I’d love that draft, but no way we are taking two TEs one year after we took two TEs.

Tried to draft on Fanspeak x 5 rounds and ended up with these.......

1) R1 - Devonta Smith - WR - Alabama
2) R2 - Mac Jones - QB- Alabama
3) R3 - Levi Onwuzurike - DL - Washington (Appreciate we dont have an R3 pick at the moment but not sure why I got this)
4) R4 - Baron Browning - LB - Ohio State
5)
6) R4 - Kadarius Toney - WR - Florida
7) R5 - Cary Angeline - TE - NC State (just took best player avail here 6'7" Tight end ....no idea how good he is ....lol)

Sorry guys I screwed up....... missing pick was Bobby Brown III - DL - Texas A & M

The only position the Pats double-dipped on in 2019 was cornerback.

If Belichick's board tells him to take another two TEs, that's what he'll do.

Toney a nice sleeper

I think Bobby Brown and the TE Angeline were bad picks but I did not have enough depth of knowledge to get better choices ....lol. However I thought Smith, Jones, Onwuzurike and Browning were probably OK picks

What about 2020?

My point is that Belichick doesn't care much about need, if at all, when it comes to drafting.

The Pats have needed young talent at TE for several years, but all they spent at the position from 2013 to 2019 were two late flyers in 2015 and 2018.

He very clearly cares about need. The man himself admitted that need factors in to their draft choices.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but the nearest I've heard from him is this:
New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick brushed off the idea that his team might select a player in the 2018 NFL Draft based upon needs.

“Well, again, the whole draft need thing is – I don’t really understand that,” he told reporters Friday. “You put a card up on the board. That doesn’t mean the guy is a good player. I think it’s important to acquire good players wherever they are. If you take a player at a position that you might so-called ‘need’ but he’s not good enough to fill that need, then it’s a wasted pick. So, I don’t understand the whole need thing. I understand player value, and that’s what we try to go by.”

And how on earth do you explain his drafting the last four years if need does factor into the equation?

I think Toney would be an excellent pick in the 4th round. I’d be THRILLED if we came away with Smith, Jones & Toney.

Entirely revamped O

Toney will at least be a productive WR, I just hope KC doesn't add him

Apologies if I have mentioned this previously (its an age thing) but is there any set formulae for taking particular positions in FA as opposed to drafting or vice versa. This of course could be as simple as best players available in any area, eg : would you always take a WR is FA as they have the experience in a NFL setting as opposed to a college rookie ?

I maybe wrong but has the FA route over draft been the BB/Pats way of doing things in the past ?.....will it change going forwards ?

i haven't much experience in this but i would guess that for example at the TE position we already have two rookies so i would welcome a vet here
of course there is no recipe..you see wr produce in year one instantly like jefferson but there are opposite examples as well, this counts probably for every position...i think it all depends for the opportunities in FA, for example if we don't sign a qb upgrade or number 1 wr we have to draft one, cant't afford to play any further seasons with no number 1 wr or vet TE,

P.S. i am a little drunk so apologise if it doesn't make sense i can't overread it

the question becomes will we take a receiver in the first round. Will one of the three really good receivers, smith, chase and waddle be available when we are on picking.

Smith wins at the line of scrimmage and is excellent at the catch point. The scary thing is he is only about 165 pounds.

chase may be under six feet tall, but is a solid 200 pounds and a playmaker and difference maker.

waddle is also shorter and lighter than desired, but incredibly sudden and nearly impossible to cover. Decent hands and tracks the ball well.

all three could be number 1 receivers in our offense.

Belichick doesn't have any set formula. In general, though, the Pats have mostly gone through the draft (including UDFAs) for QBs (Cam excepted), OL, and DB. Their successful WRs have mostly come through FA, and the other positions have been a mix.

FWIW, I saw a professional draft the other day that had the Pats taking Toney in round 2, and I feel like I've seen him in the first in some mocks.

As an aside, someone at DraftTek seems to have decided "Joe Thuney is going to walk, so the Pats need to grab a guard in round 1." Despite the fact that OG is not a priority need, at least twice now they've had the Pats taking Wyatt Davis with their first-round pick.

I don't think the Davis pick is a realistic option. I think it was bgc who mentioned if we pick o line early than it is an OT. Despite this Davis Pass protection needs some work so it would be too high for to pick a G. Esp with Davis playing RG for the Buckeyes and he might be better Suited there. He is a tough run blocker thougj but I would Adress other holes with the First pick. Wouldn't be mad about an OT if we really like one or trade down a bit depending on FA

According to Tankathon | 2021 NFL Draft Order Pats are drafting 14th with one week left.
If the Pats lose to the NYJ and the right teams win, NE can move up in the draft a few more slots.
For argument sakes, lets slot NE at #12
#12 gets NE in reasonable striking distance for the second tier of round 1 QBs after the initial flurry.
My gut tells me Bill would be willing to use 3rd rd picks to move up, not 2nds

And based only on the 2021 NFL Mock Draft | Tankathon that does not list a single DT getting drafted in round 1......

Pats go...
Rd 1 QB.........a rare opportunity for NE to be in position to get a stealth blue chipper
Rd 2 DT..........quality should still be on the board

2 major problems addressed
This is easy
