Pats acquire OL Jermaine Eluemunor from Ravens

Sooo...when does he retire? :D

Both Lazar and Bedard are complimentary of Eluemunor’s tackle film. It sounds like he could be a better tackle right now than Cunningham, in addition to his guard versatility. That would explain the difference in trade compensation.

Seems high for a guy who seemed to be on the bubble?

They get a 6th back a least.
I don't think its a big deal, essentially all they did was move down around 60 spots with one of their FOURTEEN picks next year. Evidently, Eluemeanor had a 5th round value, and as someone already said, we don't have a 5th, so this was a way for the team to create a 5th rounder.

BTW- by the time you get to the bottom of the 5th round and beyond, you are essentially getting to pick players off you priority FA list. There isn't much difference between them and they are all just shots in the dark. While there are always some that do great things, and the Pats success in developing UDFA's is extraordinary. But like I said, the guys you get in the lower rounds, are just UDFA's that you don't have to recruit to come here.

There are Always good players available in the 5th round, and beyond, with top-100 grades that have for whatever reason slipped to day 3...if one is willing to look for them, and not just for the few dozen players on one's own personal board, allegedly the shortest in the league, yet somehow one that still included the likes of Duke Dawson...

Checked in on Ravens reddit, to get a sense of how those goons feel about him. The second thread, post compensation reveal, is full of

“We fleeced them!”
“Big d*ck Decosta does it again!”

Please, Baby Jesus, let him become an All Pro, so that those pukes all eat crow.

I suspect that he had been a Pats draft target and they took the opportunity to grab him and get him into their system. I was surprised by the compensation as well but as others have pointed put, it probably would have been a 5th if they had one.

Another way to look at these trades is that they traded a 4th for both of them. If either becomes a starter, it would be well worth it.

True. Good points

So they traded a 5th round pick for a guy who was a 5th round pick. Shocking. :)

That’s because everyone’s top 100 is different and there are probably 200 players or more that are on someone’s top 100.
Why would a team look for players that they didn’t evaluate high? You are saying someone evaluated them higher and the league disagreed so that makes them a good pick??

Well, the way you win a negotiation is when the opposing party is desperate and you can walk away at any time. BB has made a living fleecing other desperate coaches and GMs, especially those who are in "win now or be fired" mode.

Although BB doesn't have to worry about his job, this year it is the Pats that are a bit unprepared due to some bad luck and some factors that simply couldn't be helped or planned for. Those were:
  • Oakland offering a completely insane contract to last year's starting LT, Trent Brown. 4 yrs / $66M?? Really?
  • Jared Veldheer decides to retire before the season starts. Veldheer could have held the fort at LT for a few games while Wynn was eased back in, and then served as the backup swing tackle after.
  • Center David Andrews is lost for most or all of the year (at best).
As a result, we have lost three starting or part-time starting offensive linemen. We now have to throw to the wolves our semi-rookie LT coming off a severe Achilles injury (I know he has looked great, but easing him in would have been better, I can't believe he won't have some growing pains) and start our most capable interior back-up at center. We had no capable OT backup and our only interior line backup is a promising, but clearly developmental, rookie.

Of course, many teams would kill to have a starting five OL as good as the Pats (if Wynn continues to look so good so early), but after losing three offensive linemen our depth is pretty much in the toilet. In this case it is we who are a bit desperate to get a capable, ready-to-go-now swing OT backup and interior line backup. We probably did overpay a bit in both cases, but the need was great. We'll just have to see if these two new additions are decent backups.

Apologies if already posted.

So bottom line is they gave up a 4th Round pick to get the two OLmen. If just one of them becomes a solid backup, that's a good deal.

Just watched Eluemunor's lone start at left tackle last year against the Steelers. Looks like a pretty good athlete. Made it hard on Bud Dupree to get around the edge. One obvious hold. Couple hurries. More on my Instagram story @philaperry.

So we have our own picks (except for a 5th), 4 comp picks and a couple of 7th.

That's nowhere near enough. We need to trade players to increase our number of picks and to get back the 5th.

:)

1st round pick

2nd round pick

3rd round pick
3rd round pick - Compensatory
3rd round pick - Compensatory

4th round pick = Jermaine Eluemunor
4th round pick (via Bears)

6th round pick (via Ravens)
6th round pick = Korey Cunningham
6th round pick - Compensatory
6th round pick - Compensatory

7th round pick
7th round pick (via Eagles)
7th round pick (via Falcons)

Ok but they got Bennett for a 5th and 7th. Different ages and all, but way different skill levels too.

True enough--but don't forget compensation levels, too. Bennett is making over 13 times as much $$.

For value comparision:

The Bills traded offensive guard Wyatt Teller to the Browns, the team announced Thursday. They also sent a seventh-round choice in 2021.

In return, Cleveland will send Buffalo fifth- and sixth-round choices in 2020.

The Bills made Teller a fifth-round choice in 2018. He started the final seven games of his rookie season at left guard.

The Bills listed Teller as the second-team right guard.

So, the Bills traded a guy and a 7th in 2021 for a 5th and 6th next year and people think that the Patriots got fleeced?

Both guys would be PS eligible if cut, but they would have to go unsigned in the cut-day flood. Both seem to need some time in Scar school.
Time for one or both of them to have a "unfortunate" injury during practice so the Pats can hang onto them without using the roster spot.

Don't think we traded for them to IR them.
