Can we finally stop pretending that Cam is good?

I disagree with that. Since some of his incentives are based on getting the teams to the playoffs or the SB. If he is a backup he has no shot to reach those incentives.

you don’t sign a backup contract were potentially 3M in incentives are tied to your post season playing time!

Standard backup QB contract. Go look at some other vet backup deals and you'll understand that's just how they structure them.

Last year they got Cam because they didn't have cap room and couldn't upgrade the offense.

This year they signed Cam to a backup-level contract.

They just spent almost $100m in total contract value upgrading the passing offense.

Do you really believe Bill doesn't think he can upgrade the QB position over Cam Newton? Really? You don't think he won't try?
I believe that BB still thinks Newton is good.

Of course he still thinks he's good. He has value as a veteran backup who can run the offense when necessary.

That does not mean he thinks he thinks he is the end all be all choice to be the starter.

There is a chasm between these two concepts. Likely to start and depending on what happens in the next two months, likely to play 16 games....that means good enough to start.

Wish they signed Fitzpatrick

No question he is the better passer.

I've always found it strange how BB has had multiple opportunities to sign him but never has.

It is because Fitz thrives on chaos and improvisation and BB and McDaniels are running a precision offense. It is the same reason Wentz would have never been a fit with the way he goes off script.

Nothing strange about it.

they don't have an affinity for fitz-magic 4th quarter INTs?

Yea that's pretty accurate.

I mean, with excellent passers like Edelman & Meyers on the roster with an OL, RBs, and new toys ? Does Cam even need to be good ?

Is this, like, a joke or something?

Scam Newton executes a precision offense? Yeah right...good one...

Why are you trying to turn this into a political pissing match?
I didn't bring Covid into the conversation, I didn't bring Fauci into the conversation. YOU were the one who did that. So maybe you should look in the mirror and ask the same question.

Using Covid and Fauci as an excuse for Newton's atrociousness is weaksauce. So stop bringing politics into a football conversation.

Cam's testing positive for Covid is very much part of the conversation. Since Covid brainfog has been proven to be a real phenomenon, it could have played a big part in Cam's inability to progress through his reads fast enough and set himself up to get injured because he dallied with the ball too much.

How is it fair to say in 2019 that all Brady needed was talent, but that Cam sucks when played with the same offense in 2020?

Is Cam a top 5 QB? No, but with the right talent around him he can be very effective, hence his MVP season, and he has that talent this year.

It also doesn't mean the pats shouldn't look for a superior player but to write Cam off after last season is foolish, and Bill clearly agrees otherwise he wouldn't have re-signed him.

His MVP season was 5 years ago.

I guess its possible, but i don't think 'brain fogg' would be responsible for newton throwing the ball in the dirt or missing a receiver by three feet on a ten yard pass, I think a shoulder injury would.

Hurley with a not particularly low level breakdown of how the fanbase is bonkers and he is sick of people saying Newton can't throw the ball.

It is essentially the counterpoint to that weird and incredibly biased thread Ian made at the end of the season.

Of course the bozos who should check it out won't because it won't reinforce wht they want to hear.

For everyone else it should give some optimism if Cam ends up being QB1.

Because Brady went to an offense filled with weapons and threw 50 TDs en route to a Super Bowl MVP immediately after leaving the Patriots. And also the fact that he has been a much, much, much better passer than Cam Newton throughout his career (was a better passer than Newton when Cam won his MVP even). So yeah, Tom gets the benefit of the doubt on that front.
