Time for a New Offensive Coordinator

Is Chad O'Shea, Bill O'Brien, or Charlie Weiss available? It is time for a new offensive coordinator for the following reasons:

1. Offense Inept 2 years in a Row. Even with Tom Brady this offense only scored 17.6 points per game the last 9 games in 2019, same as this year 20 points per game.
2. Lack of Talent Development and Missed Drafts. Very damaging bust pick of NKeal Harry (and Dobson, and every other WR drafted since 2012). Absolutely no development of tight ends which is a concerning pattern with McDaniels. No impact players since 2012 (since McDaniels returned).
3. Cam isn't the root issue. Seeing Stidham come in and only throw 4 for 11, shows this is an offensive issue all around.
4. Totally Exposed without Brady. McDaniels went to Denver and went 5-17 before getting fired (traded up using a 1st rounder for Tebow, traded for Maroney). Went to St Louis in 2011 and led the 32nd/worst offense in the league averaging only 12 points per game that season. McDaniels has done nothing without Tom Brady, this 2020 season included (so failed and exposed 3 separate times now without Tom Brady).

I think the team would benefit from a new offensive coordinator. O'Shea has completely revived Cleveland's offense this year plus developed Baker Mayfield, and Miami's last 8 games of 2019 was a top10 offense under O'Shea. Or Bill O'Brien who developed Edelman, Gronk, and Hernandez while here and then won 4 AFC South titles with the Texans. Heck even see if Charlie Weiss is available ? I wish we had stuck with Brian Daboll if we could go back in time. We need a new offensive coordinator.

Like everything else in a season review, I would expect that this concept of a new OC would have to be discussed at BB/Kraft level. However are we being too harsh with McDaniels in that he is entitled to be given a chance to show he can do this without Brady. (Not including his sojourns away from the team of course !).

That's fair. For me I've seen enough. I know how this will unfold. I don't need another year of ineptitude to know we need a new OC, don't need to waste another year of poor offensive talent evaluation, no development at TE/WR, and brain dead red zone play calls. Can we agree he's on the hot seat ?

Possible Problem: I fear that somehow Kraft or maybe even BB promised Josh the keys to the kingdom such that he rescinded his acceptance as Dolts HC. If so, are we stuck with him? Would huge Kraft severance $$$ fix this? Would Kraft agree to pay it?

I don’t think jmd had a good year either but I’m not sure there’s anything better out there. Like bb I’d think he deserves benefit of the doubt and another year or 2 to right the ship. It’s hard to jump to any conclusions with this roster.

He is when you consider that he had to have some input in these recent draft picks on offense.

Josh has been a miracle worker this year. He has gotten players in space somehow when we pose no threat whatsoever to opposing defenses. We run right at defenders when they know we're running, and we open holes. The opening drive trick play shows how well designed a McD offense can be. For me, he's the best OC in the entire league. If he were OC on the Bucs, they'd be the best team in football right now.

As for last year, having 4 hurt OL and your only receiver with broken ribs--well, Brady had to throw the ball away a zillion times after 1 second.

Contrast him with Bill O'Brien who bungled the 2011 Super Bowl. I'll never forgive O'Brien for his harebrained play calling. Brady rips off so many completions in a row, the Giants are gassed, they're reeling, they can't stop the pass, Patriots are in hurry-up, and the Giants can't substitute. So this "genius" gets cute and he dials up a Jumbo package, 1 WR, the Giants are finally able to get rested defenders on the field, he runs it up the gut, and we have a 2 yard loss. The Welker drop follows this sequence and the ref are overheard telling each otehr, "That would have been the ball game!" So thank you BO'B for that bit of idiocy.

In contrast, the O struggled against the Rams in '18. But when Josh found something that worked in the 4th quarter, he never took his foot off the Rams' neck so he could show them a different look just to display his own genius. He took what they were giving until we ended the game on that drive. These 2 drives will live on in New England Patriots history even though they had 2 very different results. Both of them could have ended Super Bowls. Only one of them did. And the reason is the OC.

Get this bum out of here. Although there are 10 other much better candidates for HC before McDaniels. BrianD in Buffalo, EricB in KC, etc. But I'd be thrilled if McDaniels left to go ruin some other franchise.

Plus obviously you get to live in southern California weather. A lot of their issues this year were due to coaching. It seems like his dream job. I do wonder how he would be replaced - O’Shea seems like the most obvious guy but BOB is out there still too, or maybe a guy already in house.

If the premise is that McDaniels is a terrible OC who deserves to be sent to the street as shamefully as possible, then no OC candidate in the NFL makes less sense than O'Shea. You should want real change, which is going to happen from going outside that coaching tree entirely and getting a new scheme and playbook. It would make infinitely more sense if McDaniels left for a HC job and O'Shea was brought in as a smooth continuation of what McDaniels was doing, but that sure doesn't seem like the premise here.

And please, spare me the exaggerations of O'Shea's role in Cleveland this year. He's the WR coach with a fancy title so they can pay him more. He doesn't call plays, and the offensive coordinator above him doesn't even call plays. The offensive coordinator is working significantly more with Mayfield than O'Shea is, and the "passing game coordinator" title specifically says that O'Shea isn't working with the running game, which was one of his glaring weaknesses as the Dolphins' OC.

Agree 150%. McDaniels is trash, why wouldn't LAC hire the OC from KC or Buffalo first. I say this while hoping McD doesn't stay on the Pats. If McDaniels goes to LAC that's the end of Herbert's promising career.
