His dead cap hit is a lot more team-friendly in 2021 than this year.

His heart really isnt in it.

If Brady plays in 2021 look for a reunion. AB will be in jail by then and the Bradys will have a vacancy at the guest house.

The argument for Edelman is Lynn Swann. Edelman is not a HOFer in my book but neither was Swann but he got pulled in by the wave of Steelers (along with Stallworth) making it and memorable Super Bowl moments. The 70's Steelers had an incredible 8 year run but it was not as good as what the Pats did yet they will end up with twice as many HOFers in comparison.

all this Bucs talk will kill me. There's no way. I wouldn't be surprised if BB keeps him in camp next year and they mutually decide if he retires or not. Having him help mentor the WR group, and generally be THE heart of the team would still be valuable IMO.

honestly not sure the BUcs would even want him. Scotty Miller is a far superior athletic version of Edelman, they have a lot of young and talented weapons on offense down in Tampa

Comparing Edelman to Jerry Rice, in any context, is insanity.

If Edelman's career is in fact over, he's definitely not getting into the HOF... the real HOF... not the fake one that will include Matthew Slater one day.

Swann is in with a resume like Edelman’s. Big playoff performer. I wouldn’t put money on Edelman getting in but it’s not that crazy of a thought. Precedent matters.

In the modern game, you win with players like Edelman (low cost, low draft pick / UDFA) who are not lighting the world on fire, but deliver the key plays at key times. He never cost the Patriots as much as a Julio Jones or Megatron. But he produced and was a winner.

Here’s to finding several more Edelman types, as various positions, to reset NE going forward !

Edelman doesn't have the regular season resume of a HOF receiver. I think Swan is a decent comp as he got in the HOF mostly because of his postseason numbers but he also is a slightly more accomplished receiver overall.

I think Wes Welker is the Patriots best slot receiver of all time. Probably Brady's all time favorite receiver. His regular season resume is close to HOF worthy. He'd probably get in if he had won a Super Bowl. Letting Welker sign with Denver is an underrated mistake on Belichick's part. Welker was the final peice of Manning's historic 2013 season to go along with Thomas (WR), Decker and Thomas (TE).

Amendola did not work out in NE as expected but that gets glossed over because he was such a vital contributor in the postseasons. The emergence of Edelman turned out to be the replacement of Welker but even still you nearly had to combine the production of Edelman and Amendola to equal what Welker had brought to the offense.

Unfortunately I think Welker is remembered more for his drop in Super Bowl 46 than anything else.

Scotty Miller is strictly a vertical player. Bucs sorely need a underneath player, someone to exploit the flat.

Edelman's days as a vertical threat are over but he could still be a chain mover in the short game. Someone like him would be quite valuable in forcing defenses to cover the entire field instead of cheating deep.

Troy Brown is still #2 for me...Criminally under-used by Parcells and to a somewhat lesser extent by Petey.

Edelman was ready to take over in 2013 and due to age and salary consideration moving on from Welker made sense. Edelman missed too much playing time due to injuries to get serious HOF consideration but in his 3 Super Bowl seasons he had 73 catches and 1,011 yards in 9 games played plus an MVP award. He was incredibly clutch in the postseason with must have catches in both 2014 and 2016 Super Bowls and made huge catch after catch in the AFCCG against the Chiefs.

I don’t know why NE wouldn’t keep him. He may not come all the way back from the injury at his age but even 70% of Jules is at least WR3 quality. He knows how to find the soft spots even if he won’t juke guys as often. If he retires he should be the Wide Receivers Coach immediately... sorry Lombardi Jr.

Yeah the only reason I could see them moving on (assuming he doesn’t retire) would be if they wanted to put that money towards another WR like Robinson. Cutting him just to save money without replacing his talent is silly IMO
