thank you for the clarification. If folks are convinced that team is WORSE than a 6-9 win team, then I believe that their analysis is a bit hysterical and will likely change as we come closer to the season.

There's just a lot of black and white thinking happening right now along the lines of believing the only difference between this team being competitive at the highest level and being a bottom feeder was Tom Brady. "Poor drafting" etc being parroted by some of our most famous posters. The reality is that school of thought is partially true: the offense does appear to have been mismanaged into the ground. Doesn't mean the whole team is a loss though.

Could you please link to the posts that have seriously claimed that every single move in recent years has been a mistake, or that the entire team is a complete loss?

Lets look at UFA and trade record for Pats past couple of years (see below). Based on this its almost a sure thing 2/3rds of their UFA signings thus far in 2020 will suck and not make the team or be cut early on...including Mr. Beau Allen.

Mike Pennell
Maurice Harris

Jared Veldheer
Lance Kendricks
JJ Dielman
Cameron Meredith
Albert Huggins
Scooby Wright
Mike Nugent
Kia Forbath

Eric Tomlinson

So-So Meh (6):

Clearly you have captain stone on ignore?

I suspect that Bill is happy he signed all the "meh" players you listed. Newhouse was our starting LT for half the season, when we didn't lose a game. That can't be a terrible pick (maybe lucky one). Pennell isn't an awful signing. I think that we shouldn't have cut him. The addition of Pennell would have helped later in the season.

HOWEVER, your point is reasonable. We fail on over half of our free agents. I think that this a reasonable expectation, especially given how little we pay the majority of free agents. On average, if we need help at a position and expect to fix the need with a free agent, then we should acquire two or three at the position. That is the point of a 90 man roster and of camp competition.

So, I'm fine with all the safety/STers. And yes, I would like to see much competition at DT and ILB.

Some of your "misses" ended up on season-ending IR with injuries, though... Some looked good but then got hurt (i.e. Jeremy Hill). Others were very low-cost fliers on injured guys who might help but ultimately never got healthy and thus nothing was really lost except a tiny bit of cash (i.e. Cameron Meredith). Also, not all FA is created equal - lumping in expensive players who leave a lump of dead money in their absence alongside the low-risk fliers like I mentioned before is misleading. I don't think this list totally makes sense.

Appreciate the effort...a couple of thoughts:

Matty LaGlasse should be placed from the Meh to the Misses column, as well as Terry Brooks from the Hits (!?!)...both of them are disgraces to the uniform.

Shilique Calhoun belongs in the Meh column; he was the king of whiffed sacks last season...I was actually surprised that he was re-signed.

Don't know about AB in the Hits column...he probably deserves one all his own...
