All the relevant comments have been laid out there for us. Let me consolidate them.

On the plus side.

1. If this is half as successful as the last time we brought back a prodigal son, it's a no brainer.

The last time the Patriots brought in a prodigal son, Brandon Spikes rolled his car on 495.

Go look at my posting history about Collins, rather than trying to lump me in with "everyone".

@DefiantGoose, you can borrow my hardbound copy of “The Great Posts of Deus”...

It’s a page turner!

(j/k deus ol’ buddy :) )

Funny I posted when he left that he hated it here (the area) ... somebody who was tight with him was heard saying it. I guess the area looks a bit better now that he realizes it's a business ... just play hard for your team and the fans. You retire to the area you love. You play where the fit and money are right.

Hey, no one tackled a guy 4 yards downfield better than Mayo.

Which shows according to Patsfans Tackles are as overrated as Sacks.

Can’t wait to see Collins and Chung double team Watson in practice.

Good thing Mayo retired because that's all he was good at too.:)

Considering from 2009 to 2012 aside from VW the front 7 was a bag of ****. If Mayo didn't make those tackles 4yds downfield they would have allowed 30ppg

Love the Roster competition a stiff like Derek Rivers ain't getting a spot by default I hope he brings it.

the media thought he was pretty good

I wouldn't hate bringing him back for the right price. Add him in at LB and that allows Hightower to play more on the DL. It's kind of a round about way of adding DL depth more than anything else IMO.

Also the one thing I still don't like this D doing is covering RBs out of the backfield. Collins can do that better than anyone on the roster.

Mayo was a very good LBer on an average to poor defense

I had no idea he was freelancing until after he was traded and I read about and watched videos pointing it out. The defense certainly played better after he left.

My understanding was that he was doing this to put up better numbers in a contract year to get a big contract. Does anyone know if this was a problem in prior years?

It seems to me that problem is correctable especially now that he has been around the block and been humbled. I hope he returns. We need more talent at linebacker and he certainly does have talent.

Well, he's back. I just hope it's as a situational player rather than a front line guy.

Collins is an athletic freak. Period.

Are we forgetting he could do things like this with that athleticism? In fact the NFL had to BAN this play because guys like Collins were too good at it, also for safety reasons.

Look Chung came back and was better the 2nd time around.

If Collins is willing to swallow his pride and 'do his job' he could end up an excellent pickup for the Pats.

Low risk/high upside signing. I like it.

The #Patriots have indeed signed Jamie Collins according to league source (@RapSheet was on it first). The linebacker will be present for some on-field work on Thursday.
