Deion Sanders: Too many people being inducted into the HOF

@sb1 Deion is wrong about too many players, although there are too many of the wrong ones, but your title is spot on. Dungy, Cowher & Johnson?? Over Flores & Coryell??
Definitely too many damn people in there.
WTH

Again, too many people, all those mentioned are lacking.

The Hall of Fame became an utter comedy show when Tony Dungy got in. Guy is the most dishonorable, phony, lying dirt bag and wasn’t even a very good coach. Brown nosing and politics can get you a long way. Just look at what it did for Saint Tony.

He set the bar so low that of course Cowher and Johnson belong in comparison to that clown.

Terrell Davis and kurt warner should not be in

This is true of the NFL/football. It's also true of MLB/Baseball. It's also true of the NBA/basketball.

In no universe should Eli be a hall of famer. Average at best QB who had lightning strike twice.

It's not that there are too many people being inducted into the HOF (I'm pretty sure NFL is the toughest to get in among the big 4 sports in America), it's that the wrong people are getting in. As mentioned by posters above, guys like Tony Dungy and Terrell Davis are not HOFers. Eli Manning should not be a HOFer either, but he will probably get in down the line just for beating the Patriots.

I agree. It’s getting too easy to get in. Guys like Phillip Rivers and Matt Stafford are on their way because of their garbage time stat collection.

I always thought baseball was the hardest, but their standards have declined as well. All are becoming the Hall of the Very Good, or Nearly So.

Jerome Bettis says hello

Warner - Yes, he should be in.

Eli - Just waiting for people arguing for him to burst out in laughter and admit they can’t really do it.

Bettis - No way.

Davis - Tough call because short career. Hall of Fame prime for sure. I would vote him in over someone like Frank Gore who is an irrelevant stat collector. Davis’s impact made a dent and he was great.

What I don't get is why isn't Gino Cappelletti or Stanley Morgan aren't in yet.

The NFL is all about making money. Integrity and quality control are totally in service to the money mission. If putting more people into the HOF brings in more money, then that's what they will do. We can winge and thrash and break appliances (thanks, @Ice_Ice_Brady ) all we want, but it's futile.

???

Leaving Warner aside for the moment, Davis had 4 healthy seasons. In those 4 seasons:

  • 1 MVP
  • 2 SBs
  • 3x All Pro
  • 4 seasons of 1000+ yards rushing, for 6413 total rushing yards
  • 2000+ yard rushing season
  • Over 1000 yards receiving

Other than longevity, why would he miss out?

There was an article in The Athletic where a group of NY Giants beat reporters with a couple national guys weighed in on his legacy. A couple of them are actually hall of fame voters and when asked if they would let him in gave some diplomatic answer about having 5 years to decide after figuring out where Eli’s legacy lands.
As far as I’m concerned if you have to think about it then they shouldn’t be in. Ideally I think it should be an instant yes if a player is truly a hall of famer. You shouldn’t have to hem and haw for 5 years you should know player X was best 1, 2, or 3 at his position for a decent stretch and his one of the NFL’s elite.

Half right.

Warner's numbers hold up.
Both are complicated.

Warner only even started 12 or more games 4 times over 12 NFL seasons, with injuries and benchings sprinkled in. Davis had 1 good and then 3 absolutely outrageous seasons, then basically succumbed to injuries. I don’t know that I give Warner bonus points for the extra longevity. It’s 4 seasons. If you reframe the question as whether ~4 elite seasons and not much else is HoF worthy, I think you could argue a simple no on both counts. Anyway each their own but I think it’s hard to argue for one of these players but not the other, or vice versa.

Warner and Davis...

The late 90s Broncos and then Rams are as close as teams can get to a dynasty in the salary cap era. This was the way it was going and then the Patriots put everything on hold for twenty years. Get ready for a lot of three year "dynasties" with 1-2 Lombardis and then back to mediocrity. That's how the league was supposed to work.

Davis arguably had the best running back peak ever and it directly resulted in two rings. He completely changed the Broncos franchise from a little brother trying to get in the big show to being one of the marquee franchises in the sport.

Obviously with both you are accounting for short peaks. But they changed their franchise with those peaks and made their impact in a big way that few players ever do.
