Last season it was Boston and NY...then the Caps won The Cup. I think right now it's Boston and Washington, unless Boston wins The Cup then maybe next season it will be Boston &...Boston?

it's just weird to me when fans do that..

The only one that makes sense would be say a Sox/Giants fan because of the history before the Pats came into existence... other than that I just don't get it

Yea my dad is in his mid-70s and hes a NY Giants fan. You see that with the older folks. It's the team he grew up with in the 50s and 60s and didn't care much for the Pats when he was a college kid. Hes a Celtics, Sox Bruins fan. He roots for the Pats but they are not his first team.

Meh, there's millions of them like that. It's the price of success. What's embarrassing is the pink hats quietly eating their brie in the Gillette club seats instead of making some damn noise as an opponent brings their offense to the line. They're actually from here and their presence keeps a real fan from being in that seat.

I fall in the half generation in between you and your Dad. My father and grandfather were hardcore Giants fans, their games were what was broadcast in New England. They stayed Giants fans to their graves, real fans don't abandon their team. Hell, '52 was the Braves last season in Boston but the games were still being broadcast on the radio here into the 60's and my Dad would listen to them over the Sox. Among my earliest lasting sports memories was my father taking me with him on the 'football train' to NY to see the Giants play. But I'm a Townie and presented with a local football team the natural NY sports hatred made me a Pats fan waiting to happen. My Dad had a lot of contempt for the Sullivans but he understood the conflict in a Boston kid raised to despise the Yanks, Knicks and Rangers when it came to rooting for a NY football team and accepted that his sons would be Pats fans. He didn't like it but he understood it.

Thanks for your answer. We see this very differently. To me, it makes perfect sense that someone would like Celts/Yankees. It's two dominant franchises that have spent decades at a time being ahead of the curve, and that have been willing to do almost anything to win. And, in general, I don't see why you'd be pinning your fandom on team location. Do you cheer only for Boston area golfers and tennis players?

I'm a Red Sox fan because I was such a big fan of the Rice/Lynn/Evans outfield, and hated Reggie Jackson so much, when I was forming my allegiances. I'm a Bruins fan because of the greatness of Bobby Orr, Fred Cusick and Johnny Pierson, the existence of channel 38, Providence College hockey camp, and mini one-on-one. I'm a Celtics fan because of, well, pretty much everything prior to the two player deaths (Bias, Lewis). Because I didn't start following football as early as I started following the other sports, I'm a Patriots fan mostly because the Oilers weren't on TV enough during the Earl Campbell years, and "Favorite player" lost out to "local team that's easy to follow and has a field that's a great place to tailgate". But, if the Oilers had been in New York, I'd probably have ended up as a lifelong Oilers fan.

That's fine, I understand not everyone has my POV and I understand yours.

I just feel if you are lucky enough to have pro sports teams that represent your area, then you should root for them. Don't give 2 craps about golf or tennis, so I can't help you there. Millions of people would kill to have what we have in this area, so when someone turns their back on a team to root for another (especially from another rival city, like the previously mentioned Celtics Yankees fan) it just seems so phony to me.

As I said, you don’t know me or my situation. When I moved to Washington, the Rangers and Caps were not in the same division. Besides, Rangers fans mostly hated the Devils and Islanders - Washington fans they could care less about.

And people of my generation tend to move around quite a bit. Not unusual at all to develop a liking for the local team while still liking your childhood team if they are not hated rivals.
