AB is well worth his $40M over 3 years as contracted.

AB's cap hits for any team that acquires him will be less than those for about 15-16 other WRs, nearly all of whom have not been nearly as productive.

However, even that relatively low number may be difficult for the Pats to absorb under the cap without significantly shorting the roster in other areas. So, perhaps "too expensive" in that respect.

Perhaps I have it backwards.

My understanding is that, if AB is traded before 3-17, his roster bonus goes with his contract to the acquiring team ... $12.625m salary + $2.5m roster bonus = $15.125m cap hit to the acquiring team for 2019.

OTOH, if he's traded after 3-17, the Steelers eat the roster bonus, and the cap hit to the acquiring team is "only" the $12.625m salary.

Yep. As a rule, when a player is traded, the new team is responsible for all payments due after that date; the old team is responsible for everything due before that date.

There is lot of ways to free up cap money. After all, the cap is about structure over time.

Are you saying that we wouldn't take a player of AB's quality for $13M AAV? I disagree with that. If there were a WR of AB's present and future quality available for $13M AAV, we'd likely would sign him in a minute.

This won't happen for us because PITT will likely get at least as much compensation from a NFC team as from us. This would be preferable for PITT.

I haven't a clue, but I would expect PITT to be offered a 1st and a 2nd. As an aside, PITT is in serious trouble. They will be the 3rd best team in their division for the next few years.

I'm no Miguel, but I've run all the numbers in my own spreadsheet - including the cost of draftees, etc. - so I'm not just throwing stuff at the wall in the dark. I've experimented with numerous ways to free up enough cap space, including extending Brady, Gronk and DMAC (to lower their cap hits, and cutting Clayborn and trading HT.

No. I'm saying that, in order to fit AB's cap hit under the 2019 cap, other sacrifices to the 2019 roster would definitely need to be made. Even cutting Gronk outright wouldn't cover the whole nut.

As to "future quality", AB turns 31 in July and will be 33 during the last year of his contract.

I agree that the Pats are highly unlikely to even want to come up with a pick-package that would satisfy the Steelers. However, I think you may be a bit optimistic about the Steelers' future place in their division. :)

I don't care how good AB is he's a ticking bomb. Did anyone see that Goat ring he made? WTF? How narcissistic do you have to be to make something like that? Here's a breakdown that was posted on SF-

Antonio Brown:

Rough childhood in Miami suburb of Liberty City
Left home because he couldn’t get along with stepfather
Homeless, slept on people’s couch, TY Hilton’s dad took him in.
Couldn’t get scholarship to FSU because unfocused in HS and lacked grades
Goes to Prep School, gets scholarship to FIU, kicked out before playing for fighting security guard
Follows Butch Jones to C. Michigan, has to be tutored by WR coach, had to be taught how to go to class and be an adult.
Fathers five kids by three different women over the years
Works his way from game day inactive to Pro Bowl return man, then pro bowl WR
Big money comes, addiction to the spotlight follows as does flashy jewelry clothes and cars.
Does reality shows Dancing With The Stars, Tanked, Tree House Masters, SNF, Madden Cover etc..
Facebook live streams from locker room
Former player Ryan Clark calls him out for being selfish, me first player that doesn’t care about winning
100+ mph speeding ticket on McKnight Road
Threatens to beat up reporter
Calls reporter racist
Lashes out and overreacts at Ed Bouchette for reporting on his injury
Sideline blow ups and tantrums
Publicly spars with mother of his child via social media
Makes a “trade me” comment via social media to former Steelers PR guy
Throws furniture off a balcony, is being sued for this
Also being sued for trashing $35k per month condo
Claims to be robbed of cash and jewelry twice in one summer
Calls police to report car missing, slams door In their face when they show up
Numerous sideline blow ups, including being in Fitchners face earlier this year week 2
Showed up late routinely then stopped showing up at all for his local radio and tv show
Showed up very late or not at all for multiple charity events he was advertised to be at including sick kids at children’s Hospital
Blows up at QB in practice, skips practices, absent for team exit meetings '''

End paste. If there was a couple red flags with A Hern there's about ten with this guy. I'm not putting him in the ballpark of a mass murderer, just saying I don't like to gamble. No,,, Fug no. I don't want this guy on our team.

At his price, it’s something like 21 million per.
I don’t want him at any price and wouldn’t trade more than a fifth round pick for him. Then he’s off to cleaveland

He's goin back to Pittsburgh...

Why is this question even being asked? Steelers would never trade him here. Remember what they did with Emanuel Sanders? They matched the Pats offer just to keep him away for at least one year.

after reading Ununcle's previous post...this is beyond the edge of the dark galaxy of ridiculous possibilites

People said the same thing about Moss. If BB wants him. I am good. The guy is the best receiver in the game.

If there is any truth to the fact that he threw a tantrum because Juju was voted “team mvp” instead of him, I’m not sure he is worth anything at all...
l Anyone know if the Pats have that kind of MVP award?

I saw something like this in the first page of the thread but I didn't wanna quote that far back. I'm glad it was brought up again so I can address the absurd nature of the comparison.
Moss got flack for saying he "took plays off" on a horrid team that was wasting his prime. I don't feel that was a good thing to do. I actually think it was a bad thing that hurts his legacy.
Brown, didn't "take plays off" on a team that had no shot at sniffing the play offs. He made a big stink about not getting enough targeting even though he was the most targeted, and then ended up not only siting out the final game (for not going to practices), a game that could've put them in the play offs, but, also wore a pimp costume from a Territino movie or Starski and Hutch. Freaking Huggie Bear walking up the sidelines before he deserts the stadium for good in the second half. Randy Moss NEVER DID THAT!!!!

How many here would realistically complain if AB joined the Patriots?
...
I may not be a fan of AB the person, but on the field he'd be a clear difference maker.
Totally realistic, I certainly would complain.

He’d make more difference in the locker room.

He’s a totally egomaniacal headcase who screwed all his teammates over for his selfish immaturity. Again.

I'd rather drink Draino than see him in a Pats uniform.

Thank you @mosi. Short, sweet & to the point. Nobody cares about what “we” want. BB & Kraft are all that matters.

I disagree. It doesn't really matter because there's a snowballs chance in hell it would ever happen, but your assumption that nobody would care and the one's that would would be ineffectual is the same line of thought that certain people propagated during the whole kneeling fiasco. You can stick your head in the sand all you want, but that cost the NFL a ton.
LALLALA !!! NO ONE WILL CARE LALALALA!!!!
I lost some good football Friends to that political crap.
If we ever signed this guy I'd be done too along with many others.
This guys a punk, primadona, glory hog, selfish, me first ball hog who cares about one thing and one thing only and it isn't the Lombardi.

What is "DM" Diva Mode? Direct Media? Doctor Madona? I see a picture after a game with Brady acknowledging AB. Um,,,, whats the deal? Wow,,,, News fit to print.

Direct messaging.

Looks like Tom sent him something that said,” keep balling AB. Fun to watch you.”

Of course now Brown is deciding to share this private message that’s months old, just out of the blue in order to drum up speculation and piss the Steelers off. Like I said, he’s just using Tom’s name to draw attention to himself.

Didn't require nearly the investment in draft picks or cap space that AB would.
