Patriots re-sign Danny Shelton

So, that leaves us with only two major losses that don't have significant replacements: Gronk and Trent Brown. One could argue that Wynn replaces Brown (or some combination of veldheer/wynn), but there's questions there. Gronk is irreplaceable, so the fix there will have to be an offensive philosophy shift.

But Bennett takes Flowers role and Pennel takes Malcolm Brown's role. Shelton is back and I have to believe one of Thomas/Gordon/Harris/Harry is going to take Hogan's. Is there any other major player from last year's team that's gone that I'm missing?

While being stacked and potent at every position is almost no longer possible given the underlying framework of the NFL system, if a team can achieve a fairly decent level at every positional grouping to go with a top QB and a few top tier skill positions?? IMHO this is about as good as can be expected for off season team building. And, again IMHO, the Patriots have now achieved this level with the exception of TE (I'm more confident in the LT/OL than some). Yet even at TE, while Gronk isn't going to be replaced, ASJ stats suggest he can definitely block and he's hit a 50 catch season on a crappy team (though his yards per catch was anemic). And if Watson has some left in the tank he definitely has proven pure TE ability. So at least TE has tangible hope for decency (we'll see).

Of course this is on paper. How it translates to actual games is TBD and subject to change. Yet I can't remember the last time the pre-camp Patriots had such few very concerning question marks. On the contrary, right now the big question marks are more about what players have to be cut(or traded etc). I'm certainly in favor of these type question marks versus the question marks of some seasons past .

It’s fairly remarkable, considering the fact that there were a good number of holes just a couple of months ago. Of course, that sounds funny coming from a SB winning fan base, but I think most of us were in agreement that it was one of the more crucial drafts that we’ve had in awhile.

With any luck, they’ll parlay the 2019 and 2020 drafts into a solid base for the future. Like you suggested, how it looks on paper doesn’t always carry over to the field, but I think they did a good job of addressing many of the weaknesses that were concerning us.

Unfortunately, the key is always going to be how they address (or progress) the QB position. We’ll have to see how Stidham looks, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see them take another shot with some of the draft capital they have in 2020. At the moment, I believe that it’s looking like a first, two seconds, and three thirds. In the meantime, I think they retooled this roster pretty nicely as it pertains to having a couple more shots while Tom is still here.

On paper this is one of the strongest teams that I can remember, they are loaded at just about every position.. there is a drop off at TE, but bigger receivers may offset par of this. Trent Brown left but Wynn and Veldheer may fill that void.

As the war of attrition begins, TC and preseason looms large prior to September 8..

Then comes 2020 with 14 draft picks I believe and a lot of cap space, what a freaking ride this is and has been.. .

And Bill agreed with them by sitting him for some games...Shelton did perform better afterwards, including the POs, so it seemed that the message was received how Bill wanted it received.

Shelton is now in direct competition with David Parry for the backup space-eating DT role behind Pennel (with Butler, Cowart & Kamala competing for the backup disruptive DT role behind Guy). Good luck and good health to all of them; and may the better men win.

I agree with that. I guess it would just come down to, do I feel 100% comfortable having to answer that question two seasons in a row with a different answer? Of course, I also should probably shut up and trust Dante at this point

My hope is the contract is not "safe" enough for him to show up unmotivated, but then again the contract year didn't make him play with his hair on fire last year either. He had some good snaps in a limited role in the playoffs. Hopefully he either builds off of that and maintains a niche role, or some unknown UDFA or other signing makes a surprise splash at which point we cut him loose again. Depth is good with big fellas.

Not really.
Last year at this time we had Cannon, Waddle, Wynn, and Trent Brown (though a complete unknown at LT).
This year we have Cannon, Wynn (recovering from an Achilles tendon tear), Cajuste (also recovering from injuries that prevented him from performing ALL workout drills except bench press), and a breaking-down (if not broken-down) Veldheer.
Big difference, or at least to me it is.

It's got to be short money - remember, Malcom Brown just signed for 3/15 elsewhere. They're not the same player, obviously, but I'd argue that the way the Pats' DL is currently constituted, Shelton is a more valuable piece than Brown would be.
