Talking Team Needs 2019

I’d like to see us make a play at Landon Collins... think he could excel in our system. He’s going to want around that 10m a season mark though. I know @BaconGrundleCandy is a huge huge fan of Thompson from Bama but if we cannot trade up to get him I’d like us to go for Landon.

I’d also like us to address TE and get Noah Fant - he’s my #1 TE

DT - Dexter Lawerence - an absolute mammoth of a man.

DE/OLB - in the dream world I’m taking Josh Allen but other than that I’m not 100% sure

LB - Otaro Alaka, Devin Bush, TJ Edwards, Tre Lemar, and Germaine Pratt. Out of these guys my preference is 1. Pratt. 2. Lemar. 3. Alaka

You like Fant over his teammate Hockenson, or you just don't know if Hockenson will declare?

I haven’t seen enough of Hockenson to decide yet.. I personally prefer Fant from the others that I’ve looked at so far

Just watched more tape on Fant. He’s quick, and will beat LBs and Safety’s with ease. Runs his routes very well. Very good hands. He will need to improve in the blocking game but compared to his 17 tape he has improved that dramatically.

Hockenson will fly up draft boards if he declares. He’s more of a polished blocker and will dominate that inline TE. He’s quicker than he looks and has solid hands, his routes are good but not as defined yet as Fant.

Honestly if Gronk retires I’d be tempted to double dip with these two, they could be AH/Gronk part two.

These two could become pro bowlers within a season or two.

If Gronk stays I am taking Fant.
If Gronk retires I think Hockenson is the bet as he’s more of a finished product, for what we’d like to see.

If we end up with either of them I think they will excel.

I’m guessing Gronk is in WWWE next year. No hard feelings here. He’s been a joy to watch. I’d like to get Hockenson and a WR. Stanley Morgan’s kid with one of 2’s. Then, go all defense

They're not related

Some news outlets are reporting Lawrence may have failed a drug test.

Watch tape of the Texas a&m versus Alabama game and check out the Texas a&m tight end playing against Nfl calibre defenders.

Brady seems more willing this year to toss up a ball and let his receiver make a play. I wonder if they’ll shift their receiver focus to larger targets, like Hakeem Butler or one of the Longhorn wrs. Of course, it could be purely out of frustration as wel.

But except for Brady (at a nice discount, I might add), Gronkowski (at another discount), Hightower, Gilmour and now Mason, who else on the roster is worthy of a nice raise?
If it would mean being able to keep Flowers, then I would very seriously tell the McCourtys to either take a Massive pay cut or get the hell out.

I think Hightower is inline for a pay cut before Devin. The Patriots reworked Jason's deal before week 1 of this year. I believe that he's an FA.

Brady needs TWO quality WRs next season: a high draft pick for the short- and near-term future, plus a quality veteran who's earned everything from his generous second contract and now wants a ring (my nominee: Golden Tate).

And it goes without saying, of course, that the TE position needs a COMPLETE overhaul.

Flowers is going to get 10M+. I don't know that Bill is going to go that high. He's getting a lot of attention as one of the top FA's available. The higher he goes towards 15M the less likely it becomes. Not sure if he has a Chandler Jones attitude of wanting to maximize his earning potential or if he would stay for close to but not top money.

For WR I think they're better off going the FA route at least in the slot. Cole Beasley made 3.4M this past year and is 30. If you can get him for 5/year or less he could be a good fit. Patterson and Hogan were both roughly 4M/year and Dorsett roughly 2m/year. I'd probably like to have Patterson back but I'm maybe at a little less coin. Hogan and Dorsett are pretty much gone. But Beasley would be a DA type of compliment to JE11. No idea what to expect from Berrios.

There isn't an outside receive who I look at and for the money see Bill taking a shot on. Not sure draft wise who I like yet.

Except Tate didn't like Matty P's practice schedule in Detroit.

Playing fast and being fast are not the same thing!

Agreed but both McCourty brothers have been both. The secondary isn't the issue with this team. The criticisms of the McCourty brothers and Chung in particular are unwarranted. People expect them to play like Rodney and Ty circa 2003 and nobody is doing that play in play out any longer because of the rules. If I have two criticisms of the secondary both of which exacerbate each other it's that they take bad angles at times and they don't get off of blocks when a player has the ball in space. The Miracle in Miami is emblematic of this but is hardly the only example.

You hardly ever see open receivers when a QB is delivering the ball in under 2.5 seconds. It's when the DL, which is the real problem, let's the QB hold the ball for forever or loses contain and the QB scrambles that bad things happen. To me if you're not getting pressure and you lose contain all in the same play it's unforgivable. They've done it again and again this year.

Yeah I also think that Tate was the one who called out Matty P, but he would be coming from Detroit to New England, similar to being transferred from Dorchester High School to Milton Academy: the Headmaster might be occasionally late to his own classes, but as soon as he arrives, you know you're about to receive the best education possible.

Warning, this chart will hurt your eyes, attempts to show current roster with player ratings and pending wholes in free agency.

Short answer - WR & DL are top needs but almost every other position group could use some top end talent

I can see it being a bit of a mass clear out of dead wood.

The guys id like us to resign at a reasonable price would be the following. The only two that I think will be expensive is Trent and Trey. Other than that I can’t see it being massive money to keep them here.

We will also have multiple restructures happening as well. D-Mac, HT, Brady, Allen. Are just a few off the top of my head.

Trent Brown
Trey Flowers $15m
Dorsett
Gostkowski
JJones
Patterson
John Simon

I also agree with the above chart that quality depth at both OL & LB is almost non-existent. Injury excuses help explain some of that lack of depth; but even if everybody returns next season, including the injured ones, we still need at least 2 more high-quality players at both position groups.
