Jake Bequette?

Winovich showed more in that 30 second twitter highlights video than Bequette ever showed. I remember watching Bequette college highlights wondering what exactly he did that made him a good pick.

I really like the pick. He more than maybe any Edge player this draft except perhaps guys taken in the top 10 is going to be able to come in and play immediately. As I've said, I don't think he'll every be a star and his ceiling is mostly reached already. However getting a guy you pretty much know can play in this league and contribute as a decent starter at pick 77 is pretty good for sure. The DL was a big spot of need and they addressed it with this pick.

I didn't focus on Winovich as much as I should have pre-draft, because I fell into the "replacement" trap. The Patriots had to "replace" Trey Flowers, so I spent a lot of time looking at similar-style players. D'oh. If instead you just look at what Winovich brings to the table and how that could improve the roster, he leaps out.

He had the fastest 10-yard split and shuttle and 2nd-fastest cone time of any DE in the draft. Even among tight ends, only "athletic freak" Noah Fant rivaled his quickness times. He's a really interesting weapon, and should be hard for mobile QBs to escape from.

He may not be a 7 - 9 sack player, but he should provide strong, consistent play against the run while still providing pressure in the pass rush. He's refined with his hands and has underrated explosiveness.

I don't think we can say anyone entering the league as a rookie has reached their ceiling unless you're talking purely from a physical standpoint.

He won't get much faster or jump much higher but he can improve his technique, understanding of the game, his role etc... So if he's a " student of the game " type guy then I'd say he'll improve over the next few years or in other words we won't see his ceiling for a few years.

I guess we'll know more in a year or two.

Big thing I like from this kid is that while the physical tools are definitely there, he appears to have a strong emotional toolset too. That's important. This seems to be one of those kids who you don't have to worry about the mental and emotional aspects of the game. He'll have a tough series then pop right back up and be ready to go the next one. come in with a mountain of energy and spend the game working to infect others with his enthusiasm. Looks very much like a future glue guy and leader of the defense. That's almost as important as the physical gifts, which are also fairly impressive.

I think he will be significantly better than Wise. Winovich is a serious athlete. Absolute steal at 77.

I think it is really hard to make that claim. Wise came in and really shocked people with his knack for getting to the QB sans tremendous athleticism. Wise had a "down" year last year, but he also struggled with an ankle injury for most of the year.

I think of players like Ninkovich, Edelman, Bruschi etc..

I don't have a problem with people using the terms " upside " or " ceiling " but don't understand how we could say a player has already reached it before playing a single snap in the NFL because I think NFL success depends on much more than just physical traits.

I was thinking similar things. Though I think eventually, he will be a good NFL DE in his own right, both as a pass rusher and run defender. His measurables in college were a lot better than Flowers.

It all comes down to what is he willing to do as a player. Is he willing to do everything to become great. A lot of players have incredible measurables, but never do anything with them, where as other players like Flowers, didn't give a **** about his combine numbers, he cared about becoming a really good player.

It's funny you mentioned his measurables comparable to TEs, he actually came to Michigan as a TE. Makes you go hmmm. Will he also be a pass catcher ala Vrabel ? Doesn't have the height like Vrabel, but he might have the hands.
