How is it possible for this country to see 1000 deaths per DAY when no other country has experienced that, including China and Iran? I can see the situation worse in Iran since they don't have the medical equipment and facilities like we do here, but I can't see it ever getting that bad here. 80% of those infected in the US have recovered.

You really don’t know that. Even the experts can’t predict that, so for you to do that is pretty damn irresponsible, in my opinion. I work for a federal contractor that provides for the military. I’m not isolating myself and won’t be for the foreseeable future. You can’t just shut down the whole country. It’s not feasible at this point. It’s all well and dandy because I’m sure you’re working from home, but a lot of us cannot.

Have you ever screamed at the TV, "throw it..... he's open"? This country has been screaming for testing.

We need to know who has it and who they've been in contact with.

Yep...they just estimated that 52% of Californians will get it. About 25M people. And considering the hospital situation, expect the death rate closer to 4%. A million deaths in CA.

It will be like Italy but so much worse...because it will actually be like 6-7 Italys based on the population, and due to the geographic spread of the US, the government will be able to do very little for any given city. I think the US will get it worse than anywhere in the world.

I still dont really know what to expect. I hope most of us self isolated soon enough to make a difference. I am holding out hope. However, I am probably on the optimistic side.

I'm not a hater but here's something to think about. China might have not been forthcoming but everyone around the world found out at the same time. South Korea and Taiwan were on top of it, got to work, and it shows. We might have delayed it with travel ban (I kind of doubt it actually) ...who knows but for the reason we weren't ready, I'm irritated. We're the Fking United States. As a the late Elihja Cummings said "We're better than this". Let's not kid ourselves...this wasn't our finest moment.

How, exactly, is speculating on a worst case scenario irresponsible?

Planning for the worst case scenario is my primary approach to everything in life. Don't fixate on positive thinking, fixate on and plan for the negative. That way, at least, you are not caught unawares and most of the time things will turn out much better than that.

It's a projection. A lot of projections have the numbers high. They're based on the numbers in other countries, mathematics, computer simulations, etc.

The projections are made so that the government and people can try to prepare for these things to happen and try to get as accurate a read as possible. Sure, sometimes it's a range that's given, but you can still estimate.

Otherwise, what are we to do? Just throw our hands up, say that no one can possibly predict anything, and have no expectations or plans?

I'm not being irresponsible. Those numbers are going to happen and possibly even if we shut down for two weeks.

I'm not working from home. I work in manufacturing. I'm trying to keep everyone at work safe. We have purell stations and wipes all over the building. I preach social distancing. We have a lot of people who are 60+. We have a lot of people who work paycheck to paycheck.

This virus is twice as contagious as the flu and twenty to thirty times more lethal. It was allowed to roam free for at least a month but possibly longer.

All the numbers we are seeing are from those that show strong enough symptoms to be tested. Which means another possible 80% of those infected are running around spreading it further.

Unlike the flu you can spread it without showing any signs of illness.

So no I'm not being irresponsible.

Entire countries are shutting themselves down for a reason.

I mean, I didn't mind Trump's travel ban and never spoke out against it. But it's just frustrating watching the Trump cult play silly games to protect their dear leader from the merest of criticism.

Do you guys have some sort of global alert system that lets you know to rush to your keyboards when someone says anything even remotely critical of the guy?
