Funny that this would come up here. I just changed from a "they" to a "we" in a response in this thread.

If we're fans of the Pats "we" is perfectly fine, maybe more acceptable. I actually don't like seeing posters use that as a criticism, as if we aren't part of the team because we're "only" fans. Fans are the ones paying the freight.

As for Dez, no thanks please.

Interesting you talk about Harry. A decent amount of scouts compared Harry to Dez Bryant. In fact, if you watch their highlights, especially their college highlights, the similarities are really evident.

The "we" stuff happens among every fan base I've ever witnessed. When it comes to sports, some people just can't grasp the difference between who's in a group and who's not. I don't know if it's because "we" was more accurate when mom and dad were helping coach junior, taking him to practices, and paying for all his equipment, and thereby making it a team effort, or just because the "we" people are that desperate to be a part of a group. And I've mistakenly typed "we" on occasion, since I've seen it so often, though I go back and fix it if I see the error.

It's not as if people are going around with the "we" stuff when they buy a car, television, computer, or the like. They're capable of realizing that liking Apple/Sony/Samsung/HP/etc... products doesn't mean they're a member of the company. They just lose that bit of common sense when it comes to sports. They erroneously transfer the "we" of the fan base (a/k/a repeat customers) to the "we" of the team.

Did the scouts go beyond their physical traits and look at intelligence? Have not heard great reports on Dez. The Patriots offense is complicated and selected Harry in round 1 thinking he'll grasp the system.

1. When a country goes to war, THE COUNTRY goes to war. The military fights it, but the country is at war, and the entire country is at risk (at least theoretically). So, the country wins/loses the war, and citizens saying "we" are 100% correct. Your argument would apply if the U.S. went to war against, say, China, and Canada was cheering for the U.S. while not participating in the battle. But, if that were the case, the U.S. wouldn't be saying "We" won, and meaning both the U.S. and Canada. The U.S. would be hearing "We won!" and would be asking "Who's 'we', Canada? You just watched from the sidelines".
   
2. When people vote in an election, their vote literally decides the election. They are, effectively, the players. Candidates cannot win without the voters. So party voters saying "We" are 100% correct.

However, as mere consumers, fans are not required for wins. And, as consumers, fans have nothing more than a rooting stake in a game. So neither of your examples is applicable.

Agree completely. It's like a family member. We celebrate their successes with them. We share their "losses". Something like that.
