Khalil Mack traded to Chicago

Not picking on Miller. Had a 2nd on him. More developmental athlete than NFL ready player. Gruden is borderline inept when it comes to the draft.

J/c is this the crow thread too ? :p

Depending how the draft was going I had him as a late first if a team needed a tackle or like yourself as a 2nd rounder.

Oh wow... Fascinating. Mack is superhuman, huh...? Just watch the drop off this year . See , all that money in his pocket, playing for perennial loser franchise, might cause a tad less desirable results... We shall see .

Season not over but...

Tackles are down to about 60% of last year..

Sacks are up a tick. 12.5 to 10.5...

But he has an interception and a TD... Woohoo..!
The tackling stats could be that he is now more of a pure pass rusher.. but team is doing well .. as in bottom line.. playoffs!

So congrats to bears. Looks like good move but I'm not a capologist to sort out contract breakdowns. The rookie contract for QB seems a key component for this team.

Wait is anyone on this board trying to say that the Mack trade hasn’t worked out for Chicago?

Of course they’ll improve pretty significantly with the early return on the trade. It’s almost impossible for it to be bad at this juncture in time, as they have are utilizing the gained asset and deferring the huge package they gave up. How a massive contract with injury risk and the loss of two first round picks effect them is yet to be seen. I don’t think it’s fair to do a victory lap quite yet. I think they gave up too much for Mack, and it this may ultimately prevent them from being a year-to-year Super Bowl contender. A defense isn’t made by one player, and I think they’d still be very good without him.

I submit that the Bears won huge on this trade. They gave money and picks for an impact player, perhaps the best DE in the league. How many first round picks are busts? How many second round picks are busts?

I'd gladly give Malcom Brown, another first round pick, and Jordan Richards for Mack.

Who would want Malcolm Brown or Jordan richards?

I would have preferred to move up to get Van der Esch

I think our 23rd and 2nd rounder would have gotten it done. Baltimore was willing to trade down. Bill likes collecting picks though.

To me Mack is a guy you dream of when you’re making a first round pick. He’s a homerun at the second most important position in the game. That defense went from above average to possibly the best in the league. I say there’s not a chance they win that division if they didn’t make the trade. They gave up a first moved down half a round (they gave up a first and got a second) and then moved back two rounds (gave up a third for a 5th) to acquire a guy who put them over the hump into the postseason. Also with the cap jumping up every year in 2 or 3 years as long as Mack stays healthy that contract will be par for the course with other premier pass rushers. I would make that trade anyway.

This trade will be remembered for a long, long time. It's nice to see Chicago be good again, especially on defense.

they were not a year to year contender before the trade either.

The league has only had 2 or 3 teams that are consistently great, everyone else has had to struggle. Mack is a generational talent at DE, easily worth 2 firsts.

Then I submit this to you guys: why wouldn't you just wait for top positional player to hit the free agent market and then set the market with him? If theoretically a player like Mack is a free agent, he's going to get close to the same money and be the highest paid DE/OLB in the NFL. It seems like this is just double dipping what you're giving up. You're paying free agent money to Mack, and on top of that, you're giving up two first round picks for the exclusive right to play free agent money to Mack.

To me, it seems like keeping those picks and using the $20+ on free agents is a wiser decision. I understand he's a great player, but I completely disagree he's a once-in-a-generation guy. He's really, really good, but there are about 10 incredible defenders who is isn't a full class ahead of (JJ Watt, Von Miller, Aaron Donald, Fletcher Cox, Joey Bosa, Luke Kuechly, Calais Campbell, Bobby Wagner.) Mack was voted the 16th best in the NFL by his peers last year; that's not a generational talent. Prime Watt and prime Revis are the only players in the last 10 years who fit that description.

I'd personally rather have Gilmore, an extra $7M, and an extra two first round picks, than Mack. Is there anyone out there who disagrees with that?

I agree that waiting for a player like Mack to become a FA would be ideal, but teams don't let these players go. Players like Gilmore generally do not go to FA. Patriots got lucky.

How often do premier pass rushers in their prime hit the open market? Almost never. Simeon Rice? Reggie White? These guys are like QB’s. You don’t see a prime franchise QB floating out there too often. Kirk Cousins is as close as we have seen since Drew Brees (who at that time was injured and viewed as more of a Kirk Cousins type).
I also disagree he’s in a second tier of defensive players. The only one I think on par or better is Aaron Donald and I would give up the exact same package the Bears did for him. He was an All-Pro at DE and LB 2 years ago, he is just 27 years old. If Brady was as bad as Trubisky is Gilmore would not be a guy to put this team over the top into the postseason. He’s a very good corner but not an impact player the way Mack is.

Okay that'a a good point. I think that's worth a perhaps a first round pick, not two, considering the rarity of finding him. I did not say he's a in a second tier of defensive players; in fact, I didn't even argue he isn't the best defender in the NFL. My point was that he is not in a separate class by himself as the far and away best defender in the NFL, and there are a handful of comparable players. He's first tier.

1.) The wait. Waiting an extra year, maybe two if they franchise him means you miss a window where you have a QB on a rookie deal, which allows you to front load a contract this results in a lower cap hit when your QB needs a new deal.

2.)Competition to sign the player. If Mack hits free agency teams like the browns, jets, 49ers, are now all in the mix, FLUSH with cash, they could easily out bid you.

3.)Compensation picks. Signing Mack as a free agent is going to **** up your comp picks.

The draft is a gamble, you might get a stud, you might get a dud. it's that age old do you want this really cool thing you like OR do you want to try your luck and get something from this wrapped up present.

Ahh sorry I misread that part. The way I view the trade is they gave up one first and moved back (most likely) 15ish spots into the second for Mack. They will end up with a pick in the low 20’s and the Raiders will be close to the first pick in the second round. The Bears have a cornerstone on defense and a solid young nucleus, they just have to hope Trubisky will progress enough not to be a detriment.

QB is the only position that matters by a mile. If you don't have one playing at a high level you're almost 100% done for.

Pairing a stud defensive player w a (good) QB rookie contract is how some good teams are competing & winning. Short term at least.

Chicago went all in on MT & needed that other piece on the other side. It made perfect sense.

Now Oakland isn't done dismantling & has Chucky calling the shots. Not good when he can't draft & is overrated as a coach
