Patriots Trade for Michael Bennett

My quote was pretty clear, and my post addressed the idea of Bennett getting a raise in New England.

You're deliberately reading beyond that by ignoring the above portion, likely because of the other thread.

However, it's just about 3 am, and I've got to be out the door early in the morning, so I'm going to try getting some sleep, again. Goodnight.

'3am and you need to be out the door early??? Suggestion: "<cough, cough> hello, I can't make in today, I think I have the swine flu"

Sign Martellus Bennett too? 32 year old TE who has been out of football for a year (but stayed in shape with frequent walks to Panda Express?), had back problems in his last playing season (about half a season) along with looking just slightly faster than grass growing?

I'm thinking BB definitely offers a multi year with guarantees. Of course, ahem, if the Packers will offer to guarantee some of that money while he plays for the Patriots? Different story :)

Let Jack Easterby leave and the whole team goes to hell. Damn you and your fancy handjobs, Kraft.

I had to look up Jack Easterby.
Piety and hanjobs in a two sentence post? You don't find that kind of Internet writing just around the corner... :)

Cut Clayborn and Ebner saves 7m = Bennett
Cap is pretty much the same
Why cut Ebner? Because you can have 3 great STer for less than his cap hit (king/humber/McClellan)

Bring Flowers back

Flowers Tillery Guy Bennett ( Wise/ Anthony Nelson)

There is nothing fancy about Orchids of Asia.
It’s always “fancy” when you order the *old fashioned : double* off the menu, though.

It certainly tops the amateur, rough and dirty, back of the bus handys I was getting in 8th grade, that’s for sure.

It would be nice but it's probably best described as a prayer. Flowers is gonna be offered some pretty choice $$$ from a few other teams. A basement dweller may even throw in the kitchen sink and the sky. Unless Flowers really wants to stay here and will make it, I don't know, say a 10% trim for the PatsFan Drive for 7 and 8 fund, chances are most likely we should start practicing our "Flowers was overrated" posting (along with a "always thought Bennett was the best in the business" post :))

I’ll start a “Flowers was a jag” post the second he leaves

The same folks who saw Bennett for the low character person that he was while he was on other teams now have no problem with him being part of the Patriot Way.

Oh how I miss the days when character mattered.

eh, its about winning a superbowl. Not all of the patriots players have been the highest of character people. If Bill can get him to buy in for a year, go for it.

The “Patriot Way” is about putting your head down, caring about football, and doing your job. It is and was never about “character”.

Mike Reiss says trading for Bennett doesn't mean Flowers is gone.

Article:

Michael Bennett's arrival shouldn't close door on Trey Flowers

IMO it is related to Clayborn, he was good but we could upgrade. If he(Clayborn) is cut it really is 3m dollars for a better overall player.

I would love to keep both. Rotation is key, but let's see how much cap Brady extension will save and others.

Flowers* (Bennett/Draft pick) Bennett (Draf Pick) Guy (Butler) Clayborn(Wise)

KVN / HT /Bentley (draft pick)

Gilmore - JC Jackson -Jason McCourty* - Dawson/JJ - DMcCourty -Chung - Harmon (draft pick)

That is good as 2002/2003 D

Michael Bennett Opens Up About All of It

Excellent article about Michael Bennett in GQ.
I did not know he had three daughters, also just some interesting questions and responses. I just hope he can get along with the coaches and not be a distraction.
If so, I think he will giv ethe Patriots something they have not had in a long time.

Kinda my mindset. He was really slow and oft banged up his last few seasons in the league. So I'm unsure about this one.

It's weird people still think it is. Posters will say **** like "Belichick would NEVER acquire a player who did X" only for Belichick to promptly acquire a player who did X. He's not stupid, these guys aren't his friends, he's just trying to win football games.

Adrian Clayborn had his Issues before his benching played much better after it. Remember it was his First year in the system sometimes people play better in year two. Remember Stephen Gilmore struggled in year one: then Pro Bowler in year two. Clayborn can Rush and he gets plenty pressures. Could Bennett/Clayborn = Trey Flowers?? I wouldn't be so quick to run him out of Dodge. Clayborn is still a bargain at that price pass rushers don't come cheap.

I do find all the gushing over this move kinda funny. This guy is a loser.

I root for the laundry in the end, but I definitely can't root for this lying POS.

I’m thinking the Patriots will do a minor adjustment to Bennett’s contract which will make him happy and lower his 2019 cap. They’ll cut him a bonus check for $ 6 million while lowering his salary to the vet minimum. Bennett will get his money upfront and the Patriots will lower his 2019 cap hit from $7 million to $4 million.

There’s a lot of handwringing in this thread and others regarding the Patriots cap situation. When you evaluate a team’s cap condition, you should look beyond just the current year figure but also look at their cap commitments over the next couple of seasons as well. The Patriots are in good cap shape in 2020 and 2021 even considering the effect of the inevitable Brady extension. There are plenty of ways to essentially borrow cap space from those years. So, while you don’t want to pay more than value for any player, the Patriots have more than enough cap flexibility to make moves to keep valuable free agents and make further moves to improve the team.

They also are likely to add incentives, so that he can earn his raise.
