OT: Official 2020 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

Brady on the Pats missing the playoffs. Learned well from his former HC.

“As far as the Patriots, they have their own thing going,” he said during his postgame conference call with the Tampa Bay media. “I’ve really been focused on how my play needs to be at quarterback, the execution I need, and they’re not really an opponent of mine. Obviously, I have a lot of friends there, a lot of great relationships, but they’ve been focused on what they need to do and I’ve been trying to focus on what my job is.”
Please. Brady got that decorum and respect from his Dad. Bill is petty and vindictive and often passive aggressive like when he talked about Kittle calling him one of the best TEs to ever play and then listed off a bunch of TEs including Bavaro and never mentioned Gronk. Bill is often a little man who never lets go of a grudge.

Bill definitely is vindictive but I didn’t really read that into his comments about Kittle. He'd have no reason to have a grudge against Gronk anyway,

I know. What a juxtaposition. Pats lose horribly with Newton who can't throw and Brady leads a three score comeback in the third. Bill looks like an absolute clown.
Imagine calling the head coach of a team that has won a Super Bowl in 30%+ of their seasons over a 20 year span, "an absolute clown".

Man, you're really on a roll today.

You call yourself a Pats' fan, right? Hard to believe it.

I agree with what you’re saying here.

I fear many fans have no idea how hard it is to win in this league.

He has been this season with sticking with Cam.

Yeah. We need an overhaul and new ways to looks things in terms of team building. It is hard to believe this team had cap issues this year AND is so devoid of talent. Normally when a team is in cap hell, it has talent that is overpaid. We have nothing.
Why is that "hard to believe"? That a team up against the cap will struggle to acquire talent - that's difficult to understand?

Have you taken the time to familiarize yourself with why they have cap issues? Have you looked into the dead money they have due to unfortunate circumstances beyond their control? AHern, Brown, and Brady taking a dead-money deal that he knew he was going to unload on the team after the season?

The drafting has been poor but the cap issue is a conglomeration of fluky, unlucky circumstances.

I'll trust the judgment of the coach who's won a Super Bowl in 30%+ of his seasons over a 20 year span over the word of a messageboard goer.

Man, throw me some counterfactual realities, life has been pretty rough on our own.

What makes you so sure Stid would fare better than Cam this year?

Drafting has been horrible for several years. We also have aging players on high end contracts. Some of it is bad luck, but most is just bad team building. To have no succession plan at QB at all with Brady playing until age 42 is really hard to believe for someone like Bill.

Horrible is a strong word. They haven't hit on enough players but I'm not sure that makes the drafting "horrible". Bad team building ... yeah, I don't think so. You seem to be chalking up their roster issues this year to Belichick and nothing/no one else. A fair, objective person, would not all the variables present. COVID, opt-outs, dead money/cap issues. And yes, to an extent, the drafting.

What would your succession plan at QB have been? Who would you have drafted, when, and where? Which FA would you have targeted? You can't just whip up a succession plan out of thin air, especially during a completely abnormal, wacky season, missing core players and without any cap space.

Look, I get your allegiance is to Brady before the Patriots or Belichick. I don't know any sane Patriots' fan that would complain about Belichick's performance to date over the last 20 years. Has he made mistakes? Yes. So has every other coach/GM in the history of the game, even the most successful ones.

If you want to use this one season as your barometer and declare Belichick is useless (despite the past 20 years of evidence), go ahead. But most Patriots' fan I know would not be tossing Belichick to the curb based on 14 games in a vacuum. Hell, even an objective observer with no dog in the fight would note that 14 games is not enough time to reach any conclusions about the post-Brady era ... and they'd almost certainly acknowledge the unfortunate circumstances surrounding this season.

The drafting has been poor at times, but beyond that, I'm not sure what there really is to complain about.

I am only talking about this season which is the result of his poor team building over the last several seasons and the mismanagement of the QB position being the most glaring. It makes it hard to feel a ton of optimism for next year with such uncertainty at the QB.

Thuney has nowhere to go. Teams will be jettisoning their best players with big contracts. No one is signing guards for $14m per next year. Not happening.

I agree with you about the QB but something tells me Belichick has a plan for that.
Carson Wentz?

Saints lost. They better start looking behind their shoulders cause the almost impossible of losing the division is still a possibility.

Ideally we’ll get a bridge QB better than Newton and a better prospect than Stidham.

Bill should get the best available QB - period. Not get cute and try to prove he’s the smartest guy in the room and think he can coach up some 4th or 5th round scrub who wouldn’t make any other roster to stardom. That is my main issue with Bill. It’s that attitude that made Spygate happen.

Do it right and don’t screw around this time.

Finding a good QB is not easy. Look at the Broncos post Manning. I am cautiously optimistic that BB can solve the problem but it will be a challenge.

I’m amazed the Patriots with Stidham and Hoyer were competitive with the Chiefs in their game.

I hear this type of narrative all the time and I honestly do not understand it. Like every GM BB makes mistakes but I have always believed he is trying to help the team win vs trying to prove some point. When a move works like picking Mankins or Vollmer it's just a good pick but when it fails he is trying to "look smart" Don't buy it.

You're dealing with Brady fanboys here. Most of them, it would seem, were born after 1990 and don't know anything about Patriots football other than Brady. So when things don't go their way they get bitter and start blaming Bill. And it's the same morons too, every time.

They have not faired well against the more talented teams( Saints, Chiefs, Rams) and when they have to go on the road in the playoffs, I'd expect their defense and coaching to let them down.
sounds like you want them to lose. They have Tom Brady, he is the most clutch athlete in history. He will lead them to revenge victories in the playoffs

Rams...LOL they lost to the jets!
