Shelton is having a great camp. Maybe the just don’t like what they’ve seen from Pennel I mean this guy got his option declined by the Jets it’s not like we are talking about JJ Watt.
Pennel was very good last year and the Jets are idiots

Jete drafted a DL in the 1st round, weren't going to pay the back-up.
Yea. He wasn't super-expensive either. I thought I read something about Gase changing the defensive scheme?

Like the idea of having 2 hogs available for the D.....

What's the problem?

I do not understand the posters who rated my OP as funny? Essentially laughing at someone for asking a legitimate question is pretty childish in general but in this case it really highlights that you pay more attention to the name on the back of the jersey than the actual play of the player.

We are talking about whether a 6th year player with 15 career starts, who has not had a sack since 2015 and a run stuff since 2017. He was an effective run stuffer on a team that played most games from behind the last 2 seasons, he only played 31% of snaps last season.

It isn’t a problem it is that his role in practice and during the preseason game would indicate he isn’t on track to make the 53 man roster.

To the OP, damned if I know. I thought Parry looked pretty good the other night. I expect Pennell, Guy, and Shelton to be the guys, but...

That fourth DT? Butler? Parry? Cowart?

The only one I think absolutely safe is Guy. He's just been too consistently good. After that, earn it.

Have you considered the possibility he is still learning the defense and the techniques they want him to use? Guy, Shelton and Butler have the institutional knowledge and are ahead of him for those reasons?

David Parry is playing before him and he wasn’t on the roster last season either. Don’t take my OP wrong I don’t want Pennel to get cut I am just trying to figure out what’s going on with him. I cannot recall a perceived starting caliber player playing Q4 of any preseason game and making the team.

Also, if it was what you’re suggesting wouldn’t they want to get him more reps?

We still have two games Titans/Panthers for the players to stake their claim for the 53 , as I believe the Giants game is more or less a last hurrah for the guys that will be cut on the 31st August. The coaches must have a good idea who they think will make the 53 after the Titans game , so I hope we see more of the starters against the Panthers

Who knows why he only played a few snaps. Maybe BB had no intention of playing him but another player might have gotten dinged up and he needed to go in for a few snaps.

What I do know is BB and the coaching staff will increase a player's practice reps or preseason snaps if they need more information/film to evaluate a player in particular situations. Maybe they already know what they have in him and they wanted to see more of Shelton, Parry, Kamalu and Cowart.

Keep in mind Pennel is a rotational player. They did not break the bank to get him. They did give him $500k to sign here so he would be an expensive cut.

There are conflicting reports on his standing in the depth chart and how he has performed in practice.

My point is wouldn't read too much into #snaps and when players play in games as there are a million reasons why BB does what he does and it's a wasted effort to speculate.

Only if he can play TE

To me, the worrying thing is that he started camp being given starter reps then apparently slid down the depth chart based on camp performance. Maybe he's just temporarily in the doghouse, but the DT situation does look different if Pennel doesn't pan out.

Yea I saw Bedard report that. Certainly doesn't sound good. Who knows.

Its entirely probable that Pennel is playing as well as he had with the Jets and Sheldon is finally showing the talent he was born with. I believe Sheldon can be a very good DT/NT when he wants to be...with effort. Sheldon may be higher on the depth chart in Bill's World for all we know.

This is a position where a player has a limited shelf life that can end quickly.

Alan Branch went from arguably team defensive MVP to bust in one season. Terrence Knighton, Albert Haynesworth... there have been guys here who suddenly couldn't do it anymore.

Maybe Cowhart or David Perry are looking better and BB doesn't want another Alan Branch situation where they are stuck with the guy waiting to get out of his funk.

Plus they save 2 million in cap.

Nah bud, I opted out of your adorable definition games years ago. That's why I was attempting to turn the conversation back to the main point instead. I hope you find somebody else to play, though! It's always a shame when you have to spend Friday night playing with yourself.

I made an obvious point about 2 relevant items of info in Ian's feed being a bit contradictory. There was nothing that should have been considered even remotely controversial about such an obvious observation.

The downside to the rating system is that people on here do their drive by ratings and carry on without any explanation (funny, disagree, dislike). If the ratings didn’t exist, they’d be forced to respond if it truly bothered them or just ignore the post.

But the post does seem pretty random at this point in time, especially since we’ve heard conflicting reports. Evan Lazar has had praise for him stating his been a force in the middle with Guy. In a world fighting for clicks, some reporters are just going to troll to get your attention.

Let’s just relax and see how it plays out.

I don't think Bedard is a fan , just based on the player news section he is the main detractor , maybe he bust his fantasy football team in the past
