Say he is worth only $4M. Then the patriots would cut him, and he'll sign somewhere else for $4M.

If the patriots want to give to convert lots of his slary to bonus, and some to incentives, that fine. But that won't happen if the team thinks that he is worth as little as you say.

The bottom line is that the team might cut him before the roster bonus, but only if the negotiate a deal with someone else first. The next time is not clear. Even a draftee would not mean that he should be cut before camp.

It’s still as cap-friendly in the short term as a contract that size can be. It’s expected to have a $22.2M cap hit this season, and a relatively low cap hit next year too when it’s restructured to push more dead money into the two void years in 2025 and 2026.

that's 12% of the 2021 cap....that's reasonable

what's relatively low next year come in at? we know that 12.5-13% of the hit is kind of the established threshold......once you start approaching that 35 mil cap hit range, you really need the cap to come in at 250+ to stay close to that.....

I guess we think differently. You seem to think that signing a roster bonus guarantees a player s pot on the 53, no matter what happens later in free agency, or in camp. The roster bonus is an inexpensive option. It is similar to signing a free agent and giving him a bonus. Of course such a player isn't guaranteed a place on the 53. Besides, having such a player or Cannon also constitutes insurance against a rookie being injured or not being ready to play a major role in 2021.

If they do a maximum restructure next season, his cap hit could get as low as $18M.

2025: $13.2M (dead money, since the contract voids)

A max restructure in 2022 would make it:
2021: $22.2M
2022: $18M
2023: $48M
2024: $51M
2025: $20.8M (dead money, since the contract voids)

They'll have to take the giant cap hits at some point, but there's definitely flexibility to do whatever they need to in the short term.

so reasonable this year, reasonable next year assuming the cap rises to at least 240 million (using the 13% of overall payroll) as a threshold - 2023 & 2024 you'd need to see a cap up over $350 mil to get at or under that magic 13% mark

Love his 2020 game, and there's a real chance the other stuff was just the result of playing for the Jest in the past, but he very strongly fits the profile of a guy who will check out after signing a megadeal.
