Patriots 53 man roster post draft

1) If DT starts on PUP, AND Gordon starts on suspension, I'm fine with Edelman Harry, and 2 of Dorsett/Inman/Harris.

2) Patriots Select Guard/Center Hjalte Froholdt With 118th Pick In 2019 NFL Draft

Froholdt has started at center before, as has Veldheer.

3) No, I don't expect Rivers to make the 53. Injuries really hurt a youngsters chances of developing.

4) Bolden is a lock.

5) Yes, Sam has to beat out King for a LB/ST roster spot. He'll be given every opportunity. Again, spending your rookie year on IR is almost a kiss of death on the patriots. But Sam will have a shot.

6) I believe that Obiwan has to beat out Brooks or Dawson for a roster spot. Alternatively, he can simply be the next man up if one of the DB's is injured before the season starts (likely).

I just don't see how Donkey Thomas can avoid starting the season on PUP.

No backup Center?

The Derek Rivers Experiment finished already?

I am really Really hoping that both Christian Sam & ObiWan are given every reasonable chance to supplant the Brandons on STs.

I guess it depends if we want to carry 4 or 5 DEs. If it's 5 I see Rivers making the roster. If it's 4 he would need to beat out Simon which isn't expected at this point unless they count Simon or Winovich as linebackers as well.

It makes no difference if you "count" Simon and/or Winovich as linebackers, unless you think that Rivers is beating out Van Noy or Hightower or Bentley. They won't beat out Roberts for an inside run-stopping ILB.

For me, I start with 9 DB's and 3 STers (Brooks, Ebner and King). Since I tend to "balance" the offense and defense, at least to start, that leaves 13 roster spots for the front six.

THE FRONT SIX (13)
DT (4) Pennell, Guy, Butler, another biggie (Shelton?)
DE/EDGE (4) Bennett, Winovich, Wise, Simon
LB (4) Van Noy, Hightower, Bentley, Roberts
LB/ST (1) Calhoun

DEFENSIVE BACKS (9)
CB (6) Gilmore, Jackson, McCourty, Williams, Jones, Dawson
S (3) McCourty, Chung, Harmon

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)
ST (3) King, Brooks, Ebner

BOTTOM LINE
Anyone else will need to beat out one of the above, or make the 53 after injuries.

I suspect that if everyone is healthy the week before the final cut, we will trade a DB. However, I'm fine with what we have (once we sign a DT or two, one expected to make the 53 and an insurance player).

Yeah, Rivers is my 5th DE too, but I would still be surprised and disappointed if he were waived during a pre-season in which he is healthy.

Unless shown otherwise, I will continue to maintain/believe/hope that all 3 of Rivers, Sam & ObiWan can offer more as combined LOS/STs players than 3 of Bolden/King/Ebner/Brooks. Naturally, the formers have to give it everything they have in order to unseat the latters.

Hope is a good thing. But you have the competition correctly. As an aside, I don't think that any of the would three replace Bolden (our St blocker, #5 RB and backup KR).

Obi needs to beat out Brooks who has been guaranteed $1.4M
Rivers needs to beat out Ebner or King (or Calhoun)
Sam needs to beat out Ebner or King (or Calhoun)

BTW, I suspect that Davis may be ahead of Rivers in the path to get a roster spot.

IT'S GREAT TO BE A PATRIOT FAN and to be discussing who will compete for the bottom 5 spots on the roster!

nice, I like it but for Hoyer, I think they go with two QBs and Hoyer being on the shadow roster. I think Mcnown would be the first QB on a needy teams board in Sept.

I think Cowart will stay over Parry

1) I hope that we are able to cut Hoyer.
2) I expect to keep a 3rd TE (ASJ).
3) Karras is very vulnerable. Froholdt has lots of experience as a starting center, and Veldheer can also play center.
4) I expect us to sign a DT; I presume the Parry is a placeholder.
5) I have Calhoun over Hall as a ST/5thLB. The 5th LB is primarily a ST position.

BOTTOM LINE
OUT: Karras, Parry, Hall
IN: ASJ, Shelton, Calhoun
hope: to cut Hoyer

To agree on 50 players is a lot at this point.

Post-Jamie Collins signing projection:

QB (3) T.Brady, B.Hoyer, J.Stidham
- Bill won't trust Stidham to be Brady's only backup, and I don't blame him either;

RB (5) J.Develin, J.White, R.Burkhead, S.Michel, D.Harris
- I just don't see any way that Bolden survives the cut unless injuries happen;

WR (4) J.Edelman, P.Dorsett, N.Harry, D.Inman
- Nobody else worthy enough to force Bill's hand here, unless Meyers really lights it up;

TE (3) B.Watson, A.Seferian-Jenkins, S.Anderson
- Mister Anderson wins battle for #3 TE, as he should;

C (2) D.Andrews, H.Froholdt
G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, T.Karras
T (4) M.Cannon, I.Wynn, J.Veldheer, Y.Cajuste
- Karras wins battle for #9 OLman;

DE (5) M.Bennett, D.Wise, J.Simon, C.Winovich, D.Rivers
DT (4) L.Guy, M.Pennel, A.Butler, D.Shelton
- Rivers gets one more chance, and Danny Shelton re-signs as the #4 DT;

ILB(2) D.Hightower, J.Bentley
OLB(3) K.VanNoy, J.Collins, C.Sam
- Sam has the TC of his life and replaces both Roberts at LB and King as STer;

CB (6) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Williams, J.Jones, J.Jackson, D.Dawson

SS (2) P.Chung, O.Melifonwu
FS (3) D.McCourty, D.Harmon, T.Brooks
- ObiWan's potential beats out Ebner's experience, and John Simon becomes Punt Protector;

ST (4) S.Gostkowski, J.Bailey, J.Cardona, M.Slater

Here is my early projection. If everyone stays healthy then there will be some difficult cuts, but we all know that's unlikely.

QB: Brady, Hoyer (2) - I think they would love for Stidham to have a camp that makes Hoyer dispensable but you can't leave him off the roster yet. I think they find a way for Stidham to have the Foxborough flu come September and redshirt him year 1.

RB: Michel, White, Burkhead, Harris, Bolden (5)

FB: Develin (1)

WR: Harry, Edelman, Dorsett, Inman, Meyers, Slater (6): Thomas will start on PUP with the potential to strengthen this group and kick one off the roster once he returns. We don't really have a slot back up if Edelman goes down so Meyers makes it for that role and as a key special teams guy.

OL: Wynn, Veldheer, Cannon, Mason, Thuney, Andrews, Froholdt, Karras (8). Cahuste starts the year on PUP.

TE: Watson, LaCosse, Izzo (3). Really hard to rank the TEs. Watson is the only lock for me. They gave LaCosse more money than ASJ and they seemingly like Izzo so I'll go with these 3 for now.

Total: 25

DT: Guy, Pennel, Butler, Cowart (4) Certainly think Cowart could get cut but as a 5th rounder I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

DE: Bennett, Wise, Winovich, Simon, Rivers (5): I think there is a chance Rivers gets cut but I'll keep him for now.

LB: Hightower, Van Noy, Collins, Bentley, King (5): Whoever wins that last spot will need to a key special teams contributor. I forget whether Roberts is one.

CB: Gilmore, McCourty, Dawson, Jones, Jackson, Williams, Crossen (7). This group is loaded. Could see one of these guys go on IR or start on PUP. Or could also see a trade.

S: McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Brooks (4). Brooks will make the team and potentially take Ebner's spot. Obi's spot seemingly taken by Williams.

Total: 25

Specialists: Gostkowski, Bailey, Cardona (3).

Brooks and Bolden have been brought on as key special teamers, which potentially means Ebner, King etc may be at threat. As always we will see 3 or 3 players start on PUP and a number land on IR.

Edit: Time to add King back on it seems....Sam to drop off.

No matter who makes this team the 2019 seems deeper and more versatile than I have seen in a long time, the concept of "schematic flexibility" may become part of our banter.

FWIW not sure Hoyer will be #2, and it may be time to move on with either Ettling or Stidham assuming his role. Consider the source but Ettling apparently is making progress, or at least WEEI thinks he was in January..

The other Patriots quarterback you should be paying attention to

I had a really hard time picking someone to cut for Collins; eventually landed on Stidham, but we all know someone's going on PUP or IR and this won't be an issue.

Patsfans.com cuts Bolden, Ebner and King every year but they just keep collecting rings.

Brandon King's a lock now.

Boldin isn't going anywhere, either. Look at his contract.
