Patriots Sign QB Kessler

TB is only an employee.

It's not just the Pick 6. That was just one of many, many overthrows on easy throws he had in the preseason, that were ignored because Meyers and Gunner were fighting to make the team.

I've been pretty consistent, he's not ready, I was dumbfounded that they let Hoyer walk, and my guess was, as you were, that they'd let him develop, and hoped he'd "get it". Looked like the same mistakes to me.

If he fails to develop and it is how he looks next preseason then he might get the Jacoby Brissett treatment and gets send packing.

Until then personally I would keep the fingers crossed that we don't need to play him and just assume that BB and McD will spent as many after hours with him as they did with JG and to same effect.

I think the Pats next QB needs to be a higher first round pick somehow.

Well he's 3rd string now, so he can run the scout team all he wants.

I'm not saying cut him (unless you thought you could get him through to the practice squad), I'm just saying Kessler's not a rental, he's here to stay too, and they can duke it out next August.

Mike Reiss explains it best

Except that doesn't seem to be much of a concern, because they generally haven't carried a QB on the PS, with the notable exception of last year.

Brissett is a special case. I am convinced they drafted Brissett to fill one specific need: QB2 in weeks 1 through 4 of 2016. What happened beyond that . . . I think they took a "we'll see" attitude.

won't be hard to draft high when Brady retires.
does not need to be the number 1 pick just first round.

Maybe package some picks to a team who already has a new high draft QB, but are not great yet, get their first. I don't want the Pats to be 2-14 ever again.

As long as the Kraft Family owns the team, they won't be 2-14. 4-12, 5-11 is their bottom, which isn't great, but isn't putrid either.

So what is your point ? That people in some cases misevaluate players and they get drafted later than they should have been ? Congrats on that realisation.

Nobody projected Prescott to be ready and he only got a chance behind one of the best OL in NFL history and Zeke having a great rookie season because Romo got injured.

It was obvious during preseason that Stidham wasn't there yet.
Brady should have been the top QB picked in 2000. Actually the top pick over all. Michigan coaches effed that up with Hensen.

Never doubt the power of Boosters.

I think if Carr had total say, Henson would never have seen the field.

I share your assessment that Stidham wasn't remotely as ready to play as people seemed to think in the PS. I also was a little surprised that Hoyer was sent packing, and I attribute that to the need to develop Stidham as quickly as possible.

That said, I don't see any way Kesler was signed to be #2. Stidham isn't ready, but he showed genuine promise and NE needs to know asap whether that promise can be fulfilled. Kesler, on the other hand, is just a body so he's far more likely to be here for scout team reps and to take second team reps when Brady is resting.

All IMHO, of course. :)

@SBLIII You really sold on Stidham after just a little Pre-season. His first time on the NFL field he was ghastly. Now it is true that Brett Farve's first NFL pass was a pick 6. (Same for Sam Darnold I beleive)

But Stidham is not gonna be the heir. You don't strike lightening like that twice. Brady is an anomaly.

Next Pat QB somehow needs to be a top pick in my opinion

These are the same people who wanted a 1st round pick for Rohan Davey.

We'll see if it comes to it. Might see it late in the 4th quarter this week. At least Kessler will chuck one in the dirt, rather than float one to the safety.

Kesslers first NFL career pass was to a player in the same color jersey.

I think Phil Kessel will be a great addition

I see you’re doing your homework. Perhaps you could copy someone else’s work.

Why do people always want to throw the baby out with the bath water?

He's had 12 starts and thrown 5 picks, on some real dogshit teams. I was high on him coming out, and think he'll be a competent backup. And he's only a couple of years older than Stidham.
