling

Would you rather have JC at $13m or one of these guys?
JC is not a $13m/yr player.

He is. There’s guys paid higher in that range that aren’t better than him.

On a side note, Byron Jones being paid higher than Howard and Gilmore is laughable. Slay is also overpaid.

If we do get a 2nd for Jackson, that gives us ammo to trade up for a QB. I'd be okay with that trade off.

Someone like Farley would be extremely intriguing in the late first with a trade down from 15 if we need to replace one or both corners this year. I'd rather keep our secondary intact if possible, but Williams + Farley (or Stokes in the 2nd - 3rd range) could be solid. It's all about attitude with Williams. When he's been on the field, he's acquitted himself fairly well, but one has to wonder why he's not getting more playing time.

JC is not a #1 CB period. We saw what happened when he matched up vs 1s and it wasn't great.

Some teams are dumb. What can I say.

Gilmore signed his deal in 2017. Over the last 4 years hes been paid $14.2m AAV. I agree $7m for 2021 is low but it's not like the NEP got him cheap 2017-2020.

No one is going to make a serious run on JC with the second round tender. It just doesn't happen. The Pats save a little off the cap, and Jackson gets a fat raise. Besides having another good year here sets him up for a breakout FA contract. If Gilmore is back as it seems more and more likely, then Jackson will once again be seeing a lot of passes.

I can see the Patriots not being as high as us fans about JC Jackson.

I agree he's not a #1 and failed miserably defending top WR's. But some guys that are paid in the range of $13M are not better than him. That was my point.

It really is a win/win move in my opinion.

Either someone else negotiates the contract for you and that contract will be below market value given that they have to give away a second round pick as well. And if it ends up too rich for us we will get back better compensation than a potential third round comp pick in 2 years.

All this while saving a million.
