Excellent stuff.

Though there's also the Mahoomes mobility factor to account for as well. Seems contain/collapse the pocket would be a requirement and not sure how successful that will be?

Though you might be able to counter the pattern-zone with bunch formations that are strictly on 1 side of the field, but BB would have that covered as well

I'd think that zone/pattern-matching would be less vulnerable to pick plays/rub routes out of bunch formations than man coverage.

Would agree, but if you have a DB protecting an area where there isn't an opposing player, at the snap, then the advantage would go back to the offense (and mismatches could ensue). Which is why I said strictly one side of the field.

Good news on Hogan. I watched a video this morning about Brady's revenge tour in 2016. Cool video, a little over produced, but I'll never get sick of watching what that team did.

Anyway, in that video, it was amazing how many big plays Hogan was a part of. He really was a fast guy, at least in the situations he was allowed to play in that year. Edelman, Amendola, and Gronk (for part of the year), really helped push Hogan into a role where he could thrive.

I don't know if it will be exactly the same here, as theoretically Gordon would be your deeper threat if he continues to develop, but I think Chris has got some big plays in him yet if he can get healthy and everyone gels.

Perhaps we can agree that the Patriots are tough to beat at Gillette.

Regardless of who you think wins this game, it’s a matchup is great for the NFL.

That's not exactly how a zone/pattern-matching scheme necessarily works, though. It can be configured to present a man-coverage look, pre-snap, even to the point of having a defender tracking an eligible receiver in pre-snap motion.

The advantage against bunch formations is that the three defenders lined up across from a trips set don't follow specific receivers into a scrum where they can be picked, each defender follows the guy who heads for a zone. The receivers can cross paths however they want, but the defenders won't (ideally).

We open in dime on anything besides 3rd and long and they're running that ball right down our throats for an easy 7. You can't do that against them. Hunt will have a field day. The key will be stopping the run out of the nickel.

After I wrote what I did, I began to think about how big a mistake that would be because their run is essentially what sets up their RPO and subsequently their offense, so you are right. I'll have to take that one back.

Trying to disrupt Mahomes' first read and keep him in the pocket seems like a promising strategy. Here is one way we might try to do that.

Patriots Gameplan: Could a Belichick-Saban Creation Be the Key to Slowing Down the Chiefs Offense? | CLNS Media

I just love Lazar's stuff. He's the next generation of sophisticated and knowledgeable reporters. A far cry from the days of sniveling garbage put out by Shanknancy, et al., that made your brain dumber for having succumbed to reading it.

It was early in the day so no worries. Yeah if they still had a scrub like Charcandrick West back there, I'd be all in on that idea. But Hunt is a whole 'nother beast entirely (his disappointing season, for his standards, aside).
