McGinest: thinks Gronk will start the season retired

These former Patriots have a podium but rarely actually talk to the players. Not dismissing the report but questioning if this is anything other than McGinest’s “if it were me” take.

On TV today Willie was saying he thinks Gronk will start the season retired but that he may change his mind and come back late in the season.
This was my pet theory too after the season ended. He would “retire” to get out of training camp and maybe the first 4 weeks or so. I honestly considered it something that would benefit him*and* the team.

That can’t be done. You can’t IR a player who retires. And how do you expect them to get him to redo his contract for the minimum, again when he is retired.
IRing is an alternative to retiring . If he wants to pull a Roger Clemens and show up 1/2 way into the year then keeping him under team control is more desirable

I believe Gronk will be in camp and playing this season. Now, does he and BB work out an arrangement to reduce his playing time at the start of the year...probably not, but possible.

I revised my post with another option. IR him with the DTR, redu his deal for the vet minimum and bonuses for snaps and games active

This is only possible if Gronk is explicitly asking not to play the first half of the season for health purposes, as opposed to actively retiring and then reconsidering. I don't think McGinest is speculating the former. If Gronk held a press conference and announced his retirement, there's no way to IR him.

Agree. I'm basing my proposal on the assumption Gronk doesn't want to play a full season. By IR DTR he can at least work out and be under team control.

If he genuinely wants to retire then there is no possibility for the team to maintain control.

You can’t force him to be IRd. It’s his choice to retire not the teams.

I know. Again my point is if Gronk goes to the team and says he only wants to play 1/2 a season instead of retirement-out of of retirement situation they just rework his deal and IR DTR him.

But they can’t put him on IR without an injury.
And you are saying this gives the patriots control. Why would gronk give up control?

Injury is undisclosed.

If Gronk doesn't want that kind of arrangement then he will be released or traded.

Again this is all predicated on Gronk wanting to only play 1/2 a season and only with the Patriots. If he doesn't, he doesn't.

I don't usually think this way, but "Shut up Willie!"

Gronk needs some fish and lobstah.

Cutting Gronk would be bad optics. Just redo his contract spreading out the money with the assumption that Gronk does not play next season. Pats carry dead money all the time.

Brady will want Gronk back and pester him until he gives in. Im fine with Gronk easing into the season so he is not all banged up at the end.

Certainly draft a TE to learn from one of the best for a year under Gronks wing.

Kraft can help here. Just leak that kielbasa will be served at every team meal & Gronk can't stay away.

I think all of this is Gronks camp trying to create leverage where there is none.

BB will never go for this. You're either all in or you're out.

Granted this would be a stretch but Belichick has made allowances for special players in the past

Yes, with a huge pass catching TE.

You can’t put a guy in IR with an undisclosed injury if there is no injury. Disclosed doesn’t mean exists. You can’t release or trade a guy who retires.

Blame it on his back, neck, arm, knee, achilles...
