Idle thoughts - the 2-1 edition

BTW- THRILLED to see Sony get some looks in the passing game. Back in college it was thought he had good hands.....and I think it was Sony who had that great blitz pick up in the 2nd half.

Hilarious reading posts here about how bad Sony is and Gronk (some player elsewhere) and both had days at sharp odds with their detractors. Sony will be a better threat with good blitz pickup AND pass catching. Ds will no longer be able to say "Sony's in so it's a run"

6. The OL - Lots of pluses as far as I was concerned. Thuney was great given he only had a week to prepare. I honestly thought Frodholt would have gotten the start, but they clearly thought Onwenu was up to the task at LG. I mean who would have thought when they pick some no name G from Michigan in the 6th round he'd be starting in the 3rd game of the season AND have a significant number of snaps in the first 2. On one hand you can say, what a find. On the other hand, you have to wonder about Frodholt that this kid just went right by him on the depth chart.

Getting worried about Frodholt's lack of progress.

The worst thing I can think of that can happen to a defense is to give up a TD in less than 35 seconds at the end of the half. That was horrible. The only other time I think they ever did that was in the 2014 Superbowl when they allowed Seattle to go right down the field for a TD after the Pats scored late in the 2nd My other complaint about the defense was they screwed up their substitutions 3 times and had to use their last TO just 2 minutes into the 4th quarter.

Since I too am an old coot I've forgotten the other game last couple years where we gave up a TD well inside last 2 minutes of the half. Totally unexpected in a BB coached team but it happens.

Winnovich is getting really good push on his pass rushes. What he needs to do is to start to get separation from the blocker once he gets to the QB. Too often he walked the blocker right by the QB and had trouble disengaging from his push. But clearly he has shown improvement in his pass rush.

Also good to see that Derrick Rivers had a QB hit. Yes

Wino does extend his rush past the QB when he should break it off. Coaches will fix that. He's really having a good year 2.

a. I am SOOOOO over Jim Nance and his "hot take" about the tuck play. The ONLY reason it became such a hot button issue is because the 2 announcers on that day had NO clue about the rule. I know I didn't and thought the game was over. I even shut the TV off and got on the computer to congratulate a Raider fan I conversed with over at the old KFFL site. It was only because they had no clue as to what the rule was about that the "controversy" even started. If they had had a ref in the booth like they do now, it wouldn't have been such a big deal because he would have been able to explain WHY it wasn't a fumble and the football world would have moved on.

Instead this Nance mook brings it up like it happened yesterday, not 20 years ago, and might as well have had his Raider's cap on when he said it. The Pats got screwed FAR worse back in 78 in that playoff game where the Raiders got call after call after call. Forget the Ben Dreith call, there were some far worse calls in that 4th quarter. Oackland fans have nothing to complain about after that robbery.
Can't stand Nance. His bias & ignorance is huge. Game 2 of 2001 Pats strip sack Vinnie T and recover the ball...until refs review & invoke the tuck Rule. It was called then and several other times that season. It was not until several seasons later that it was revised/abolished.

I was in a good place until you reminded me of the Dreith call. Another bad call that game was Russ Francis having both biceps grabbed from behind so that the 1st down pass bounced off his chest. Egregious.

Excellent post Ken. Like an Old QB you still have the arm for the downfield cross field post. My comments above in Bold Italic.

We were lucky to draft and develop Edelman and Gronk from 2009-2011. Mickey-D has never known what to do with tight ends. He inherited Gronk who is a HOF talent so had to use him. Before 2008 did nothing with Watson. Didn't develop any TEs in Denver or St Louis. Hasn't developed any TEs in New England either ever since.

It's hilarious that you blame McDaniels for not "developing" Watson when McDaniels was the QB Coach from 2004 to 2006. In 2006, McDaniels became the OC. 2006 just happened to be his 3rd best as a TE receiving wise in his career. 2007 slid back but that was because of the Moss/Welker passing connection.

McDaniels was in Denver for 18 months.. He drafted 1 TE. Richard Quinn.. Do you honestly believe that it only takes 18 months to "develop" a player?
Saying that he didn't develop a TE in St. Louis is also laughable considering he didn't even spend a full season there.

Who has more input in the development of a player? The POSITION coach who works with the player on a daily basis or the Coordinator who is juggling numerous working parts and doesn't spend every moment with said player?

If you're going to say that McDaniels "inherited" Gronk, then you have to say the same about Watson because McDaniels wasn't Watson's position coach prior to becoming the OC.

How many TEs have the Pats drafted since Gronk/Hernandez?

2011 - Lee Smith - 6th round
2016 - AJ Derby - 6th Round
2018 - Ryan Izzo - 7th round
2020 - Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene - 3rd round.

So, not too many chances for him to "develop" a TE. However, Izzo seems to be developing into a good 3rd TE option based on what I'm seeing heading into his 2nd full season.

Funny the best draft pick contributing now is Michael Onwenu. A 6th round pick.

Where are the rest?

Uche, Dugger, Jennings, Asiasi, Keene?

With NFL parity, all you need is one good draft to contend. We have several draft picks playing this year. I’m not saying they’re all playing well, but we’re getting contributions. Coupled with above average coaching and deep talent at several positions, we’re in as good a spot as anyone in the league. All three games have been entertaining.

I don't have All 22 or the keenest defensive eye, but it's looked to me like Dugger is playing regularly and playing well. Uche, Jennings, and Keene banged up. Asiasi has been seeing some snaps and reportedly blocking well. Really hoping he and/or Keene can develop into legit receiving options by midseason.

Asiasi is getting playing time. He’s only blocking now. If he starts catching passes later in the season, he could be a nice secret weapon.

Lets see what Brady says about how hard it is to be a tight end in the NE offense

Ok then I think we have this cleared up. I think Asiasi is coming along fine. He went from 10 snaps in each of the first two games to 29 snaps yesterday. He will have his chance to contribute as the season goes on.

I just think Cam is a much more enjoyable QB to watch this year. The offense is more unpredictable - and it’s better too at least compared to last year.

Agreed. Cam is what we needed as a fanbase and what the team has needed to reinvent itself.

2-1 feels great. I remember thinking 2-2 would be succesfull looking at the first 4 games. Now We’re all thinking we could of been 3-0 but came up short 1 yard of doing that. It’s a hefty challenge to play KC. But I got to admit, BB, Cam and this football team are starting to make believers out of me. They’ve displayed different looks to beat different styles of teams and it’s a good sign because it is way early with a lot more time to get creative and expand. Pretty stoked for this weeks matchup.

Anyone else feel the nervous excitement and anticipation for football? Don’t get me wrong, Brady was one of if not the best things to happen to the Patriots ever. But 95% of the time going into a game, the expectation was a win. It was simply awesome and we were so spoiled to be so confident as fans to feel that way. Sure we had the matchups that were intense. But as a whole confident is the word that comes to mind for me anyway.

Everything just seems new and fun. I don’t mean that as the common slight via jackass from Philly or Bradys supposed comments from Tampa Bay. It’s just different and watching the state of the franchise in transition from the Goat to something else has been kind of cool to watch.

For sure. It's fun to watch! Much more enjoyable than last year was that's for sure.

Gruden is a crybaby. It was 19 years ago that a legit call was made against his team and he's still whining about it. That's why he's a loser and always will be. On the other hand, Bill doesn't mention calls right after a game, let alone decades later.

I think the short week and travel may have been a factor in the way the Pats manhandled the Raiduh defense with 250 yards rushing.

There was an old saying roaming around football way back when which claimed that three things can happen when you pass the ball and two of them are bad. It's great to see the running game's return.

ANd hopefully we can do the same thing to the Chiefs, who are on a short week...

Plus they're playing a team that can expose vulnerabilities in their defense to our benefit. Looking forward to the game tonight.

Wow Cowherd sure changed his tune about us in the last couple of weeks. All before the season he kept saying how horrible we were and no better than 5-11 and now...

Cowherd's take is not a good one at all. Seattle and GB should be in the first tier. They are just as good as KC and Baltimore. Then you should add the Steelers, Bucs, and Pats to the 2nd tier. The Bucs have beaten Carolina and Denver, so I'm not sold on them yet as tier 1 contenders. Meanwhile, you can't count out New Orleans who've lost two straight without Michael Thomas. If he played last night, the saints probably win.

don’t be impatient.

Uche and Keene have been hurt. Uche is on IR. Asiasi is getting on the field just being asked to block not catch so far. Dugger is on the field and making plays. Yesterday he was part of shutting down Waller. Also had ar least one or two other good hits that I noticed. His star is rising.

Maybe Hightower can be talked into opting back in.
Is that even possible? I thought the "opt out" was an irrevocable decision. I'm hoping I'm wrong
