Player Signing Trent Brown trade to Pats

Mason has 3 year left on his contract. He's currently 8th on the list. Why can't the Patriots do it? Have you looked at their cap space going forward? 66M this year. Even if they used up all that space, they'd still have over $75M in cap space for next season at the projected $200M cap.

And that doesn't include whatever happens to Cannon.

Also, some of us are project Thuney to Center. And I don't see why they couldn't pay their Center and RG at the top for those positions with the cap space that they have..

First, Thuney is gone. I don't know why we are even discussing this. If the Pats were going to keep him, they would be in discussions now with him. From every report I have seen, that doesn't seem to be the case. Once he hits the illegal tampering phase in a few days (if not now) he is likely to get a break the bank deal with another team.

Second, the Pats may have cap room, but they have a lot holes to fill beyond the o-line. If they trade for Jimmy Garoppolo, they will lose close to a third of their cap space without renegotiating with him. They need WRs and TEs and good WRs and TEs take up a lot of cap space. They need to fix the holes on the d-line and LBer. I don't see them paying Thuney top dollar as a priority.

Third, I don't see Thuney at center. He is a top guard in this league. Why would they pay him top dollar and try to move him to center? Do we even know he can properly snap the ball (see Damien Woody who was a great guard who went to center and could snap a shotgun snap for the life of him).

Yep, this was a foregone conclusion last off season after they were "far apart" in negotiations. If Bill wanted him, a deal would've been done last off season where he would've been cheaper.

Also, Thuney won't want to play C as he'd get more money as a G.

Mason isn't in the top 10 paid guards in the NFL anymore.

If the Pats want to give Thuney a 4 year deal, they can, easily.

Mason has the seventh highest cap hit for a guard in 2021 (not including Scherff who just got franchised) and the fourth highest cap hit in 2022 and 2023.

49ers might draft a LT b/c they will loose Trent Williams.

I wonder which teams have 2 starting caliber LTs?

I wonder which team has a starting QB which has experience in the Patriots offense?

My bad. I was using Over the Cap that breaks up the guards between right and left guards as two different categories.

Mason is a good deal for the Pats for the next three years.

I remember Woody wasn't happy being moved to center. I think guards and tackles look at that as lesser position. Guards definitely get to be more active in a lot of plays in terms of pulling and working as down the field blockers while centers usually go head on with the NT on every play.

You might be mixing him up as he was a C in College and drafted to play Center. He was moved guard on passing downs because he was so bad at snapping the football. Eventually moved to G fulltime in 2003 with the emergence of Koppen.

You are right. I got it backwards. My bad. Batting a .1000 in this thread tonight.

Speaking of Scherf and price tags, he just got franchised for the second time so the price tag is $18 million.

makes the price tag for the Pats OL look like a bargain basement collection.

I'm surprised GB didn't tag Corey Lindsley.

I was thinking LT for first pick, now with Brown, QB or NT/DT are the only natural options left.

I still haven't heard an answer to my earlier question as to how much more it would cost to keep Thuney long term to play C, vs signing Andrews long term????

Assuming Thuney would be willing to be the Pats long term C, I think he'd end up being the best choice. BTW- having a great C is critically important especially in the run game. Being able to get to and effectively block at the 2nd level is a rare skill. Andrews is good at it and our run game suffered greatly when he missed the 2019 season. I think Thuney would be even better as well as being able to hold up better if a team decides to put a big NT over him to bully him.

So I ask again, what would the Pats likely to be paying Andrews per year, vs what would they likely have to pay Thuney (again assuming he;d want to stay and change positions, at which point this whole post becomes moot. The thing is that the ONLY way I can see Thuney staying is if he is willing to take top money to play C here. If he want only to stay at LG, then he is gone.

I am guessing Thuney would have to paid as the top paid guard to be the Pats' center. And that would make him the top paid center by quite a bit.

Andrews is likely to get paid well. But he won't get top of the market. He is a very good center.

Spotrac has Andrews @ $7.1M AAS and Thuney @ $15.3M, so more than double.
PFF/OTC has Andrews @ $6M AAS and Thuney @ $14.3M, so more than double.
Many here wouldn't sign Andrews @ $5M AAS & Thuney @ $11M, so more than double.

If we have another season of Cam, at least Brown will force his arm to be a bit higher in his throwing motion. Can't throw those dirt ducks if you have a literal mountain in front of you.
