NFL 2010s All-Decade Team

Also the locks other than Brady and Gronk: Watt, Donald, Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman, Bobby Wagner, Joe Thomas, Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, Von Miller and I'm probably forgetting somebody else.

Adrian Peterson. Luke Kuechly. Marshal Yanda. Johnny Hekker.

Also, Cordarelle Patterson is probably the All-2010 KR.

I think mine looks like this with a year to go... (Second team is after the slash; it generally considers longevity as well as peak so for example Pat Willis was a better player than Navorro Bowman both at their peak and careerwise but Bowman played his entire career in this decade, and Willis retired fairly early. so Bowman gets the first team nod)..

Also a * to denote players who would've made either first or second all-2000s team

QB: T.Brady* / D.Brees
RB: A.Peterson, L.McCoy / L.Bell, M.Forte
WR: C.Johnson, J.Jones, A.Brown / B.Marshall, D.Hopkins, A.Green
SLOT: L.Fitzgerald* / J.Edelman
TE: R.Gronkowski / J.Graham
OT: J.Thomas, T.Smith / A.Whitworth, J.Peters
OG: M.Yanda, Z.Martin / J.Evans, D.DeCastro
C: J.Kelce / R.Kalil

EDGE: J.Watt, K.Mack, V.Miller / C.Wake, J.Peppers*, C.Campbell
DT: A.Donald, G.Atkins / F.Cox, G.McCoy
LB: L.Kuechly, B.Wagner, N.Bowman / D.Hightower, P.Willis, L.David
CB: R.Sherman, D.Revis, P.Peterson / C.Harris, A.Talib, J.Joseph
S: E.Thomas, E.Berry / E.Reed*, E.Weddle

K: J.Tucker / S.Gostkowski
P: J.Hekker / S.Lechler
KR: C.Patterson / J.Jones
PR: D.Sproles / J.Edelman
ST: M.Slater / J.Bethel

Coach: B.Belichick / P.Carroll

2 full decades of dominance......This is not just a mere dynasty, this is a super dynasty or a dynasty times 2.

QB2 is an interesting one. How are you reasoning Brees here? I’m not saying I don’t agree with it, but objectively:
  • Rodgers has a Super Bowl win and a Super Bowl MVP. Brees does not, as that was 2009, a year before the decade.
  • Rodgers has two MVPs; Brees has zero.
  • Rodgers has two first team all-pros and one-second team-all pro. Brees has two second team all-pros.
  • Rodgers has better team success than Brees overall by win-loss percentage, playoff appearances (7-5) and division titles (5-3).
  • Rodgers is statistically superior by a fairly large margin, as he has amassed the best passer rating and TD:INT ratio of all-time during this decade. Brees is impressive in his cumulative stats, but I don’t see how Brees is boosted by statistical analysis over Rodgers.

Agree that Dante Hightower should be somewhete on the list. 3 rings, 5 bowl appearances.

It's closer than I thought once I got into the numbers.

Although Rodgers has the better win percentage but he has less wins. He's been far less durable which has kept the Packers out of the playoffs. Rodgers has also benefited like Manning from a media bias where they give him the awards if it's close. I do give Rodgers a lot of extra credit for playing outdoors and dock Brees in this regard.

Since 2010 Rodgers is also 5-6 in the playoffs and Brees 4-4. Rodgers numbers in these games don't tell the story on how badly he played in a lot of these games. They were effectively blown out in 4 of them and he got a lot of garbage numbers. The Seattle 2014 he was horrible and their defense set them up for every point they did score.

Brees conversely has played well to great in every game but has had some bad luck. The last two years the game was won and he lost on a freak play and a bad call. Twice he lost in Seattle in close games where he played pretty well a place where Rodgers played awful.

2010 was a career year for Rodgers and it pushes him over the top most likely along with the media bias but I feel like the bulk of the decade Brees has played better.

I also think the thing that bothers me about Rodgers the more I've watched him is he'll take a sack to protect his passer rating and those negative yards affect the team.

That's fair. I could be convinced to go with Rodgers there. It's also notable that Brees has shown a history of falling apart in big spots in this decade. I suspect I was influenced by recency bias, since Rodgers has had health issues the last couple years.

Think this is a slot that probably gets determined next year.

My moneys on Brady being the starting QB on the 2020s team.

The Pats have been - yet again - to at least 5 SuperBowls within the 10 year span

How could they have "yet again" been in at least 5 SBs in a decade if they were only in 4 last decade?

Brees vs Rogers is a very interesting debate for QB2 of the decade. Seems like a lot of the bloom is off the rose for Rogers the past 2 years despite his stats appearing to be strong. I think the media/public is starting to realize his playing style and strong aversion to interceptions may actually be a detriment to the team winning, Brees is the opposite in that his brand is probably at an all time high at the moment. Was never seriously mentioned in the top 10 All time QB discussions until a few years ago but is now clearly in there for most. I think I'd vote Brees #2 but it's very close.

The last part of @everlong ‘s post is why I would vote Brees over Rodgers, personally. He truly does value his personal stats over team success, and it has shown big-time the last few years. And I think it’s a night-and-day difference in leadership between the two. I just think it will be a really hard sell that most voters will see it that way.

BTW Rodgers is still 0-37 when trailing by more than a point in the 4th quarter vs teams with winning records, he's won two games when trailing by a point. Also how many of his comebacks have been on hail mary's? He has to have 4 or 5 of those and the media play them up like there's some skill involved. On a few of those the defense flat out blew it and on a couple his receivers made amazing plays.

I was typically defending him on here as an all-time great, right up until last offseason when he demanded to be the highest paid in the league again despite having two years left on his deal. The guy is all about himself. His teammates don’t seem to like him, coaches don’t seem to like him, and it’s very obvious that he goes to great lengths to set personal records at the expense of the team.

That interception free steak is such a joke. All season fans criticized him for not taking risks when they were necessary to win. Brady set the precious mark during a 14-2 season where the team set efficiency records and he was the unanimous MVP.

In terms of the QB2, I think a few guys could win the award if they win the SB next year. Matt Ryan (has been really good this decade), Brees (kind of needs 1), Russell Wilson (would be 2 in 3 appearances). Otherwise I think Rodgers gets the nod.

His family and especially his brother doesn't like him. I had defended him on this count but as time goes on you have to think it's more on his side. Granted no way to know for certain.

Interesting to see if Manning is included. I bet either Ditka or Winslow get bumped but for the wrong TE with Gonzalez moving in. Somebody called Gronk the Goat and Sharpe went nuts saying it was Gonzalez. I think a lot of volume stat guys will push Manning in as well. Plus the media hates to give Brady anything they don't give Manning a +1 on....in subjective awards.

Difficult to take anyone from his era over Brady for the 100 year team if he is first team in both the 2000s and 2010s all decade teams. Unless I am misunderstanding what you are saying.

I was alluding to both of them making it and two of the others getting pushed out.

But Manning changed the game. He invented the audible.

Gotcha. I don't think anyone really should have a gripe with Brady first team and Manning second team.
