Pete Carroll f'ed up, but not for the reason most people seem to think. An incomplete pass also gives them another play. A stuffed run wouldn't.
The odds of throwing a pick there are astronomically low - probably as low as fumbling.
Carroll didn't make the wrong call. Belichick let the clock run to force that play, and the Pats had practiced against it all week. Pure preparation. No other team/coach would have played it like BB did (yet another reason the hate for him on this board is utterly ridiculous).
The miracle catch brought Seattle to the 5 yard line with 1:06 left, and went out of bounds stopping the clock. Despite the fact that the clock was stopped, Seattle did not get lined up for their next play in time and had to waste a timeout, leaving them with 1. (That was their first mistake as a result of poor coaching)
The next play was a run attacking the b-gap to the 1 yard line. 4 yard gain. The play ended with 1:01 left setting up 2nd and goal. They killed 36 seconds before the next snap (mistake #2). So, with only 25 seconds left, that created a situation where they had to throw it on either 2nd or 3rd down. At this point, there isn't enough time to simply run the ball on 2nd, 3rd and 4th down.
