Not really, even though it's a good thought. It screams we need a backup that can play G or C. Because if a G or another C goes down we will need the next man up which this trade could fill.It does sort of scream "Thuney could be moving to center, if needed.", doesn't it?
He might be eager to wear the red throwbacks. Plus no teas are on the banned substances list.Still uncomfortable about Brit players. That 1812 thingy.
You mean burning Washington? Seems to me they had the right idea.Still uncomfortable about Brit players. That 1812 thingy.
I don't think Ferentz's promotion had to do with how they felt about Karras, but that they needed an interior backup with Mason and Schwenke both injured at the time. This is just me reading between the lines from last season when Ferentz surprisingly was added to the 53, but I don’t think the coaches think very highly of Ted Karras as a Center.
Yes, you can say it would weaken two positions, but I would not be surprised to see Thuney at Center with Karras, Froholdt or Eluemuner playing left guard when the season opens. Maybe, the guy who intentionally got a 37 on his Wonderlic might be a little more up to the cerebral aspects of the position than Alex Karras’ great-nephew.

Weakening the G position does not make sense to me.
Rather have 2 All-Pro caliber guards and a functional C than functional G, C and just 1 all-pro G
I think either Thuney or Mason played some snaps at center in camp or in a preseason game maybe 2 years ago, right?
STILL seems like a pretty big turnover so late in the process.
Considering TB12 is there I do notIt makes sense if you think center is the more important position.
Without a functional center, everything falls apart. As Shaq Mason says, the center is the QB of the line. It all starts there, so if Karras can't pull his weight, you can bet he will be gone within the minute.
Maybe. Or maybe they’re just throwaway late round picks used during the last week of preseason and one stays/the other doesn’t. It’s not like Belichick won’t make one simple trade during the draft to replenish a 6th or 7th round pick. Didn’t we have a bunch of late round picks for 2020? Like, 4 sixth rounders or something?
I’m not reading much into this aside from bringing in some competition for Croston, and possible practice squaders. The only difference is that Bill wasn’t afraid to use a late rounder on a guy that they may have considered last year, as opposed to being forced to pick off of the scrap heap of cuts. I wouldn’t be shocked to see one stay, but I’d be surprised to see both make it.
All they really need to remember is: inside gap, head-on, outside gap.I'm less anxiety filled about Karras starting at C than I am about the back up situation. Clearly the jail breaks we saw last Thursday were the catalyst for today's moves. Karras is bigger, stronger, and more athletic than Andrews who had better technique, was quicker, and had more consistency than Karras had previously shown.
Karras has been in this system for 4 years now and I think the "can he make the OL calls" thing is overblown. It's not like he's a rookie. He's been asked to make OL calls for over 400 practices in his time with the Pats, so I think he knows them. Andrews had to do it as a rookie for 11 games and all but 2 the last 3 years. I'm confident that between the experience OG's and Karras we will get into the right protections a vast majority of the time. Eventually we might even see an improvement from Karras if he develops as most long term Dante' students do.
That being said, the back up situation is currently horrifying. Froholdt isn't ready (not that he should be), and Ferentz is having a bad summer. The health of our OL has been critical to the success of this extraordinary run. For the most part for the last 3 years our OL has pretty much been intact with only Cannon missing more than a couple of games over that time. It's a wonderful record, but the Pats would be fools not to believe that the pendulum might start swinging the other way eventually.
As of THIS moment, the "next man up" is pretty much non-existent. The new guys will need at least a few weeks to learn an entirely new system before they can be counted on to come in and play, whether they have any talent or not.
Right now, we'd better hope we have yet ANOTHER year of injury free luck from this OL because without it a strong strength of this team could quickly become a weakness. Because even if these new guys or any other OL pickups in the next few days are actually good acquisitions, our OL better be healthy for until the beginning of October at least. It will take at least that long to get any new guys up to speed.
