Colts sign Brian Hoyer to a 3 year deal

1. I think people are missing the fact that Hoyer has a say in where he plays.
2. Why would Hoyer want to play somewhere for a 1 year $1.5M deal when he could get a 4 year $12M deal?
3. Why would Indy send any pick when Indy knows they can over pay and get Hoyer with no picks?
4. Indy talks to Hoyer's agent, Hoyer's agent tells BB and any team that Hoyer has a deal and will not report if traded.
5. NFL contracts do not mean the players are without options. Just call the agent ;-).
6. BB knows the drill and respects the players. All the players know that BB genuinely respects their commitment and personal situation. Look at Bennett's comments earlier this year.
7. Older free agent contracts are one of the Pats lifelines as we pick at the bottom of every draft round.
8. The 6th or 7th rounder is not as important as BB's reputation.
9. Indy has > $15M in cap space in 2020 and will pick a rookie QB in the 2020 draft - Hoyer is the perfect player/coach in Indy. Smart move by Indy.

How does Hoyer have a say? How is that different from ANY NFL player having a say? You can make that argument for every trade that ever gets made.

Which player on the 53 would you have given up?

I would have traded Hoyer rather than cutting. That's the discussion we're having. Not how to keep Hoyer on the roster.

It takes two teams to trade.

So Bill purposely gave up a 4th or 5th rounder for "respect" for Hoyer? I really doubt it. Seems like a miscalculation to me.
In what universe does Brian Hoyer merit a 4th or 5th round pick?

I don't disagree with your post, but wouldn't this be considered tampering?

He has to be on the team to trade him. So you need to cut another player.

Every contract is with EVERY NFL player's agreement. Hoyer can retire and not report. BB is not going to force Hoyer to retire over a 6th or 7th round pick. You really don't understand? Or are you just tryin to argue?

And so....my ignominy is compete. :(

.......And now comes the ANGER! WTF, Bill? If you knew that you were going to cut Hoyer, WHY in God's name didn't you try and get at least SOME value for him. You mean to tell me you couldn't have gotten at least a 5th or 6th rounder. Christ, you paid that much for 2 fatties that would have been cut if you hadn't grabbed them. You're telling me that a QB to a needy team like the Colts wouldn't have gotten you MORE.

Sorry but while we owe Bill a LOT for the last 20 years, occasionally even he makes mistakes, and in the great scheme of things this isn't even a big one. Just seems like a waste to me.

Hoyer did them a favor when he signed for a minimum and let the 49ers pay the bill. Now they are returning the favor letting him choose where to go and make more money.

Pats playing ball with his agent.

Of course! There is tampering all the time. Why does the NFL have agents? For organized and professional tampering.

It would've been a 6th rounder max.

Cassel is available if we need a QB later. That’d be super cool to see Cassel back a decade after he left.
He still has the magic.

9 million to be a backup? Good for him and securing his last payday, but how much is Brissette making?

A case of Hoyer really lucking out. This is very likely the last NFL contract he'll sign. Colts are paying him that much because they need to meet their 89% rule.

Nobody knows how this really came down.

We can suppose, but that's all.

I'd like to think the best, that Bill gave up the late round pick for good will in many directions. Remember his new QB is watching, and Tom might not be privately complimentary these days.

That fact is the team wanted to go all in with Stidham as #2, and we can agree and disagree as we do with many moves because no one is always right.

They call people "Bill apologists" but I am pretty sure he's right more than wrong when compared to all of us.

Clowney to the Skins for Trent Williams would have been a better trade partner for BOB. Instead they got fleeced. Then Flores zapped him big time.

It's not that simple. Because Clowney hadn't signed the franchise tag, no trade could be finalized without his approval. The Redskins could be willing to offer half of their roster but until Clowney signed that contract, he wouldn't be going anywhere.

This isn't a matter of respect. It's a matter of making the best decision for the good of the team. (where have I heard that before. ;) )

But you can still respect the player. Nothing says you can't involve him by asking him where he'd prefer to go, and THEN release him if you can't get a trade in those places. The Colts had a clear and obvious need even from a casual fan's prospective....and you don't even ASK?

How do you know they didn’t ask?

Not to mention Burkhead to the Texans the minute Lamar Miller tore his ACL???

Hell hB.OB. Just gave up 2 first rounders and a 2nd for Tunsil. We could have gotten at least a 4th rounder from that idiot for our RB4 Burkhead.

.
.

But how is Burkhead not redundant to Duke Johnson? The Texans made some bad trades but at least it can be said they landed players for the specific role needed.

How do you know they didn’t ask?
Didn't you know, while Bill never calls, Nick never does anything without consulting me. I mean I didn't mention it at the time, but I was the one who told Nick he ought to check out that Houston GM opening when I found out that Easterby was going to be at the ring ceremony. I didn't know about that clause in his contract. And you better believe Nick hasn't let me forget it either. So anyways.......
