Dolphins vs Pats Week 1 - Fitz to start for MIA

Nobody knows what the Pats offense is going to look like. Everyone is going to double Edelman, it all depends on what the running game looks like and if they are going to have Cam on designed runs, or just when he has to scramble. I was watching reruns of the redzone all weekend and it is amazing how many plays Brady just gave up on and threw the ball away before he would get hit.

It will be interesting to see what the Pats offense will look like, I do think they can handle Miami.

Flores pulled Chan Gainley out of retirement as the Dolphins' Offensive Coordinator. Gailey has been out of football for a few years, and is 67/68 years old. Curious hire. His last stint with the NYJ did not go well (1st year 10th ranked offense, 2nd year 24th ranked offense followed by retirement).

I don't think any D will simply be able to double Jules automatically or consistently because teams will be forced to play more zone because of Cam's threat to run... theoretically.

Dolphins prediction: 7-9
With so many new and often young faces, the Dolphins suffered from the abbreviated offseason due to the coronavirus pandemic. Don’t see a quantum leap coming but defense will keep them in games this year.

Dolphins prediction: 7-9
In a normal season Steve Ross’ $243 million investment into his roster would pay off more because the Dolphins would have had an offseason to get adjusted to the new offense and changes to the defense. But COVID-19 ensures that this team will get off to a slow start like last season before eventually picking up steam and finishing strong.

Dolphins prediction: 6-10
Sure, Brian Flores and Chris Grier drafted quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. But the major emphasis during the rebuild was retooling the Dolphins defense, which should keep Miami in contention this season. However, a lack of playmakers beyond DeVante Parker, Preston Williams and Mike Gesicki and a young offensive line will be reasons why the Dolphins offense struggles with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starting quarterback.

Dolphins prediction: 8-8
It might be optimistic when you factor in the tough schedule, but a lot of Brian Flores’ plan could click into place with a little time and some luck. There were significant free-agent pickups, some talented rookies added, and who knows? Maybe at some point in the season when Ryan Fitzpatrick stumbles, we get rookie Tua Tagovailoa starting. This has to be a .500 team this year, right? Right?

Dolphins prediction: 7-9
While the Dolphins will be greatly improved after adding several key free agents to their overhauled defense, issues remain on offense. Three rookies could start on the offensive line and the team is thin at receiver. Ryan Fitzpatrick starts at quarterback, while Tua Tagovailoa settles in. A playoff spot is not out of the question with the Patriots’ reign seemingly over.

Dolphins prediction: 5-11
This Dolphins team has a much better talent base than last season’s incarnation. But a much more difficult schedule and a ton of travel face Miami in 2020. Further, the likelihood that nearly-38-year-old quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick — the single player who kept the Dolphins from selecting first in April’s draft — starts all the games is anything but a given.

Karras, who left the New England Patriots to sign a one-year, $3 million deal to join the Dolphins as a free agent, was signed to serve as Daniel Kilgore’s replacement on an offensive line that produced a franchise-low 1,156 rushing yards, and a league-high 58 sacks in 2019.
He’s one of eight newcomers — two free-agent additions and six rookies — the Dolphins hope will bolster the overhauled unit. Karras already has taken on a leadership role after building a gym inside the garage of his new South Florida home, hosting weekly weight-lifting sessions for the Dolphins players in town.
"I am lucky. I know a lot of guys on this team already, which has been great. A lot of guys are trickling down as it kind of ramps up toward the season and, I think, it’s going to be a really, really productive summer,” Karras said. "I’ve got a rack and a bench. Just when all the coronavirus stuff happened, I didn’t have anywhere to work out, so we kind of put together a weight room and got it going. It’s been good, really good, and I just like to start relationships.”
The Karras-led workouts have been going on for nine weeks. According to Karras, the biggest benefit has been the bonding element, which is a major part of building chemistry for a team — and critical for an offensive line.

The Miami Dolphins added quarterback Tua Tagovailoa among 11 new rookies, spent more than $140 million in guaranteed money to 11 free agents and sprinkled in even more talent to their roster along the way this offseason.
Still, national expectations appear largely bullish for coach Brian Flores and his Dolphins team during the 2020 season.
In ESPN’s annual Football Power Index (FPI) rankings released this week, the Dolphins are projected to be one of the worst teams in the league.
Flores and his coaching staff, which has 10 new coaches, must work efficiently to acclimate their influx of new talent while playing the third-most difficult schedule in the NFL.
Adding players like Tagovailoa, the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback Byron Jones, a group of edge rushers like Kyle Van Noy, Shaq Lawson and Emmanuel Ogbah, two talented running backs in Matt Breida and Jordan Howard, first-round left tackle Austin Jackson and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene and several other new additions should help.
Still, ESPN gives the Dolphins the worst chance to win the AFC East compared to their divisional counterparts.

When I saw the headline I thought Flores was pulling a Rex Ryan, naming former opponents captains for that one game. Turns out the three are team captains for the full season.

When the Miami Dolphins announced their team captains on Monday, there was a noticeable theme. Out of the eight players nominated, three of them were on the Patriots last year with linebacker Kyle Van Noy, linebacker Elandon Roberts and center Ted Karras.
“It says a lot about those three,” Flores said on Wednesday. “We also have five other guys who were named captain. We had a handful of other guys who also had some votes for captain. I don’t want to put too much on those three guys. They were three of lets call it 10 or 11 guys who got votes. They’ve come in, they’ve worked hard. They’ve competed. Obviously, there’s been some familiarity with the system defensively, but Ted came in and learned a new system offensively pretty quickly.”
On defense, this year’s Dolphins team could start up to four players with Patriots ties – Van Noy, Roberts, Kamu Grugier-Hill and Eric Rowe. Backup cornerback Jamal Perry and linebacker Calvin Munson were also previously on the Patriots practice squad.

Without any preseason games, no one knows how the Patriots will look until that 1 p.m. kickoff.
“We’ve watched a lot of film on (Newton),” Flores told the New England media on Wednesday. “But at the end of the day it comes back to when you haven’t seen a team play a game or a preseason, we continually talk about quarterback, but what are we going to see from an o-line standpoint? What are we going to see at the receiver position? What are we going to see in the kicking game? What are we going to see defensively? There’s a lot of unknowns.”

I’m not a fan of this match up. I think the Dolphins can run on us and neutralize a lot of the secondary and take pressure off Fitz. Fitz is a coin flip. So imo it really comes down to whether Cam can make something out of the offense.

The Dolphins still aren’t a good team, but the way last year ended this could be a very good measuring stick game

They had a rare off game it happens. Too bad Tompa Boy couldn’t pick them up for once that year - instead he threw his first of two season killing pick 6’s that very same game.

Lemme guess- that wasn’t his fault either. Right.
It's true that the Pick-6 (to Eric feckin Rowe of all people) effectively ended our season...But it's also true that Brady brought them to a point that if the Boogermen could made one feckin stop somewhere during the final drive - particularly Gilmore & Jonny Jones, who were both feckin Horrible that day - the Pats still win the game & the #2 seed...

Would have rather seen Rowe do that in SBLII than to Brady

I bought into the "Boogeymen" hype even though they didn't play anyone good until the Ravens - and promptly got exposed. Hopefully next time they zip it with the nicknames until they earn them on the field.
