Thuney To Chiefs

Weird. They let both their starting tackles go and then pay a guard (granted one of the best guards in the league) to a record setting contract. I figured they would spend their limited cap space on a tackle.

Maybe they can still buy a tackle.

Bummer. Good for Joe though

Happy for him , but to the Chiefs !!!

Damn. I was hoping we could find a way to keep him, but not at that much. Wish him the best of luck with the Queefs unless it’s against us. Keeping Andrews now becomes imperative.

Disappointed. Thuney is an elite pass blocker. He won't be all that easy to replace. We're probably gonna pick up an OL in the first 2 rounds.

Yea we need Andrews.

Yeah I seriously do not understand the cap at all...how can they afford this?

By giving him a low base salary this year and a proration of his signing bonus over 5 years. That's why a lot of people are calling this a 3y 48M deal. The two years at the end are essentially just there to spread the bonus over a longer period of time.

we all saw this coming but the fact he’s signing with kc... oof

They restructured Mahomes a few days ago, if I recall correctly, to open up cap room.

Cap space can generally be manufactured pretty easily. The real way to avoid “cap hell” is to sign good players and to minimize the actual cash spent during the period the player’s on the team. The first 10 years of the NFL salary cap era (94 - 04 or thereabouts) teams were learning the cap and getting used to these issues. Over the last dozen or so years, teams have tended to be much better at it. You rarely see teams in cap hell anymore and when they are, it’s just for one season (Patriots last year).

That's actually a great signing for KC. Sucks for us to lose him to a team that will be in the pathway the next few years.

Yup. You can pass the buck for years. If you never address it, you will have a year like what we had this season or the Saints have now. But you can endure a one year hit and then get back in it. Mahomes married himself to the Chiefs so he can be flexible in how his money comes in.

Love the player, but glad that the Pats didn’t match that deal.

Cap is crap.

Is he going to play tackle for them?

KC had about 12M in cap space after what Mahomes did and can make a bit more if they need too (low 20s I think). I don't understand this move for them at all. I know he played some OT for us last year, but he isn't an OT or C. I know they could use a little help at guard, but that currently is their strongest position on the OL. Unless the plan is to have Thuney play OT (bad plan IMO) this seems like a bad investment for them. They should use their relatively limited resources elsewhere on that line.
