Marcus Cannon traded to Texans

Over/under on how many of these 3 upgraded picks will be traded down from on draft day?

Answer: 2

Interesting! With the Trent Brown trade and now this, it sounds like BB will be as active this off season as many pundits thought.

any word on a player to be named later involved in the deal? I can think of a guy or 4 we could use...

We went from having picks 121 159 and 197 to picks 110 148 and 188. Using the nfl point system we gained 30 points, or in the range of a high 5th rounder.

I wonder if Belichick is trying to get trade capital to potentially trade up for a QB. Sure this trade alone means nothing, but to get into the top ten the Pats will be likely to have to give up two firsts and a couple of other later round picks.

Next is downgrading three draft picks to acquire a 33 year old RT that struggled in 2019. Was Caserio part of the problem?

WF are working hard but they have no clue.

Caserio is doing nice quiet work to clean up the mess BOB left him with. Trading away LB for a younger/better EDGE player earlier today on similar cap and gaining a higher round pick is how you build with limited resources.

If the straight swap of same round picks for HOU tops is true this one would be a first slight head scratcher or - a back scratcher (Caserio doing Bill a solid with possible many returns ;) ).

Reiss has reported earlier that Pats did not have Cannon even in the building yet for passing physical - fwiw - so this trade might be still pending the physical.

In any case this move washes Brown's trade and recuperates 4th pick lost in the comp after math..
(by trade value chart this combined gain is @ the 4th comp value - so might be also a nicely wrapped middle finger to NFL mathematicians :) )

Moving up in the first round for a raw player who'll sit the bench would fit with the Newton signing.

So can we now say that these new higher picks in the 4th 5th and 6th rounds are cannon fodder for the renewed Patriots 2021 campaign?

how much cap space does this leave the patriots now?

If they'd be hypothetically fine with trading future assets then none of those pick swaps and day 2/3 shenanigans will really matter and they'd definitely get one of the QBs early.

But they have never under BB traded away future assets. So that's a big question mark on how strong the evaluation on Fields/Lance et al really is.

Imo the Cannon trade was just one of those something for nothing trades that puts them into a slightly better position to navigate during the draft and the Texans get a competent player and great locker room guy.

65.3M without Brown's contract (details unknown still) included according to Miguel.

Weird way to transfer what probably amounts to just one 5th or 6th worth of value.
Probably because Houston needs the picks now and can’t afford to give up one.

I think we are at the point where you need to be in the top 10 to get one of the top 5 QBs.

1) Jags
2) Jets
4) Falcons
8) Carolina

The Lions are a question mark at 7. Eagles could be looking at one of the top QBs too at 6. Broncos may not be in love with Drew Lock, they have the 9th pick. And the 49ers may be in the market at 12. I think, IF Belichick is looking to draft one of the top 5 QBs, a trade to Cincy at 5 would be smart.

Texans acquired OT Marcus Cannon from the Patriots.

The deal reportedly includes pick swaps in the fourth, fifth, and sixth round of the draft. Cannon opted out of the 2020 season and his health was a mixed bag before this past year. He was only active for 50 of a possible 64 games from 2016 to 2019 but Cannon did start in every game he was healthy for. Cannon was graded as an above-average pass-blocker by Pro Football Focus in 2019 while playing over 1,000 snaps, all of which came at right tackle. The Texans have been active in the trade market to open the new league year but the elephant in the room remains Deshaun Watson's status with the team.
