Pats Sign Austin Seferian-Jenkins

It sounded like Jordon Matthews was working out pretty good until he got hurt.
Agreed, but I think they could’ve had him after he healed last year, and they surely could’ve had him this year, but they chose to hold off and go in a different direction.

I had some pretty high hopes for Matthews, too. I still think that he would’ve done well here, had it not been for the injury. He was cheap, too.

Another low risk possible reward signing, pair him with a early TE draft pick and although they may not be "Gronkish" that combo is better than what the Pats had at the break of dawn yesterday....

If he does not make the team, i.e. TC fodder, minimal cost to the Pats..

Or better still #12 and Josh resurrect his career, and all of a sudden he becomes a hot commodity next season and we get another 3rd rounder in 2021...

Good to know. I’ll put you down as someone who believes <30 receiving yards a game for a TE is VERY GOOD.
More evidence you just dont understand the game.

This is a “throw it at the wall and see if it sticks” move. Nothing more, nothing less. He’ll probably suck as per usual but it’s a one year deal and hopefully they can snag a TE like Hockensen or Fant in the draft if they fall and relegate him to TE2 duty.

Yeah really.

Fail Larry

Jenkins is recently coming off consecutive + 64% catch rate seasons. He is not just reeling in 5 yard dump off passes. 36% of his receptions were mid range in 2017. Austin Seferian-Jenkins | Football Outsiders

Jenkins has played with teams with a fluctuating QB position. 2017 with the Jets who drafted a QB in 2018. 2018 with the Jags who are moving on from Bortles, Tampa Bay and a cast of QBs coming and going. Since 2015 Winston is 22 - 33. He is not an NFL QB.

Jenkins is landing on a team with the most solid NFL QB that he has ever had. Nobody is expecting Jenkins to be Gronk Larry.

It’s going to take a lifetime if you are going to post pictures of all the players that produced more than 30 yards a game.
I guess you think maroney was VERY GOOD.

You literally are an idiot.
Click the link on the page you posted and it takes you here TIGHT ENDS 2017 | Football Outsiders
Where Jenkins is ranked 51 out of 51 TEs catching 25 or more passes in DYAR.
You link things that prove you are wrong because you don’t understand what you are looking at. And btw only 36% in mid range is exactly a guy rarely getting thrown to down the field as his 7 ypc indicates.

THAT is your argument that he was VERY GOOD in 2017? Oh your stats also show he was 48/51 in DVOA.

Again nothing at all to do with saying he was VERY GOOD in 2017.

Don't really understand the negativity here - well, I do, because it's Patsfans, after all, and New England hasn't figured a way to defeat the Felger virus.

For vet minimum, the Pats just got a vet. Hmm. He's got the size, strength, and speed. He can block and has good hands. Of all the tight ends possible for the Pats in FA this year, I had James as #1 (thought he could be a long-term player here), Cooks as #2, and ASJ as #3.

I don't even know if he'll make the team, of course, but there's no gamble here. He's a camp body, competing for a spot - but right now, this moment, he'd be the TOP of the Patriots' TE depth chart, in terms of experience, ability, and potential.

For vet minimum. Bill is playing with house money here. Great move - great try, even if it doesn't work out.

Prediction: if he stays healthy, he makes the team and contributes at least as much as Allen would have for less than 1/5th the cost.

For every Kyle Van Noy, you'll get a couple of Shea McClellins. This one costs them no picks and as minimal in cap as you can get.

I think you have two camps of negativity.

If the expectation was to sign the next Gronk, you have the crowd on the GDT who suffer from immediate gratification syndrome and ***** about a 24-14 win.

The other crowd is I guess someone like me who doesn't think too highly of ASJ but there might be a chance he can make the team and be a serviceable TE2 (20 catches, 200tds, a few TDs and good run/pass blocking).

It all depends on his attitude and how much of a fit he is in terms of offense. He has the atleticism, size and ability to be a 800yd+ TE. Expecting that would obviously be silly but this is not another JAG / camp body signing imo.

Yeah he's better than a JAG no question.

Sure, but even those in your camp (which is a reasonable attitude, given his track record), would have to admit that the guy is top of the depth chart right now. Allen's departure and the timing of Gronk's retirement had left a pretty bare cupboard.

Im just glad u don't remember me betting on Mitchell having over 1000 yards in his second season, thinking Jordan Matthews would work well here, guessing Dorsett winning the 3rd Wr spot last season and changing my avatar to Josh Gordon literally on the week he got suspended again

I like the way you think!

Hes top of the depth chart but I'm not sure thats a good thing. If he plays like he did w/ the NYJ hes serviceable at best.

I wasn't that high on Allen. Fine blocker but TEs here need to be an option for Tom.

We obviously won't know what their final TE situation is until Week 1 but if they pass on TEs in the draft or potential trade options they will clearly need to land a respectable WR through similar avenues (draft/trade)
