Tom Brady: an honest take

The Pats crapped the bed big time yesterday, not much good to say about anything to do with that game.

If folks do not see the decline of #12 then they are not paying attention, there were drops, but there were a lot of off target throws.. the pick 6 for example.

There used to be an oft quoted adage used on this board that it was better to let a player go a year early rather than a year too late..

#12 has been falling off dramatically this year, #11 is seriously injured and we are up against the salary cap... so all the ideation about a quality TE and everything else is just a pipedream..

It doesn't really matter if Brady is there next year or not, the Patriots won't be good at all.

Thus it would be smart to move on.

They are old and have won a lot. Fatigue is setting in.

Who would Brady even throw to next year? 34 year old Edelman and a bunch of 1st or 2nd year players?

Whole OL might be a mess.

No TE.

RBs are average, Burkhead and White getting old for a RB.

Brady would again have a much declining production, probably 2015 Peyton like.

It would be smart for him to retire and not get exposed as a washed up QB and for the Patriots to start rebuilding and grab a top notch QB in 2021 and in 2020 to pay Thuney etc, play younger players and see if Stidham is a good backup in the future or even trade material.

Wait, what? The Patriots "won't be good at all"? They have a terrific defense that will suffer some turnover but will return a LOT of quality players. They have a nice stable of running backs. Their OL should be much improved with the return of Andrews and a full year out of Wynn and full health for Cannon and Mason.

They still need upgrades at WR and TE. But WR should be better with another year under the belt for Harry and Meyers. They need to add more talent but they can do that. This team still will be very competitive next year. At some point they won't be, but next year isn't the year the team as a whole falls off the cliff. Unless they replace Brady with some scrap heap QB.

I am not seeing his decline.

I am seeing a god awful receiver corps that can get no separation, and TEs who don’t know how to run a route, and the one time Tom squeezes a ball to a WR they often drop it.

Then you're blind. Last four years' stats:

2016: 67.4%, 3554 yds, 28 td, 2 int, 8.2 y/a, 112.2 rating
2017: 66.3%, 4577 yds, 32 td, 8 int, 7.9 y/a, 102.2 rating
2018: 65.8%, 4355 yds, 29 td, 11 int, 7.6 y/a, 97.7 rating
2019: 60.8%, 4057 yds, 24 td, 8 int, 6.6 y/a, 88.0 rating

The numbers, over such a large sample size, certainly are indicating a decline. Now keep in mind that he's declined from an MVP level down to a league-average starting QB level, which isn't bad for a 42 year old. But he IS declining. There's just no way around it. Maybe it's all because of his health, but that's part of the equation especially when you get as old as he is.

Here are his numbers against playoff teams in 2019:

at Buf: 18-39 (46.2%), 150 yds, 0 td, 1 int, 45.9 rating
at Bal: 30-46 (65.2%), 285 yds, 1 td, 1 int, 80.4 rating
at Phi: 26-47 (55.3%), 216 yds, 0 td, 0 int, 67.3 rating
at Hou: 24-47 (51.1%), 326 yds, 3 td, 1 int, 85.9 rating
vs KC: 19-36 (52.8%), 169 yds, 1 td, 1 int, 63.3 rating
vs Buf: 26-33 (78.8%), 271 yds, 1 td, 0 int, 111.0 rating
TOTAL: 143-248 (57.7%), 1407 yds, 6 td, 4 int, 75.1 rating

That's....not good. At all.

BB: an honest take

4th and 1 on 1 yd goal line kick the field goal (decision issue)

1:43 and 3 timeouts decided to go to lockroom (time man issue)
Edelman is hurt and they don't rest him (roster man issue)
They don't throw to the TE (Why would you draft a RB in the third round if you NEED a professional TE)

Is he on decline?

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

What fourth and one ? What are you even talking about ?

Maybe stick to beach volleyball or something.. neither types of football seem to be something that people from Brazil can comprehend.

Completely agree. Lots of blame to share all around.

You’d think that last SB would have ended the Jimmy talk. Incredible lol.

Yeah, this website today has been bad. Im usually as respectful as possible, but not even I can hold back. I understand people wanted to win, but 70% of this board sounds really entitled.
ChiefsPlanet is an upgrade

Brady certainly had a poor statistical season and the question is whether it is due to his decline or a lack of talent similar to what he had in 2013. My sense is that it is a little of both. Sees unlikely Brady will ever be able to stay completely healthy and return to a top 2 or 3 QB but with better weapons I don't see why Brady can't be top 7 or 8 and be the clutch playoff QB we have seen year after year. My hope is that they can agree to a 1 year incentive laden contract that is reasonable on the cap and fair to Brady. Make one more run then hope that Stidham has the goods to take the top spot in 2021.

Regarding JG, I could have sworn he missed most of last season due to injury but I must have read that wrong.

Thanks for doing this up.

There's just no way around this. That's bad. I really hope Kraft's affection for Brady doesn't get in the way of what's best for the future of this franchise.

..and here they come.

The Garrapolites. Jimmy is 13-3 and everyone is pissed

They are 13-3. But I don't trust Jimmy G. I just don't. I think he's going to be the reason they don't win.

Sorry if that's another dumb take of mine.

This is Jimmy's 1st playoff run. He's talented. Has a good team....but sometimes he is a bit careless with the football

On the Harry pass, I think Brady threw it exactly where he wanted to — where he expected Harry to go. But the receiver got held up and didn't finish the route. The Sanu pass did seem to sail.

Brady was awful yesterday. As a 43 year old male who keeps himself in decent shape, I can sympathize with how difficult it can be to avoid nagging injuries. I've battled tennis elbow a number of times over the last 5 years. It can take quite a while to clear up and is really annoying.

These kinds of injuries just linger around and continue to pop up.

For example, 24 points scored against Miami should have *easily* been enough, if the defense played up to its normal 2019 standard. But nope.
Selective short term memory.

Defense gave up 20 points not 27.
In the spirit of Christmas, Teflon Tom gifted Miami 7

Then there‘s what the NE coach was feeling about his 2019 league average QB with 1:45 left in the 2nd qtr:
“Do I have faith in my QB to get a first down let alone lead a scoring drive after all the passes he’s air mailed in the first half?
Nope!
Let the clock run
Only call running plays
Calling timeouts is futile”
—————————————-
1st half info BB had processed:

1st series: Brady 1-1 for 4 ydS
2nd series: Brady 2-4 for 20 yds
3rd series: Brady 0-2 INT (pick 7)
4th series: Brady 1-4 for 18 yds
5th series: Brady 1-1 for 50 yds (IMO underthrown ball with fearless catch)
———————————-
5-12 for 92 yds and INT

For the game: 55% passer

For the love of God Brady....RETIRE!!...YOU ARE DONE. Every fan in New England thinks so.
Your coach thinks so too.

What I don't get is how many take pointing out that he obviously is not healthy as a criticism or attack on Brady. He is the GOAT but right now he is not playing like it. A tennis elbow and an alleged low body injury just don't let him.

How often has anyone seen Brady sailing a pass like the one to an open Dorsett early in the game. This is all you need to know about his physical state right now. And, yes, this is part of getting older.

He's been doing it quite a bit this year.

He's been doing it quite a bit this year.

He has been uncharacteristically having pretty subpar first drives but often things settle after that. Not yesterday.
