$30m for Brady as per Rap

The New England Patriots enter a pivotal offseason. Coming off an uncharacteristically early playoff exit, they have to deal with Tom Brady’s impending free agency.

Over the weekend, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Patriots are willing to pay $30 million a year to bring the 42-year-old Brady back. Rapoport also indicated that Brady wants New England’s assurance that they will upgrade his offensive weapons before he potentially re-signs with them. The Patriots’ lack of dynamic offensive talent proved costly throughout the 2019 season.

Hear that Bill? Open that wallet and sign top-tier WRs and TEs!! NO MORE JAGS!!
:p

Pats are a business first. How fast will tickets sellout without Brady? Then you got to think about merchandise sales. Ratings. The Pats lease expires in 2026 at Gillette Stadium.

They will make money. No doubt. But it may be tough to get newer fans without Brady.

You might be right, but acting like you know for sure is the actual hilarious thing.

It's also just simple math leading some of us to the opposite conclusion. There's cap space for Brady and not much else. You can only spread cap hits if it's a longer term deal, and the longer the deal is, the less I like it for the team. Therefore, if we keep Brady, it is highly likely we don't have much cap space to work with.

But yeah, you totally know what's going to happen.

Of course I don’t know. Probably not even Brady/Belichick know for sure what’s going to happen right now.

What’s most likely though based on Brady’s history, and his obsession with winning? Completely illogical to think he’s going to flip the script and suddenly say eff it when he knows he needs help now more than ever.

Even if that's a true statement, so what? Kraft owns both the team and the stadium. It's not like team could get evicted in 2026. He'll just write a new lease to himself.

Gotta figure that any push to bring Brown back, whether by Brady, by BB, or by both, died with the season.

If Brady wants an elite, proven talent...there isn't much out there available. Current expected FAs...Manny Sanders (still good, but still "elite"?), AJ Green (who really doesn't look to me like a fit here), Amendola (solid, not elite).

OBJ possible in trade?

And there's Brown, if cleared to play...needing a prove it and in love with Tom Brady.

What makes you think AJ Green wouldn’t be a fit here? He’s a polished route runner and al all-world freak athlete, even if his best days are behind him.

???

1) The team sold out before Brady came. In fact, the patriots have sold out every game since Kraft bought the team.

2) Kraft owns the stadium.

Clearly he wouldn't be able to grasp the system like studs such as Meyers, Harry and Dorsett do.

how many QB's won SB's while getting top 5 money?

I don't know exactly. I know he's a great WR, or was.

But...he's 31 and hasn't played a down in more than a year, and when I watch him, he seems like the guy who makes contested catches 15+ yards downfield, which doesn't seem to me to be the focus of Tom Brady targeting techniques.

I've just never seen the guy as a fit in the Pats' system and quirks. Manny Sanders, yes, Green? I don't know.

This all sounds fine and good but wouldn’t these improved weapons be tied to Brady taking a team friendly deal? Asking for top of the market qb money will make it harder to get this added pieces for the offense.

Whether or not you believe this logic is pretty much the dividing line in this thread. I agree with you but some don't. The usual counterargument is "but Brady always takes under market value!!!", which is false.

It makes no sense to bring Brady back at an even higher number than he’s been playing at. If we do we have to hit a home run in the draft with regards to TE/Wr or we’re gonna watch a repeat of 2019. If he wants top of the market qb money (which I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve) there’s teams out there that a)have the cap room to absorb the money + acquire the talent he wants (Raiders?)or b)already have the talent in place (Chargers, Bucs, Titans, Niners)

Did you catch this:

Yes. I just think that there's a difference between guys you want and guys you actively push for. And, while Brady could surprise me, I don't see him pushing for AB if the Patriots get some other legitimate WR talent.
