Thuney To Chiefs

KC had about 12M in cap space after what Mahomes did and can make a bit more if they need too (low 20s I think). I don't understand this move for them at all. I know he played some OT for us last year, but he isn't an OT or C. I know they could use a little help at guard, but that currently is their strongest position on the OL. Unless the plan is to have Thuney play OT (bad plan IMO) this seems like a bad investment for them. They should use their relatively limited resources elsewhere on that line.

I’m sure magically they can sign a tackle as well.

Just 4 restructures (Clark, Jones, Hill, and Kelce) will create $40 million of cap space, if they want it. They can create that space without needing the players to agree to anything.

Great signing for them. Can play LT, both guard positions as well as center for emergency pinch.

Pats can’t draft wr’s like the Steelers or Chiefs but they sure as hell have a great track record of drafting offensive lineman. It stings but we’re still in great shape with what we’ve got.

They can open up $40m of cap space pretty easily. The Thuney deal is probably also back loaded from a cap perspective

I don't think they can open up that much. Maybe 10-15M more. 20M more would surprise me. 40? I don't see it. We will find out though.

Still have a hole at left tackle. Likely might draft a LT.
Trying to draft a starting LT is a risky proposition. Particularly at 31. If that is their plan I think it's a highly questionable one. It may well be their only option though.

Damn. I was hoping we could find a way to keep him, but not at that much. Wish him the best of luck with the Queefs unless it’s against us. Keeping Andrews now becomes imperative.

As much as I like Thuney, you don't pay top dollar for a guard IMO. OL is all about where you're weak, not where you're strong (outside of LT and maybe RT too). Ideally you have good players everywhere on your OL. 1 scrub can ruin the game for 4 all pros. Not to say you shouldn't have a true ace along the OL (and it can be a guard). But if that is the case you better be sure your other 4 guys can let him make an impact.

thats big money. loved him as a patriot but we were never going to pay that money. If chiefs can pul lthat sort of deal with the cap problems they have it means Bill still has signficant money to throw around.
this is kinda cool.

Hill has 2 years left and his cap hit this year is 15.8 and next is 20.7. I don't see them messing with it without an extension. Any extension with Hill will cost them a lot more AVV. He is a 20M+/yr WR whose been paid 16.5M over the last 2 years. He'll want a big pay increase, and for the impact he has on the game he'll get it.

Clark has about 38M in locked up cash is will be making 25M+ over the next 3 years. Messing with his contract will only lock his bad cap number in for the next few years. He isn't worth that much.

They already messed with Jones contract. He is now due 29M and 27M in the next 2 years after this one with 14M in a dead hit if cut. They might be able to cut him in that last year for only a 7M hit but it will still hurt a lot. They gave him a ton of leverage. He's worth keeping around, but I don't see them giving him even more leverage.

Kelce is getting paid under 6M this year. I think they played with his contract already too. He's 32. How much more dead money do they want to give him? at 34, 35 and 36 his cap hits are about 15, 17 and 19M. I don't know how much they want to lock those in.

I'm not saying they can't create 40M if they REALLY want to, but if they do the blow up happens next year. Maybe that isn't a bad thing, but it seems kind of early for them. Anyway the contract you didn't mention was Mathieu, which IMO is the easiest one for them to play with anyway.

Edit: Correction. I failed to take into account the new numbers after the moves with Kelce and Jones. Before signing Thuney they had 33M in cap space. Assuming 10M for Thuney this leaves them with 23M. Unless his deal is also massively back loaded. They can afford an OT, but not 2 very likely. We will see what they do. They are already very much in danger of being forced to blow it up after this year if they do too much more back loading though. They said they want Trent Williams and would be willing to pay 20M for him if that's what it took. They still need to solve C and RT though.

Chefs need to draft a TE.

Since when don't players need to agree on a restructured contract?

Happy for Joe that he’s getting paid...but how totally gross that it’s the Chiefs. :crying:

Contracts typically come with a clause that the team can pay out salary as a signing bonus at their discretion. Players only need to agree if the team needs to add years

Okay because that is the same thing. Enjoy your day.
Okay I will make it easier for you. The Patriots were covid away from being a playoff team last year. Having Thuney made them that much better. While I don't think Bill was expecting to win it all, and felt last year was the reset year, he still realized he had a not bad team, and if you make the playoffs who knows what is going to happen. Further, I imagine that Bill does not make most of his decisions based upon whether or not the NFL will deign to grant a comp pick or not, he may take it into account but who knows. Now if during the year, someone had come and offered a pick for Thuney he might well have taken it. It didn't happen so he is now gone, and my guess is he will end up as another pat o-lineman that is overpaid by a team to leave, and then completely underperforms his contract.

How do the Chiefs pay top dollar for so many different positions.

by praying that none of them get hurt.. the second they take a few key injuries, the wheels fall off

I'm astounded at the difference I see in Thuney's farewell vs Brady's.
Thuney was pursued by the Pats, was paid well here, was offered a fortune, left to go to an AFC rival and Pats fans are blowing kisses at him.
Brady was practically forced to leave, was underpaid, wasn't offered much, left to go to another division for a reasonable amount and was vilified here.
I don't get it, I really don't.
