Are the Chiefs in trouble?

An incomplete pass also gives them another play. A stuffed run wouldn't.

The odds of throwing a pick there are astronomically low - probably as low as fumbling.

Carroll didn't make the wrong call. Belichick let the clock run to force that play, and the Pats had practiced against it all week. Pure preparation. No other team/coach would have played it like BB did (yet another reason the hate for him on this board is utterly ridiculous).
Pete Carroll f'ed up, but not for the reason most people seem to think.

The miracle catch brought Seattle to the 5 yard line with 1:06 left, and went out of bounds stopping the clock. Despite the fact that the clock was stopped, Seattle did not get lined up for their next play in time and had to waste a timeout, leaving them with 1. (That was their first mistake as a result of poor coaching)

The next play was a run attacking the b-gap to the 1 yard line. 4 yard gain. The play ended with 1:01 left setting up 2nd and goal. They killed 36 seconds before the next snap (mistake #2). So, with only 25 seconds left, that created a situation where they had to throw it on either 2nd or 3rd down. At this point, there isn't enough time to simply run the ball on 2nd, 3rd and 4th down.

It was clear Mahones wasn't right in the SB.
What makes you say that? He ran circles around the TB defense. Made them look like damn fools. Then, at the last moment when the defense finally converged on him, he would throw a falling-down laser beam to his intended receiver.

The problem wasn't Mahomes, it was the receivers who let the ball bounce off their helmets.

This was my take away. He was buying time, taking hits, and still making ridiculous throws that were dead on only to be dropped. His guys quit on him. Kelce was done by the third quarter. Hill didn't seem to want to play after being doubled. His O-line was banged up. Mahomes was far from the problem.

I agree the refs screwed the Browns, but it's a far cry to say the Browns would have definitely won the game if it weren't for that play.
It was more than that one play - the Chiefs DBs were playing grab'em on every play (as were the Bucs against the Packers, by the way).

Point is, Cleveland certainly could have won that game.

Chiefs are still the class of the AFC. Someone will come out of nowhere next year to challenge - Chargers, Ravens, Bills?
But they're beatable and they're not physical, as we saw. Mahomes winning the SB next year wouldn't surprise me, losing curse be damned, but it's far from certain that he'll get there next year.

If he has a long career and doesn't get to three more, I'll be surprised. yes, he's that good.

He was limping around. However, the chiefs biggest problems were mainly pass protection and drops by the receivers.

He walked gingerly between plays, but during plays he made fools of the TB defense. He ran for more yards than he normally does. He got sacked a couple times but with that paper mache offensive line KC fielded, any other QB would've been sacked twice as much.

I'd be running for my life too if JPP, Suh, and Barrett were coming after me

In the short term, sure. Decent chance the Pats win their next title before the Chiefs.

That play was a 10 point swing. They lost by 5, so...

There's no guarantee the Browns would have scored on that drive if the helmet-to-helmet penalty were enforced

I saw/read an interview with Suh last week. He emphasized they were working on contain with Mahomes. So I think the goal was to keep him going backwards/sideways or at least stay in front of him so he couldn’t step up in the pocket. TB had almost no problem getting into the backfield. Instead of aggressively going for sacks, they made it their top priority to keep Mahomes within their area, almost like a zone.

Obviously takes a lot of unselfishness, discipline, and trust in the unit to pull this off. I think Kansas City figured Mahomes would do his typical sidestep on these guys running full speed. Instead, he they wouldn’t let him...and as he continued to buy more time, more guys were breaking through to cause havoc. It was a group effort based on the idea Mahomes would tuck and scramble and predicting correctly that pinning your ears back and lunging for a sack (and missing) is the exact thing that Kansas City needed.

Also @XLIX you’re not wrong that there were a lot of drops by Kansas City receivers, but look at the lack of of velocity on those ducks. Result of Mahomes not being able to step into anything. Not blaming Mahomes for them - amazing he was able to time them like that - but clearly with all of those drops it was due to irregular timing and irregular zip, like hitting an Eephus pitch when you haven’t practiced it.

That's your best attempt at an argument? To giggle like a mentally handicapped school girl? Sad.
Lol very aggressive.

Anyways what in your right mind makes you think that the best QB in the league in a relatively weak conference won't make it back soon, let alone next year, while a team with no QB, no receivers, no TEs, no LBs will be back before the Chiefs?

'Then they at least get a FG. So it's a six-point swing.

The Chiefs have a window to compete for titles, and they are currently in it, but you can only kick the can so far down the road with regards to Mahomes' salary. If you are suggesting above that they restructure his roster bonus every year then you math is extremely faulty regarding the true cap savings.

They have to pay the piper eventually. They will discover why having a good team for a few years is one thing, but having a 20 year dynasty is something else entirely.
Mahomes put himself ahead of the team and winning with that contract. He has a ton of endorsement deals in addition to that obscene contract. It's just pure greed. By squeezing every last penny out of the Chiefs he has made it more difficult for them to build a contender long term.
