ESPN writer predicts Godwin and Watkins to NE

Godwin is not happening.
In a cap constrained year, I have difficulty believing BB will pay a premium WR who will touch the ball on average 5-6 times a game in the neighborhood $1 mill/game

I dont see bb splurging on wr. The only times ive really seen him splurge on fa was colvin, adalius, and Gilmore. Ab was the closest at wr, but that was a 1 year deal. Its too risky in this system especially without brady now.

I don’t see many big contracts this march here but probably alot of mid level fa’s to fill more holes.

Seems like a lot of money for Godwin. Wonder what asking price for Hilton is? And its not going to happen but does Larry Fitz have any thread on the tyres? Throwing an extra 12 to 15 mill does a lot to this WR corps. another 5-10 on TE. rest goes into Oline and D. and draft. Oh yeah, and then theres QB to consider.
Thats of course without any savings from retirements and cuts.

No way this roster is ready to compete next year even with $60 mill.
With an adequate QB they would have competed last year. Do you know how many positions can be upgraded with $60,000,000? Given that it’s 60,000,000 in first year cap hit you are taking almost half a team.

Sounds about right now that Godwin suddenly has the dropsies.

Very few home grown wide receivers have done well for Belichick. The Pats need to solve this problem area in free agency and this is going to be their best opportunity to do it based on the quality of the free agent class/cap space.

Godwin is only 24 and should have room to grow into a true number one. That's what this team needs.

Confused by the people saying not to sign Godwin until they have signed a QB. Godwin, makes our weapons more attractive to a potential QB. I don't think the order of signing matters much as much as having an all encompassing free agency plan. This team is not going to start the season without upgrading the QB, so adding a top notch receiver makes perfect sense.

I think Bill will stay away from the top free agent and will try to sign 2 tier players.

Even with 60M, I don’t think it’s the right time to go after top free agent.

Godwin will cost 20M/y in FA. As good as he is I don’t want to use a third of our cap space on one player who will not make a difference in the end with no QB and so many holes on the roster.

Even a guy like Davis who has never had a 1000 yards season will cost 15M. Bill didn’t want to pay Cooks 15M/y two years ago with 3 consecutive 1000+ yards season. Why would he pay 15M or 20M/y now for a WR now? In my mind, it make no sense.

can't pay $20mil for a hood ornament if you can't afford to put an engine in the car, or you can't afford to put gas in it

that being said, $20 mil a year contracts are not going to be handed out left and right this year.......you'll see some guys that are young and good (godwin might be one of them) who are given very creative contracts to limit the hit this year......

Using top end guys just because it makes it easier;
Mike Evans
D Adams
D waller
Akiem hicks
Danielle hunter.
Last years total cap hits 530000000 and those are not first year cap numbers.

Don’t understand what you are saying.
The patriots have 60 million, they can afford whatever they want.

I would agree that wrs are overpriced, but i don’t understand “why now”? Now is when he gave the cap space to rebuilt the team. This is an allIn offseason.
Also average contract and first year cap hit are not close to the same thing.

60 million isn't going far when you look at their FA's and their needs.......
Of course it will. I just posted a list of 5 superstars that add up to 53 mill and none were first year cap hits.
when you factor in the lower hits in year 1 you are literally talking about the ability to add half a team ( if the cap is 175 mill 87.5 is half a team)

If you want to sign 5 superstar in FA this year it will not cost only 53M I can tell you that.

the Rams have like 130M tied to their top 6 players.

with 60M we could sign 2-3 top FA but that would mean no QB and we resign 0 of our FA and we have like still 10-15 spot to fill.

As most posters have already said, I would be surprised with either signing. Not a huge fan of Watkins and Godwin will cost too much and I'd rather spend those resources on either a qb or front 7 d-line playmaker.

All I’ll say on this is that if everyone wants to cheap out at WR, no QB is going to want to come here anyways. So you will be left with finding the QB in the draft. If that’s the case.... might as well spend money at WR

We are terrible at drafting WRs and CBs because the system developed by McDaniels/Caserio sucks and needs to be replaced. We develop undrafted WRs and CBs , likely not using the same crappy evaluation method focused on player height and 3cone time.

At some point this is on BB to recognize and fix. Totally agree on the point of do not draft CBs or WRs at all because our system is broken in evaluating these players.

I just gave you a list of 5 superstar players with cap numbers that total 53 mill. That is indisputable. And those are not first year cap hits.
Im sorry that you don’t understand how this works.
