My bad, the cap number increased to 7 million. By "easily," if you mean releasing and/or trading players, then I agree. I still don't think its enough to field a super bowl caliber team. Maybe a wildcard team at best. If stidham turns out to be anything like people are saying, then maybe 2021 or beyond we can be thinking super bowl.

It's not a playoff team. People are forgetting how bad this team was for the last 1/3 of the season. Now take a away qb, 2 lb, starting dt and a banged up Edelman another year older. Given the Pats schedule next season, this team is top 8 in the draft, not a playoff contender.

The Pats were so far ahead of teams other than the Chiefs in the AFC. If they have a decent QB and upgrade the weapons on offense they'll still be AFC contenders. If anyone can create a new edge rusher or outside linebacker its Belichick.

Far ahead? Did you watch the last 1/3 of the season. The Pats were very bad.

Fielding a competitive team is one thing, fielding a super bowl contending team is another. What the hell are you going to do with $3 million in cap space? At the end of the day the Pats are a business. If sacrificing short term success for long term sustainability at the top means having a subpar 2020, so be it. It's fantasy notion to think NE will win the SB next year.

You are still doing it. Focus on winning one game. This spoiled notion that you a team has to be a clear superbowl competitor is nonsense.

You're not getting my point

I meant with restructures. Thuney for a example is on the tag and if we get a long term deal done we would save a lot in year 1.
Gilmore and Hightower have big numbers that could pretty easily be reduced.
That could get you the 10+ I mentioned without a cut or trade.
And yes there probably will be some cuts and trades.

I agree that the Pats were by no means "far ahead" of all but the Chiefs in the AFC, but the Pats were not "very bad" either. They were thoroughly average (which to us is very bad, but may soon be very good).

Ebner has such a cool story. Bet even on draft day, he didn’t think he’d have any NFL career, let alone a long one with multiple superbowls. I loved having him on the roster.

Having said that, it’s beginning to look like we will be using most of these draft picks and special teams are an important way for young guys to stick on the roster and have time to develop. Guess this opens a spot for one of them.

Patfans.com roster projections are going to suffer: Ebner is always the guy they cut. Who they gonna cut now?

Abandon ship! Abandon ship!

They need another Ventrone

As usual, BB values his compensation picks. I suspect he will stay away from UFA until June 1st after which they do not count against the compensation pick formula
He will look at released players or untenderedplayers now. The draft is still 4.5 weeks away. I think they will use the next few weeks to clear more cap space.

For Pats fans this is the a painful time of year as we watch our team literally get looted by ex assistant coaches and the team's brain trust gives the appearance that they are happy to get looted.

To me other than Brady the most painful losses are Harmon and Ebner.
Van Noyes is chasing $ and did not want to play here anymore. Karas is mediocre at best. Roberts is mediocre at best. Collins also looking for big $ ad even though at time he looked all world, his play was inconsistent at end of year.

You can only get 4 comp picks and they've lost 7 FAs so far (and signed 2).

There is a decent chance that will sign both Ebron and Wolfe over the next 48 hrs. There is also a decent chance that they won’t. I choose to remain hopeful that the former will happen.

I’ll note that it seems reasonably clear the Pats are going through a rebuild - and like the last time (2009-2011) they’re trying to put competitive teams out there until they have their longer term solutions in place.

I think they’re trying to stockpile draft picks again. During that last rebuild, they made 12 draft picks in 2009 and 12 picks in 2010, as opposed to other years where they cashed in their chips by trading up or for players (2007, 2012, 2017). They’ve got 12 picks this year. They already had 9 picks in 2021 because of trades, and now are on pace for 13 with the comp picks.

After the 8-0 start they might have been the worst team in the East.

Also: No, our only rugger!

They can't leave fast enough. Who will be left when the smoke clears? I will have to learn an entire new roster...

Surprise draft pick in the first place (should've been signed as a UDFA really) who after his first couple of training camps I thought had a possible future as a backup SS...never materialized... Time now to move ahead with some young blood who can play an acceptable level of both STs and backup SS...John Simon should be able to handle Punt Protector duties...

Even with the team bringing back his brother, the Patriots had to overpay Devin in order to keep him.

So many players are gone, do we even have a 54 man roster anymore ??
When is this mass exodus going to stop ?
