Could the Patriots Win a SB With Hoyer as the Starting QB?

If you have an opinion that says "NO!, Impossible". Then why do you think we keep him? Teams have won with their backup, the Giants, the Eagles (ouch) ..... it happens. If BB doesn't think we win with Hoyer than offer him a coaching job and go with the developmental Stidham.

IMO, if he's on this team then BB thinks we can win with him. It would make no sense otherwise. So, let's see if he makes the team.

You keep him because you think he can somewhat competently finish out a game if Brady gets hurt. Or hopefully play well enough to go something like 2-2 if Brady had to miss several games and so keep the team's head above water. That doesn't mean you have confidence in him (or that he has the ability) to get the team into and through the playoffs.

Agreed and he can do that as an affordable backup who knows the offense, can run the scout team proficiently and will never be a malcontent.

It would be really nice if Belichick would, at some point, explain this decision. After all, any explanation requires that one of two things be true:
  • Belichick did not believe that winning the Super Bowl was his highest priority, or
  • He believed that, somehow, he had a better chance of winning without Butler than he did with Butler.
I don't think you can craft a plausible explanation without one of those two assumptions.

Maybe he will release a book about it in the future. One reasonable explanation I can come up with is that Butler was so terrible in practice (Maybe due to an injury or some distraction), that it was impossible for BB to have him in the game. So maybe BB felt (Not saying he's right) that Butler would make no difference whatsoever. The other far fetched explanation is that BB caught Butler with an illegal substance, didn't tell anyone else because he wanted to protect Butler, but used it as a reason to punish him. Or It's possible BB just had a very bad night at the office. SB 42 & SB 52 were not his shining moments on the big stage. It happens. When you get to the big stage so many times, it's bound to happen.

The shame in all of this is that Butler is directly responsible for winning them SB 49. He will be a hero in New England forever. And he was a damn good player with the Pats after that. For the "decision" to overshadow all of that...is...sad.

There is no way this thread should be on its 5th page.

If the Texans can make it to the playoffs (and I think the divisional round?) with Hoyer I'm pretty sure we could find a way.

Not the divisional round. They got smoked in wild card weekend. Hoyer threw for 4 picks, 0 TDs and for only 136 yds. He went 5-4 with Houston that year. We can hope for mediocrity at best.

It's the summer and we're desperate!!

Edelman is the unquestioned best wide receiver in the NFL and we would win a Super Bowl with Hoyer.

We're not biased though, are we?

LOL, in my defense, I said it was correct to put Edelman in the top 5 of WRs based on his body of work, and that we would NOT win a SB with Hoyer. But we're definitely still desperate for football topics in the doldrums of summer.

If Rex Grossman and the corpse of Peyton Manning could make it to the Super Bowl, the New England God Damn Patriots with BB and this core could with Hoyer. Screw the haters

Lol Peyton Manning had an all time great defense behind him. The Bears had the best defense in football.

The New England God Damn Patriots have zero shot to win a Super Bowl with Hoyer unless their defense is far and away the best in football and probably would have to be an all time great defense.

Not the case, so zero chance with Hoyer.

That OR the field has to be pretty weak. In which case, they could make the SB. Who's your biggest threat in the AFC right now? KC? If everything lines up perfectly (division sucks and you get a bye and get a weak divisional round opponent) all you'd have to do is beat one more team. You guys are telling me the Pats as they are now, with Hoyer, could not beat 1 or 2 teams in the playoffs if they were weak?

I mean I'm old enough to remember 2008 pre season Cassel and how we were supposed to go 4-12 or 5-11 with him once Brady went down yet went 11-5 and missed the playoffs. Weirder **** has happened with this team. I'm not saying I'd put money on it but I wouldn't be surprised Pikachu face about it if they found a way to make it work IF the field wasn't loaded like say in 2004

Depends on the situation.

If Brady goes down week 1 like in 2008... the chances would not be so good... to be generous.

Now if say Brady goes down in week 15 with the Patriots 11-3. Hoyer comes in and gets his feet wet beating up on the Bills and Jets at home. Patriots finish 13-3 and get the #1 seed. The in the divisional round the Patriots get a good matchup(think 2011 Tebow Broncos, or 2017 Titans) I see us advancing to the AFCCG. And if we can catch another break? Maybe the Colts? Andrew Luck has still never beat the Patriots. Well then we could see Hoyer starting in the Super Bowl . And say we draw a team like the 2018 Rams... well Brian Hoyer could end up with as many rings as Aaron Rodgers.

This is basically what I'm saying. Everything would have to bounce perfectly for it to happen. We probably won't get a bye with him starting all year but I still think we take the division...from there on out anything goes

The one thing concerning about Hoyer is that he is prone to lots of turnovers. That's the one thing that has hampered him. If he got that under control, I wouldn't be surprised to see the team win a SB with him. Especially with BB as coach.

That's like saying that the one thing about Steve Ridley is that he was prone to lots of fumbles. It was the one thing that hampered him. He couldn't get over it and neither is Hoyer going to get over throwing the football directly into an opponent's breadbasket once out of every 4 passes he attempts.. That's on a good day. Great guy, ok backup, but he blows.

Let’s be real, winning the Super Bowl was a HUGE accomplishment last year WITH BRADY!!

We’re a Dee Ford offsides penalty away from losing WITH BRADY, but we’re going to convince ourselves that we could still do it without him? The 'him' being the greatest of all time and most important player in your team.

Hoyer actually has a career interception rate less than or equal to

Peyton Manning
Drew Brees
Ben Roethlisberger
Andrew Luck
Matt Ryan
Patrick Mahomes
Kirk Cousins
Jared Goff
Matthew Stafford

:D

The Dee Ford offside wouldn't have mattered had Gronk not tipped a wide open pass in the flat so that's a wash

jeezus...close this jinx thread before something actually happens to the GOAT

Did anyone point out that Dilfer won a SB, so its conceivable any mediocre/journeyman QB can win one with a historically great defense?

Historical Note: Dilfer was the first starting quarterback to be released after a Super Bowl win.
