The Other AFC Contenders and Race for the 1 seed

Well they have one of the worst QBs in the nfl who seems to only well play well against our Swiss cheese D. They will drop games with his poor play

Hm, kinda raises a fun question. Who do you root for week 4? Jets @ Jags.

Just because this thread (as every thread post SB) needs to become about Butler.

Any comments on this @moejr or @Kargetina after you two were handing out disagrees to everyone who wrote about Butler struggling yesterday during the Titans / Texans game ?

You presented me with your agenda. You don’t mentioned the int he hasn’t in the end zone. You don’t know mentioned how the titans got a big stop in the end. Also the fact the the titans offense went 3 and out 5 times.

I didn't present you with anything but a tweet giving us Butlers overall stats this year. There was zero agenda or interpretation from my point of view in any of my posts. It is what it is.

Antonio Brown tweeted to Steelers front office to trade him because of comments that Brown would not have the same numbers without Ben.

Both stats and contract.

Drama

My week 2 "hot take" playoff seeding prediction:
1 - AFCE Patriots (I see a 3-1 start and significant improvement when Edelman returns and after we pick up Josh Gordon ;) )
2 -AFCW-Chiefs (I'm bullish on them after impressive win vs. Steelers);
3-AFCN- Ravens (God, how I hate that team);
4-AFCS- Jags (weak division but average QB and tough schedule)
5-WC-Steelers (too much talent and experience to miss playoffs but will lose WC round)
6-WC-Dolphins (just a weird hunch-no meaningful analysis)

I don't even understand what that argument even was, but I've removed all of it. It had no place in this thread in the first place.

I just assumed that posting the stats of the CB1 of another AFC team is within topic here. The Titans were in the playoffs last year so are a potential competitor.

Oh yeah, don't take it the wrong way - the stats are relevant, and I've left your post with the stats up. The resulting argument was not relevant and was not even really an argument as much as one person saying "look at these raw numbers someone posted on Twitter" and someone else saying "you're biased! you're a tool!"

Isn't a seeding thread in mid September like talking about magic numbers 20 games into the baseball season?

Yes.

The only insight at this point in the season is the Chiefs offense is for real with Mahomes and it's not a fluke; I believe they'll challenge the 2013 Broncos for most points scored and that Mahomes is a legitimate MVP candidate. You could say I'm overreacting to two games with an unproven quarterback, but I'm that impressed with his skills, which I think are way more impressive and reliable long-term than Carson Wentz last year in is sophomore season.

That, and the Steelers really do have the potential to fall off a cliff and totally implode. I'm not sure it will happen, but it's clear the outlook on this team is drastically different than it was three weeks ago.

Everything else seems pretty unclear.

Hm, kinda raises a fun question. Who do you root for week 4? Jets @ Jags.

Jags.

They just don’t scare me at all. I am a lot more nervous about playing a variety of other teams who I think will destroy this defense every time. I think the Jags are overrated and the question whether they’ll make the playoffs, not whether they get HFA.

Yes, I realize they just wiped the ground with us.

Hm, I suppose I can see an argument for rooting for the Jags from a Pats fan perspective.

1. It's the Jets, of course you root against 'em.
2. Perhaps the insane Jags D puts Darnold in shellshocked state that last for weeks and inhibits his growth/learning this season. (Though the guy doesn't seem to let much bother him.)
3. The Pats just landed a very unique player that could be a game changer the next time Jags vs Pats rolls around in the playoffs.
4. If the Jets were to beat the Jags with a 21 year old QB playing his 4th game, 2 weeks after the Pats got whooped by them... the Jets would have to be taken seriously.

Still, I think I'd be rooting for any Jags loss to try and secure the Pats home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

31-20 on the road against a damn decent team is "got whooped"?

Wow, you just fans really are completely beaten down by life.

Jees, sensitive much?

Better?

Wow. Talk about being sensitive.

I wouldn't call it a squeaker, nor would I call it a whoopin', so no that's not better. And in the NFL, I don't play the silly game of Team A beat Team B and Team B beat Team C, therefore Team A is better than Team C.

Given that the Jaguars have a 1 1/2 game lead over NE in seeding - and given that I am not even remotely worried about competing with the Jets for the division - I will be rooting for the Jets to win the game. They're not going to, but I will be hoping they do.

Oh by the way: 1968.

Nowhere did imply the Jets would be better than the Pats. Ha, did ya see them vs Miami? They were a mess! Just that they'd have to be taken seriously.

But yeah, that's how I figured a Pats fan would view the Jets @ Jags game. Especially considering the Jags will likely be pretty consistent with that defense. A head-to-head loss vs them could be tough to overcome for home field advantage.

I wouldn't be concerned with the Jets competing for the division at all. If they're lucky, they'll be in the wildcard mix in December.

To be completely honest, I think the Jets pose a bigger long-term risk to the Patriots than the Jags. The Jags have a terrible quarterback and are just cycling through a period of upswing because of a some huge free agency contracts and top-5 picks. They’ll mess it up again very soon when they don’t have clear superstars to draft and need to pay the emerging star players. The Jets have a lot of unknowns. Darnold may end being really good and they have a lot of cap flexibility. I suspect they’ll also screw it up as they usually do, but at least they have a potential franchise QB (which Bortles is not in any way.). But I’m rooting for the Jags just because it’s the Jets and I root for them to lose, unless there’s a really obvious advantage for Patriots in the Jets winning. I am not sold on that advantage yet.

Regardless of any opinions about how good the Jags or Jets are (or not) or will be over the course of the remaining season, the math regarding HFA is this:

-- The Pats now absolutely need to win two more games than the Jags do over the course of the next 14 games. If the Jags win 12 of 14, the Pats will need to win out. If the Pats and Jags end up with the same W-L record, the Jags will have HFA over the Pats. Period.
-- The Pats won't have another opportunity to face the Jags until the playoffs to even the head-to-head record, so any loss by the Jags is good for the Pats.

-- The Pats are currently tied with the Jets on overall record, and one game ahead of the Jets in conference record and divisional record, but they have TWO opportunities to beat the Jets in head-to-head competition.
-- If the Pats and Jets both win on Sunday, The Pats and Jets will remain tied on overall record.
-- They will BECOME tied in conference record (1-1), since the Pats are playing non-conference DET and the Jets are playing in-conference CLE, but the Pats will still be a game ahead of the Jets in divisional record. A Jets win at this stage doesn't hurt the Pats a bit, as long as the Pats at least match them, win-for-win.

In week-4, if the Pats beat the Fins in Foxboro and the Jets beat the Jags ...
-- The Pats will still be tied with the Jets in overall and conference records, but the Pats will be TWO games ahead of the Jets in divisional record.
-- WRT the Fins, the Pats would - at worst - be tied with them on overall record and divisional record and one game behind the Fins on conference record.

ERGO, root for the Jets in week-4 against the Jags.

You’re going to go crazy doing this every week as teams go up and down. Last year people were hoping Jacksonville would take out Pittsburgh early on since they didn’t see them as contenders and thought they were a 4-5 win team. Meanwhile I saw a bunch of stuff similar to what you just posted, but it was about how we should be rooting hard against any Raiders opponents (they were apparently a lock for at least 12 wins.). Then people were arguing that we should root for Pittsburgh over KC, since KC had beaten us, though it turned out Pittsburgh would be the bigger threat in the end. It rarely stays static with the horses remaining in the same order, and I personally think Jacksonville is going to fall in their faces at some point.

Jacksonville could go 8-8 and the Patriot and Jets could each finish at 10-6, so in that case you’d want Jacksonville to win. I don’t that will happen (especially with the Patriots/Jets), but I’m just saying it’s way, way too early to tell who you should root for strategically, so you might as well enjoy the games and root for the team you hate the most to lose.
