Alex Smith suffered a compound fracture - meaning the bone broke through his skin, per source. Trauma surgeons discovered Smith suffered a spiral fracture in his leg - defined as a long bone broken by a rotational force. Smith, 34, faces a lengthy rehab process to try to return.

I wish him all the best on any attempt to return to the game, but I also hope he takes the time to seriously evaluate the idea of not returning to the field.

I was watching the replays on that and it looked real bad. Gruesome the way the foot and leg were all under him. Yikes

When I hear “Whoa! Horrific injury!” I do my best to stay away. I haven’t seen Gordon Hayward’s, for instance.

If Smith retires do the Redskins get cap relief?

Thirty three years to the day after Theismann’s similar injury. That one was career ending. This one may be.

But here’s the question: how many of us would gladly sign up to play QB in the NFL even knowing this would be the certain outcome? I know I would. I bet most of you would.

I was just getting ready to mention Joe Theisman. :(

Chao said he doesn’t believe it’s career-ending.

Living in DC it’s been impossible to escape the comparisons.

Also hearing a lot of love for Colt McCoy already. Not so much for the backup they signed today (Mark “ButtFumble” Sanchez).

No way. I’d pass. Those guys would kill me.

Football looks like it hurts I'll stick with watching.

Hill may be the only guy I’m ok with catching a punt inside the 5 (sorry wrong thread)

And no thanks on taking that amount of money for that type of injury.

Good grief. Why do people lose Hill so badly??

Just read this somewhere on the injury comparison with Joe Theismann....

Both Redskins QBs
Both of them injured on the same yard line (40 yard line)
Both of the games they got injured in ended with the score of 23-21
Both injured on the same date of November, 18th. 33 Years apart.
Both of them injured by the only 2 x3 defensive player of the year award winners (Lawrence Taylor and JJ Watt)

Just really unbelievable.

I believe the Skins could ask for his signing bonus back..... Whether they would or could with that horrific injury is another question....
