Interesting development on the Jimmy G front

"Even take that season out" and you're talking about a 4 game stretch against 4 mediocrities (7-8-1, 10-6 team coached by Gase, 9-7, 7-9). But, to repeat what I said, which was about 2008:

So, what can we use to base that Bill can win games with a different QB? We have to throw out 2008, we have to throw out 2016. I suppose next we have to throw out the 7 wins last year because there is some argument of why they should've lost those games.

We are really going through mental gymnastics to say Bill can't win games with another QB. I'm not even talking championship. I'm just talking winning regular season games. Which we have seen them win with other QBs.

Should we start discounting certain brady wins with tampa because of other factors? Like receiver talent, or drew brees arm fell off?

Not everything is a slight on brady. Plenty of teams win games with above average QBs. Nothing shows me Bill couldn't win games with a serviceable QB as long as his roster was talented. Many lesser coaches do.

In 2008, they went 11-5 and lost the division/playoffs on a ridiculous tiebreaker.

They didn't go into that season without an all-world QB. They lost him in the first game. That's a very different thing.

not sure what you’re getting at here, they essentially played the season without brady

But they didn't play the preseason without Brady. Nor did they prepare in the preseason for a season without Brady.

Do you think it really would have made a difference record wise? They won 3 of the first 4 and the 1 loss was the wildcat game- that had very little to do with the qb or offense

You’re in a free agency period where only a few teams have any real money to spend, and the Patriots are one of them. If, say, Golladay, Tomlinson and Smith were included in this year’s draft, would they be taken in the 1st round?
I don't believe this is true for the top FAs. For the middle class, yes.
The Patriots are in a situation where they perhaps can sign 4 or 5 of the top 20 available free agents. Players of a caliber that if they were in this draft wouldn’t make it out of the top 20 picks.
They could but that's not Bill's pattern, is it? Is this what you wish they'd do or what you think they'll do?

You’re going to be able to sign a quality of player that won’t be available to you in the draft, and you can sign more of them. It would be foolish to not avail yourself fully of the opportunity by trying to get the QB you need anyway on the cheap.

In short, I’d rather trade a 2nd round pick plus now for Garappolo, a top FA WR, and a top FA TE rather than trade a 4th rounder a month from now for just Garappolo.
The whole Jimmy trade thing is far fetched to me. Don't think this is anymore than Lynch kicking a few tires to see what shakes out.

Yes, I do. The little things add up.

It doesn’t make any sense to me to trade for Jimmy G. The compensation we would send isn’t the motivation for the 49ers to move on from him, it will be clearing $20+mil in cap space. If the 49ers find a replacement they will be forced to release him because no other team will trade for that contract and they a desperate for cap space. SF has about $24mil available but they essentially have no CB’s on the roster and no LT. Freeing up that Jimmy G money would make it much easier to re-sign guys like Trent Williams and Jason Verrett.

A lot of analysts have predicted it and I think it’s the most logical outcome that the 49ers trade for Sam Darnold. It’s not that he is necessarily an upgrade over Jimmy G, it’s that he is over $18mil cheaper. SF thinks they are Super Bowl contenders with only slightly above average QB play, so they won’t release Jimmy without a replacement. As soon as they do I think he will be cut immediately.

I think a swap of 1’s with SF trading 1(12) to the NYJ for 1(23) + Darnold makes the most sense. The Jets get a 2nd round value for Darnold. The 49ers don’t lose any premium picks, they just move back and save over $18mil in cap space. Jimmy comes home to New England and everyone is happy.

I understand the desire to have a QB in place at the start of FA so we are more attractive to free agent WR’s and TE’s. We just need to be patient because we would be bidding against ourselves. SF has very little leverage because Jimmy also has a full no trade clause. They will want this to happen sooner rather than later so they have the cap space at the beginning of free agency. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen over the next week.

Those Dumbass had Brady gift wrapped to them and chose Jimmy and are now interested in any qb living
They never had a chance at Brady.

Yeah, NE is probably one of very few interested teams at that money (and Jimmy has to agree to the trade anyway so who knows if he'd agree to go to some other team), and if they move on, SF is probably forced to cut him outright and get nothing. Who else is gonna trade for him? Few teams even have the money. SF knows NE wants Jimmy before FA starts, but NE also knows SF wants the cap space before FA starts, so those two things kind of cancel out and as we get closer to the 17th, SF probably sweats more and more.

I still think a swap of Gilmore for Jimmy & a pick makes the most sense. SF needs a CB badly - they can get one of the best in the league and pay him in such a way to push hits into future years and keep this year low. They get enough space to make other needed moves.

Dunno why everyone thinks Jimmy will end up here. My biggest problem with the rumor...is what will San Francisco do at QB if Jimmy is traded/released? SF isn't letting him go without a QB in the pipeline.....ditto for Seattle and Wilson even if we offered them 3 first round picks and Gilmore...

Trade for Darnold.

Trade for Darnold.

But that has to happen soon, right? I mean the Pats are adding their QB next week? Or are the Pats gonna sit pat and wait for draft night when the Jets decide to go with Wilson over Darnold, right?

If those trades were real then it would happen soon yes. I think the Patriots decisions are not entirely in their control. If there are players they want, they will have info on availability and price. Same for draft picks. Either way, a lot of pieces would have to fall in place. My guess is that there is a big decision tree with plans A-Z. Nothing would surprise me.

This post clears things up for me on this JG thing. Seems awfully complicated. If the main goal is to free up cap space, couldn't they simply add a couple of voidable years to his contract and turn the salary into bonus to reduce the cap hit? I know it prolongs the dead money hit.

I still cannot help thinking that with all this talk about the Pats being interested in Garoppolo that this is a misdirection. Belichick rarely shows his cards like this. There is no upside and only downside in telegraphing this. If Belichick seems so desperate to get Jimmy G, it will just allow the 49ers to drive up the price.

I wouldn't be shocked if Belichick went after Darnold or someone else selling it as he really wanted Garoppolo but the 49ers aren't playing ball and the guy he really wanted is his plan B and just testing the water just in case he cannot get Garoppolo.

In fact, I would expect that if Belichick really wanted Garoppolo, he would let it leak that he is losing interest in him and looking elsewhere to light a candle under Lynch's butt to make a deal before he loses out on the team that might give him the best compensation for Jimmy G.

Talk is heating up that Washington may trade for Jimmy.

Is Jimmy the next Adam Seward or Larry Fitzgerald?

Rarely does BB do what this board expects him to do. How many of these threads do we have of Pats looking to sign/trade for "Player A" and it never happens. Unless Jimmy is cut (which he won't be) I just don't see this happening.
