Report: Bill Belichick to serve as Patriots defensive play caller

Cmon Guys. Didn't you read the first line of the OP. "according to BEN VOLIN". That's where I stopped reading and so should have you. You and I BOTH know that the only reporter with fewer contacts within the Pats organization is Ron Borges.

This is typical Volin BS. All you need to do is see a legitimately POSSIBLE situation and then present it as an "inside information" and write about like it's a fact, then wait for the clicks and retweets to happen. This is what Volin does ALL the time. Christ WE have better sources within the Pats organization than he does as WELL as better insights into the Patriots.

Volin is the only guy I know who wins the "keen sense of the obvious" award on a weekly basis. He's been doing the job for years and still asks the dumbest questions at whatever presser is going on. He is simply a LAZY reporter to adds nothing of value to whoever his readers might still be. On a beat where there are so many harder working guys who give us SO much more Volin stands out as a slacker going thru the motions.

Now COULD BB be the signal caller this year. It's POSSIBLE. Its something we have talked about on this board almost from the day Schianno left. When was that, 2 months ago? It's old news at best, yet Volin writes about it like he got a scoop.

MAN, that guy pisses me off (in case you hadn't noticed)

All I'm saying is, keep an eye on Steve Belichick this season. I honestly think BB's trying to groom him to take over, first defensive duties then take over as HC and kick himself upstars as GM. And I think this is like year 7 of a 10 year plan to get him there

Steve Belichick working for Jonathan Kraft has some nice synergy to it, but I agree with @italian pat patriot that this will be Josh's HC job.

Though SB calling the defensive plays is fun to think about.

Good for the defense, hopefully not too bad for the big picture stuff that he usually has been doing.

I thought Borges lost his job after the Fake Don Yee scandal.

Isn't BB the guy whose game plan from SB XXV when he was a D coordinator for the Giants and is forever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of fame??

Bill Belichick’s Super Bowl XXV Game Plan

He may start this way if "trolling volin" is right, but will probably acquiesce some the responsibilities as the season progresses.. this whole thread is based on what a local sports scribe wrote to justify his existence during the offseason..

I prefer BB not being the Andy Reid of defense and managing the entire team and the whole 60 minutes on gameday.

Delegate responsiblity.

Hopefully this is just business as usual with BB formulating the defensive game plan and interjecting from time to time on Sunday.

Rex Ryan

It's not too late.

I approve this hiring

If I recall BB was a pretty good Defensive Coordinator? Does anyone have any insight?

He's outstanding when he has Lawrence Taylor... :D

(Just being a jerk...)

Not a crazy theory, but the only thing that makes me pause is the timing. I can't imagine BB wanting to take the reigns as defensive signal caller for more than one year in a go. I think that's why they brought in Schiano, to bridge the gap. But if Steve were going to be the DC-in-waiting to take the mantle (or the unofficial mantle, like MP and Flores did for a year), I would think they'd have given him a little more THIS year to build up to it. He was safeties coach last year, and they've added someone as the DBs coach along side him. Seems like if he was ready in a year or so to take over at DC, he'd just be coaching the whole secondary this year.

I'm probably reading into it too much though. I just think he's 2-3 years away from that opportunity, and I doubt BB will be the de facto DC for that long.

Not convinced BB is actually gonna be the signal caller. Volin is likely leaping to conclusions based on the fact that Flores is gone and BB has made no massive public effort to replace him.

Remembering that Flores himself was something of an unofficial defensive coordinator to begin with. I mean we all know he did the work but I don't think he was ever actually given the job. So this is not by any means the first time BB is going into the season without a proper DC.

The only difference this time is we haven't been given a clear idea of who the unofficial DC is this time. Which makes me wonder if BB wants it to be Steve and is just waiting until the preseason news cycles to slip it past the media's noses.

Sooner or later someone's going to wind up being the first-among-equals among the defensive coaches and that guy will be the de facto DC. From where I'm sitting, Steve has as good a chance as anyone to claim that spot and if Bill leaves it open to fight for, that gives Steve the chance to earn it legitimately

Leaving a job title requiring an experienced defensive coach, wide open so your son, an experienced defensive coach, can fight in the scrum for it, and prove that he's earned the position on his own merits, is as good a way as I can think of to diffuse the charges of nepotism that might fall out if he just gave his son the job.

If Im on the Pats staff, with more experience, and the son of the HoFer gets the nod before me, Id be pissed. Think of you personally

I dont think anyone can definitely separate the credit to each part fairly, so i cant say he is or isn't doing great. I will say that coaching DMc, Chung and Harmon, who have been here forever, sounds like its a bit easier than what Scar does in the O-Line year after year, for example

Anyway, I hope he's half as good as his dad, he'd still be the best in the league

This is gonna suck. Bill the DC is gonna kill Bill the HC

Steve Belichick is literally the only defensive coach currently listed on the Patriots' website

Flo literally wiped out our defensive coaching structure with the people he took with him. He was the linebackers' coach, I think he took the CB coach with him. I think we've hired OJ Mayo and Brian Belichick to coaching roles since the website was updated, so it's not quire as bare as all that, but that's still a bit startling.

Bottom line it's gonna be Steve and a bunch of relatively new faces next year and Steve is going to have to play an expanded role whether Bill likes it or not.

I didn't realize that when I started talking about this but now it's pretty clear that there's NO reason to make a statement or take any action here. Once the external candidate (Schiano) backed out, there's no competition. Steve Belichick is already the unofficial DC.

Belichick isn’t going to give Stephen Belichick the DC job until he has more than earned it.

Did you or did you not see the word "unofficial?"

it's probably gonna be like Flores last year. Not actually the DC, but doing all the work of a DC while Belichick puts his stamp on things.

BB has a large precedent for playing things that way and you're right, he's gonna play it like that especially with his son, make him do the work, earn the job, and only then give it to him.
