Patriots getting the band back together, sign Jamie Collins

Apologies to @TheRainMaker, who I gave incorrect information to. Since it was a heavily backloaded deal, Thomas still had a sizable 8.8m dollar dead cap hit. Thanks, RW.
When you look at the 1000s of contracts BB has done, sure there have been some deals that just didn't work out but from a cap hit standpoint they've always been manageable if they needed to move on from the player.

In that regard the Thomas deal was an outlier. Clearly he wanted him and downside be damned he was going to get him

They should build a wall around Ohio

Eyes will be on Jamie and every fan will scrutinize which gap he was responsible for and what he did - including myself as I do think he tried to be Batman one too many times.

Media and the fan mob are unlikely to be fair (shocking! :)). Obviously Collins will make some mistakes, however, IMHO it's the 'why' he makes the mistakes that'll be the telling part. If his motor is high and he's doing(trying to do) what BB & staff expect -- he simply screwed it up -- this is a good indicator the Collins of past concern is not Collins 2019. And the ultimate indicator will be snap count. If BB&staff are keeping him out there for a high % of snaps into the 2nd half of the season?? Likely a solid indication he's 'getting it done' (though the much less attractive reason could be we're thin at LB due to injury)

Are players not always paid according to expected performance? The concept of "overpaying" arises when actual performance fails to match expectations.

They are paid in accordance to what they have shown they can do to that point, it would be impossible to know what they will do in the future as many factors go into that. The Thomas signing surprised most as he was the top rated defender in that free agency, and NE fans were extremely excited about it. There is no way that Belichick could have known that he would turn into a diva once he got paid.

To get paid by bb you need to have these boxes checked:

1.) superior player at your position as it relates to our system. Not only assignment sound, but a playmaker.
2.) be a positive force in the locker room.
3.) be totally bought into the patriot way.

Hightower, McCourty, and mason meet all 3.

Ps: when Chung was here the first time, bb was not using him correctly in our defense. When bb bought him back and put him in his current role, then he started to excel for us,

Agreed, although we’ve seen situations where a player checks all of the boxes and is still not retained.

Flowers is the most recent example.

Age plays a role as well. Cant be old (except if you are Tom)

Paid does not mean overpaid. Flowers, QED.

money is still the #1 factor

I would keep Roberts (and only 4 DE's). The question is how much we need a 5th LB when we usually have 2 LB's on the field.

We have Van Noy, Hightower, Collins and Bentley. It would seem that either Bentley or Roberts would get almost no reps, and may not even be active.

Agree. Roberts isn't going anywhere. He's good, cheap and young

Agree.

I see High and KVN playing a lot on the Edge this year.

Rivers is in trouble.

More like slow-as-peas Dean Pees was playing Chung wrong as a free safety instead of as an in-the-box strong safety. That plus the idiotic Dean Pees defense where we played corners 20 yards off the line of scrimmage for about 4 straight years....

I dunno if the timing agrees with this. We had Chung from 2009 to 2012, and Pees was only with the team the first of those years. I also remember him not being all that bad until 2012, when the wheels fell completely off. His improvement in his second stint here was undeniably a usage thing though (and BB has said as much).

  1. Pees was a fine defensive coordinator.
  2. Chung's problem was evident from the beginning. If some of us could see it, the Patriots, and therefore BB, could see it. So the blame for Chung's early struggles goes to Chung and BB, not to the underling who wasn't even around for much of that time period.
  3. The team played off at the corners because the personnel dictated it.

Getting back to Collins for a second. It will be interesting to see WHICH Jaime Collins we get when TC opens. Will it be the bulked up Jaime, ready for time coming off the edge or A gap blitzes. OR the lithe Jaime, ready to run the field sideline to sideline, and be a primarily a coverage demon. Or maybe to quote a "starlord"....a little bit of both. ;)

Collins is good but he doesn't crack that list. Yet. With another season like 2018, Kyle Van Noy sneaks in there somewhere. He was such a key guy last year.

Ran into KVY today at Wegman's in Westwood. Told him I hope that he was here to stay. He said "Me too!" He seemed pretty sincere about staying.

Flowers said the same though.
