IMO, a reliable backup (especially one that knows the system) should be a lock to make the 53.
The more I think about it if they plan on keeping essentially 3 rookies in Harry, Meyers and (almost a rookie) Berrios they really need to keep Dorsett.

If Josh comes back and Berrios is the PR/KR if he goes then JE is PR and I really don't want that all season.

Dawson is just another one in the long list of 2nd round DB busts by BB.

Hope Williams will be good but the odds are stacked against him.
The past has nothing to do with the present.

Of course, there have been veteran additions that looked comfortable (Welker, Hogan) right away, but I suspect you meant rookie WR additions, and it simply is rare for a rookie to be able to mind meld with TB and know where he is supposed to be consistently. I would guess that last one might be Edelman, also a QB convert. Of course, they are very different players, Edelman is vastly more athletic, and unlike Meyer played no receiver snaps in college.

Some of you might remember better, but I think I remember that Brady and Edelman "got" each other right away, but Edelman was considered more injury prone early on and of course he had one of the all time great slot receivers playing ahead of him until Welker left.

As I recall, Edelman looked intriguing from the start but had a lot to learn, and wasn't considered a lock to make the team. It's easy to forget how slowly his career developed. Over his first four seasons, Edelman actually had more punt returns than pass receptions.

Welker, of course, absolutely did click in from day one--a dozen years ago! And IMO no rookie or veteran acquisition has looked so good since.

Hogan and Thompkins seem like solid comps for Meyers' performance through a whopping 1 preseason game. :) If he should happen to continue on their trajectories, that would point to a roster spot and 30-40 receptions year one.

Dorsett needs to make more plays...I don't see him as a starter if his current streak continues. He needs to be more consistent on the field his disappearing act for stretches is getting annoying.

You're so anti-Dorsett that he could catch 500 passes for 10,000 yards and you'd still be telling us that he's probably going to get cut.

Agreed. Thompkins was one of the weirder WRs in recent memory. He could separate from almost anyone but his WR skills weren’t there (hands, working the sideline, etc). He still had a 2 TD game, a GW TD & another 100+ yard game on SNF in his first 5 games. Everything just fizzled out after that.

Meyers is definitely closer to him than past preseason stars vs. 3rd stringers. KT was targeted 14 times week 1 in 2013 after a stellar camp/preseason so I won’t be surprised if Meyers starts across Edelman. He will need to make more of it this time around.
One thing about Thompkins was that he was an older UDFA because of those issues he had. He was already 25 by the time camp started. He may have already been maxed out physically at that point.

Meyers is just 22 so he could have room to grow.

I think JE would have developed at a more accelerated pace had WW not been on the team.

We need to start 2 rookies at WR this year. These guys are our future.

So were Dobson and Thompkins (with a little Sudfeld added in).

who knows. What I do suspect is that Edelman at 33 with 4 more years on his tires would have slowed down by now.

It's possible, and the Gronk-Hernandez duo didn't help, nor did injuries. But the 2010 Patriots were hardly rich in WRs, and Edelman only managed 4 catches in 13 games.

I'll say again (and I know this is nitpicking semantics), but "start" is a pretty vague concept in today's NFL. We're going to change the gameplan week to week, more so than most other teams. Outside of Edelman, I could easily see a regular rotation for who is the 2nd most important receiver on this team, depending on matchups, gameplan, and who's peaking at the time. We don't need to start 2 rookies, but it would be nice to have the 2 rookies contribute (even if off and on) through the whole season.

I haven't gone to any training camp practices this year, but I'm tempted to go to tomorrow's, just to get a percentage about how often the team lines up 3WR.

I'm sure I'll get over the temptation long before tomorrow comes around, though.

Bill says Meyers has a long way to go .... that’s it, he’s a lock.

It's an hour practice before they head to Nashville. Last practice open to public. Not sure you'll get much out of it.
