OT: Astros caught cheating to win their title!

Chris Mortensen (the poster child of bad reporting and, now, bad Karma) turned a report on balls that were within 0.23 psi (the weight of a toothpick or well within one standard deviation of the mean) of what they should have weighed after being inflated in a room at 72 degrees Fahrenheit and then spending three hours at 40 degrees with a cold rain into a slander on Brady, Belichick and the Patriots organization.

:confused:o_O

4 years later and still no PSI measurements collected by the league released to the public.

I think anyone with a brain knows why.
I would be amazed if they're even still doing it. It was never something that was even remotely taken seriously before or after our little incident.

A) it’s baseball. B) it involved computers and hacking.
FWIW, the "hacking" wasn't exactly anything that involved, like, serious hackers. It was just a Cardinals analytics guy who knew the password of his colleague, Sig Mejdal. Mejdal went from St. Louis to Houston and apparently didn't change his password (or only made a minor, easily guessed change). So that Cardinals analytics guy was able to access Mejdal's info, scouting reports, etc.

I would be amazed if they actually did it when they were saying that they did.

Apparently MLB knew about the cheating and did nothing about it...

Holy crap. A hidden buzzer... is this for real?

If true MLB has to hit them hard imo. And the NFL owes the Patriots an apology and both first rounders. Anything the Patriots might have done doesn’t come close to something systemic like this.

Apparently MLB knew about the cheating in early 2019 and did nothing about it...

It's getting to a point where I think the Astros should be stripped of their title, if the commissioner has the power to do it

I think it’s very unlikely that will happen but the rumblings I’m seeing in the media make me wonder if they really are considering it. That would be unbelievable if they really did. If they find real evidence of cheating in the World Series I think the MLB commish would almost have to do it even though I’m sure he would rather not.

If it does then it feels like the Patriots would be back in the spotlight again

Also starting to wonder if the Red Sox need to find someone else to manage at the start of next season :(. Feels like Cora’s connection to the Astros might cost him a bunch of games.

Sports cheaters always have a whistleblower. Lance Armstrong’s masseuse. Steve Courson on the 70’s Steelers and their PED use. Ben Johnson’s coach. The guy that uses to pitch for the Astros in this case and it goes on and on.

And yet- not one credible person has ever blown the whistle on anything going on with the Patriots. Lots of ex Patriots employees and players in and out of the league and... not one. Go figure.
Just to follow up on how sage the above post is, Peter Gammons is saying the primary whistleblowers are disgruntled ex-scouts for the Astros. So, as mentioned above, it is "amazing" that no ex-Pats have ever come out with anything.

Yup... not even from players or other employees who didn’t leave on the best terms and would be more inclined to spill the beans if something was going on.

Now there is a report they used buzzers to key the hitters to the type of pitch. If true then the hitters who used them need to be banned from baseball and the execs and coaches who did need to be banned as well. If Shoeless Joe and Pete Rose are banned, then these players and
team officials need to be as well.

What's the difference between steroids and buzzers?

With steroids you still have to guess whats is coming. Hard or fast. With buzzers you know whats coming hard or fast. If you know 99 is coming you don’t have to worry about 85. Same with the opposite. That makes hitting tremendously easier.

One does’t help you hit the ball. The other does. Which means you get a lifetime ban. Players included.

Why? If the buzzer report comes true...it is the biggest cheating scandal in all of sports. Period. That deserves a thread such as this.
Now that it's been moved to the Bankofamericasox forum, no problem.

Ridiculous. This is a massive scandal, one that dwarfs spygate and deflategate yet nobody cares.

Nothing wrong with this being on the main page. Absolutely nothing.

It's off-topic, you mistakenly believe that others here care about it as much as you do. This is a FOOTBALL message board and we're in the stretch run of FOOTBALL season. Perhaps you should find a sleepytime summer lawn recreation message board somewhere with like-minded folks who share your interest. In the main forum it's just OT clutter.

Aside from that, the scandal isn't as "massive" as you might think, given that cheating is common in baseball -- always has been and always will be. That's why the outrage isn't there, as you have observed.

It isn’t massive? Wait a second here. So having a system to alert hitters to what type of pitch is coming isn’t massive. You have got to be kidding me. That is the basic essence of the game. I throw, you guess what I am throwing. You take that out of the equation then what do you really have? And no that type of cheating isn’t common in baseball.

This is akin to say the Pats patching into TBs headset 5 seconds before the snap to alert him to something and even then that isn’t a fair equivalency.
